Is there any way to keep my Kerosun type kerosene heater from smelling?
I am using 1-K kerosene. Brand new wick and kerosene can.
The unit is in the garage and my wife claims that she can smell fumes upstairs (I can't).Typical fifties ranch style house so the garage is under the living space. I am keeping the vent window in the garage open.

Any sugestions?

Thanks,
Doug

tough to not get the smell if you're using K1. I've been fortunate enough to have access to JetA for years, and I use that in the kerosene heaters in my shop. (I've also been known to run it in the TDI and PowerStroke with a lubricity additive)
JetA runs pretty much soot and smell free in a K heater, but public access to it is very limited.
I think it's just something you're going to have to live with unless you can get sump fuel from the airport.

What levrluvr said above... Or, just shut it off.. I've not found one yet that doesn't smell, but I've no access to JetA either.. laugh

My dad has one in his office. His has a big handle and he takes it outside and lights it then brings it in. Startup it kinda smokes just a tad then you can't really smell it.

It's important to make sure wick is fully soaked before lighting.

Sometimes you just gotta put up with it. Ours always smelled after lighting.

Kerosene heaters are going to smell like kerosene , that's what they do.

Yes! After the heater is off, turn the wick all the way down to low so as much of the wick as possible gets soaked in kerosene.

The kerosene heater that produces the least fumes is also the cheapest of my kerosene heaters. I have three of them. Rarely use them anymore.

Unvented propane heaters aren't quite as noxious as kerosene heaters in most cases....they just kill you slower than kerosene.......
