Great pics. Reminds me of a lot of pictures from my relatives in NW Washington back in the 40-60s. Lots of large stumps and one log truck loads. Of course they were better looking.(Don't think they carried any pink guns either)



I am wondering about that date though. Tree was so big it fell into tomorrow???

Good looking timber for being that far north. Appears to be solid, they get to be that size you get a touch of rot. You working by the hour or are you busheling? looks like a lot of second growth "grouse ladders" around you as well.

Nice one! Is Sikorsky building a new helo to haul that one out? The other tree's in the pictures look downright skinny compared to that one.

BTW gents, I've been to one of 'Sticks' worksites down south, and the terrain goes darn near straight up from the first step off the beach. No place for 'girlie men'!

Am thinking the butt weighs 40,000lbs. It is a 13 footer that is 77 inches on the scale end(small end) and was fairly wet(heavy).

The boys are gonna have to rip the first 4 cuts,to make them fly.

The impressive part is that you girdled that sucker with a one-man saw and only missed your starting cut by a couple inches.

There was a time,when I couldn't believe they paid guys to do my job. Now that novelty has since worn off and money do interest me.(grin)

I figure if your gonna do it,you may as well do it as best you know how. I've always taken great pride in my work and go the extra mile to yield a superior end product and like pretty logs.

I've been fortunate to have worked with some of the best that ever drove a saw for a living and made it a point to listen/learn from them. Those Old Timers always did me right and my gratitude is profound.

I get by with a saw...................(grin)

IMPRESSIVE !
There are no trees that big down here in Texas . That's quite a feat and you did it with iron sites on that Husky . When you gonna mount a Leupold on it ?
I'm not familiar with the trees in your part of the country but will guess that tree to be a Douglas fir .
You have to be good and know what your doing to fell a tree that size . Makes one appreciate the old loggers of the past that cut trees like that with a hand saw .

Stick... are those the actual tree rings visible in that photo?, meaning that is what appears to be a ring actually several little ones or one big one as it appears. 'Cause if those are the actual rings, that tree was putting on about 2" in girth in a single year in some years.

Had a buddy some years back who took it upon himself to fell a huge dead elm in front of his house. Figgered he had it figgered out so he could drop the whole thing in one cut. He got most of the way through when that tree settled ever so gently in the wrong direction, trapping the saw. Good thing there weren't no wind, it teetered there for a while until a tree company could get there and pull it over.

The tree is a Sitka Spruce. It's growth rings are not visible in the image and it would take a macro picture to illustrate them,as they are very minute. If I have time today,I'll try to get back to it and get a photo to clarify how tightly grained it is.

If a guy hasn't ever had a saw hung up,it's because he hasn't ran one very much. I could write a fair sized book on the art of being hung up.(grin)

My "favorite" is when working on Old Growth Doug Fir snags and having the bark decide to rapidly [bleep] loose and come collapsing down at Mach 9. That's when things get "sporty". Nothing like multi tons of 6"+ thick bark,trying to kill you,to get the blood pressure up to speed.

Hemlock snags can be plum exciting too. It is often amazing at how they can possibly remain standing,with no more meat than they have holding them up.

There's plenty to keep a guy on his toes and like a friend's song says,"The graveyard is full of Cutters,who were faster and better than me".

I sorta like that quip,as the only thing that is truly important to me,is walking out under my own power at the end of the day.........................

I always thought there were a few things every man should know how to do - shoot a gun (iron sights too), oil change on a car and run a saw a bit. Obviously when I say I can run a saw it is NOT in the same way you can! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />



Basicaly I can cut a fairly good sized tree - usually in a direction I want and manage to get the bar stuch a few times. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Not lose a leg or finger too.

Absolutely incredible, I really like it when you post those pic's.
Everytime I see the old stumps when out hunting I think of guys like you and the old timers from the days of yore, that managed the trees you see in old photos and I marvel that they were able to do what they did with hand saws.
