does a man need to be before he can pull off wearing one of these?
Ask derby dude,
Wouldn't catch me dead in one.
Never, not in this lifetime.
70 plus
But they have to walk slow and look the part.
Used to wear one when a teenager, though it was okay.
Women in Alaska wear them for muff muffs.

It is not the age, but rather the look of the man.

I'm no John Wayne, but I see what you are saying....
Would it make him look older or more distinguished Miss Lynn?
Depends on where you live, too.
Might fly in Pennsylvania, maybe not in rural Arizona.

Fast approaching mid 60's here. My wife say's she likes the look of that type hat when I let the beard grow, and so does my son. ... As always, YMMV
My grandfather wore hats like that to church every Sunday for as far back as I can remember. Looked OK on him

As did mine. Plenty of men of Irish descent here in the hard-coal region wore those tweed hats with their Sunday best. Not so much anymore....

Not sure, I have never seen him. But I do believe it does lend a certain air of classic style to the gentleman that dons one.

Very, very, nice

old europeans in the old mining towns around Arizona too.

Nor me.
I heard my Dad call that a co#k$ukker hat once when I was young. When I asked him what he was talking about he replied, "I don't know what ya' really call 'em, but Earl (our curmudgeonly neighbor) always wears a hat like that and he's a real co#k$ukker". Kinda stuck in my head ever since.
I've worn one since I was 27.

But I suppose that might could be said regardless a persons choice of hats...
I grew up around people wearing them. My grandfather in Scotland never went anywhere without his (or a pocketful of sweeties).
Here in Boston, what with the large Irish population, they're still popular. Lots of guys I grew up with wore them. My brother wore one for years.
I think they're cool, and not age-specific, but you either look good in one, or you don't. I don't, so I don't wear one.
Edit: BTW, in these parts, they're known as a 'scully' or 'scally' cap or hat.
Worn correctly, tweed hats can look proper..
Worn incorrectly,...not so cool... Now you wanna talk about a gay-assed hat,..I give you the Beret...
Used to wear one when a teenager, though it was okay.
I'm almost willing to bet that it was in a Plad Print and it was in the middle to late fifties. I had one when I was still in High School.
It's not an age thing. It's an image thing.
I've always thought those caps looked great...
accompanied by a tweed jacket, Wellington boots, breeches, a brier pipe and a monocle.
Tony Romo wears one. But then...
I'm gonna throw some bait.... bet I catch a turd'er, rat'er and the elusive large mouth ironbender... all in one cast....
Ziiiiiiing...
Tony Romo wears one. But then...
Nuff said.
When you can afford a Bentley or Rolls.

Being Irish myself, that hat provides a basis for being a gentleman. You can turn and ask, "Excuse me, miss, will you hold my hat?" right before the fight breaks out.
What a handsome young man!
The guy on the PBS show "the Woodwright Shop" (or similar) wears one too.
I know an 18 year old who sports one all the time. He also does pretty well with the ladies, despite his taste in headgear
!
At least they're not wearing it sideways.
Not my taste in hats, but is someone else likes 'em that's their choice.

When I was a youngster in Trevorton, Pa. , there was a man named Donovan about 6'6" that looked like something out of the 1930's and he wore a "Snap Cap" as he called it. I don't think many would have told him different.
Now you wanna talk about a gay-assed hat,..I give you the Beret...
pick out a guy with a burgundy beret pulled low over his right ear and call him a queer for wearing it....
My son and I out at the apple orchard this year.
I am in my 40's.
My wife likes that hat, so what some random dudes on the internet thinks really doesn't matter a whole lot to me.
I used to wear one all the time (in a previous life) when I was Ben Hogan.

Sorry,..
[color:#3333FF]even the military agrees on this one!
I find it amazing that with the narrow exception of ballcaps and cowboy hats, hats have been shuned for maybe 45 years. I guess it's changing which is great - I mean how can you dress nicely in hot sunny weather if you can't wear a decent hat?
better read your own link again... The 82nd will retain the burgundy beret...
I don't understand why hats fell out of fashion. Some of those dress hats like the fedora or a bowler didn't look too bad...
Is that Stymie as an older man? A good hat can last many years.
Exactly D.W..
Rockchuck,
See how good Stymie looked; imagine what the right hat can do for you!

The perfect driving cap. Any age will do.

Are women when they stop puttin out....
I think I do okay with it, this was at Mom's funeral.
The guy on the left:
Hey, I make those two look good, especially the Smurf, I am so proud of her!
Well,OK,two out of three isn't bad.
I heard my Dad call that a co#k$ukker hat once when I was young.
I've never heard them called anything else.
Ain't that the truth!
My biggest pride about her is her trips to southeast asia on Service-member recovery missions, Viet-nam and Laos.

Les I never knew that..that is something to be very proud of!
My family is, she is one hell of a girl! Woody, you would like my little sis! She is an IDMT, used to give assistance in the Flight Line physical's for Pilot's, says she has never seen more people whine about shots.
Outside of a baseball cap and my black Stetson the only other hat I would consider wearing, would be a Fedora like Indiana Jones wore.
My hats generally have about a 4" brim (as recommended by MD's in this region of skin cancer), but I use a ball cap when the wind blows too hard. I really don't want to end my life ear-marked!

I don't know how it happened but that quote attributed to me in your post is definitely not something I originally posted.
No biggie, though.
Doesn't anybody here even remember the National Cowboy Hat Craze of the late 70's ???
"EVERYBODY" wore a Big Cowboy Hat ... 'cept me.
(It didn't go with my Nehru jacket.)
And most were all hat and no cattle!
