I've been way more than impressed over the years with the 7-08. Can the Roberts provide me with the same quality of killin as the -08? I know, shot placement is a must. Right now I feel like the -08 is about the perfect deer getter. But the Bob just is one I've always wanted.

If money is not an issue, get them both. I have several 257 Roberts rifles, and a few 7x57's, which are so close to the 7-08 there's really no arguing between the two.
I am thinking lighter rifles and less recoil these days. I shoot a 7.5 pound 270 winchester with a midddling load of H4831 and a 130 bullet at about 2900FPS, I can tell the difference between this and a 180 at about 2900 out of a 300 WSM. My goal is a very very light .257 roberts with a very light riflescope on it, sadly will not happen this season...
I shot a 7mm/08 out of a Remington Mountain Rifle for about ten years. In the last three years, I have been dabbling with a .257 Roberts.
What I have found is that there is very little difference. They are both very efficient deer cartridges, and kill very well. I have only used the 90 grain Sierra BTHP, the 100 grain Hornady and the 110 grain Accubond out of the Roberts, I would use the Sierra again if I had to, but would prefer the others if possible.
In the 7mm/08, I have used the 120 grain Sierra PH, the 140 grain Nosler BT a great deal, the 139 grain Hornday interlock, the 130 grain Speer in hot cor and BTSP configuration, and I used the 154 grain Hornady RN once. Any reasonable bullet out of the 7mm/08 is a cyanide pill for a whitetail.
Either cartridge can be had in a very light rifle. I just recently bought a Kimber Montana in .257 Roberts, and look forward to shooting it soon.
250 Savage, you don't need that much horsepower for Deer, not even Mulies.
As noted, either will do, but I prefer the larger, heavier bullets of the 7mm-08.
.257 of course! It's TWENTY-FIVE caliber! It won't kill 'em any better, but it's TWENTY-FIVE caliber!
My wife has hunted deer and pronghorns with a .257 Roberts for over 25 years, with kills every year. Everything she has shot with it has stayed shot. Hornady 100 grain bullet, 44 grains 4350.
Flip a coin for use on Whitetail... I have one of each and love them.
The + to the 257BOB is the lighter 75&85gr varmint bullets are nice for V-hunting.
The + to the 7mm-08 is that you can load a little heavier bullets like the 150 and 160's which make it just slightly a little better suited for Elk.
Although the 7mm-08 with 100gr'ers can be used for varmints and the 257Bob can be used on Elk with no probs with the right bullet.
I'm going to give the Remington Model 7 in 7mm-08 with 140 gr partitions a try next month in Maine..
Hmmm... which one would you rather have for shooting 300 lb mule deer?

Thats my favorite rig for whitetails in the timber, except I use 145 gr. Grand Slams. Works great.
Put me in the Bob camp. It is all I have needed for the past 25 years. Oh I stray sometimes, but I always come back to the Bob.
Hi lodgepole - Thanks for the idea on 145 gr Grand Slams.. This will be my first time hunting with this rifle, I bought it for my dad to use but when he passed last year I set it up for my nephew to use this year. Now because of school commitments he can't go so I'm going to try and bloody it for him..
A .284" 140gr anybody bullet through the lungs is hard to beat. 7mm is hard to beat for all a round , and the 708 is one of the best. I have 3 708s, but prefer the 7SAUM and the 6.5x55.
The Bob is good, but the Roy is better.

We got one 7-08 right now. I'm getting a 7-08 in a featherweight. Local shop has a Bob in a hawkeye with a sweet piece of wood. No one seems to want it. Been there at least 6 months. It's just one of them guns thats like a snake. Everytime I'm near it I get bit.
