Best way?

I need a clean edge at a doorway where the Pergo will stop.

A utility knife pulls and tears in the sticky foam.

Try some heavy duty scissors/shears.

very sharp blade.......damn near go through blades faster when cutting in pad than the carpet itself....

Yeah, carpet is a breeze.

we just change blades often, if we even think they are getting dull change them out.....we dont use utility knives though, we use ones like these(4 edges to use per blade):

Thanks, S. The blade is pretty sharp, but I'll change it.

if its tearing its not sharp enough.....if its sharp enough it cuts clean......but like i said above, pad is harder on the blade than carpet so whats sharp enough for carpet isnt necessarily sharp enough to cut pad cleanly.....

i never use a carpet blade on pad Use a standard utility knife blade we sharpen them as needed on a stone i carry in my tool box. Its all about the angle of attack when putting pad. change you blade angle... closer to the surface of the pad and it will cut nice and clean.

We used a electric knife with a little silicone on it for rubber padding on furniture. Don't know about carpet padding.

I know it's not what pros do but I used one of those wheels that roll that's as sharp as a razor blade up against a straight edge. Didn't rip at all. Didn't have much to do however.

I think it's made for quilting or material cutting or something.

Pizza cutter? smile

OK. Thanks guys. I got it done nice and clean. I just used a single edge blade that goes into a window scraper.

One of these things, it's like a round razor blade that rolls.

sharp blade and hold it almost horizontal to the pad while pressing down firmly as you draw the blade across the pad. you can see by the way this carpet pad knife is designed what i'm talking about, a regular carpet knife will work just fine, main thing is keeping the blade angle almost flat to the pad.

if the pad is old and deteriorated you might try scissors.
