Hey guys, among all the other things going on right now, i was recently spoken to by a friend of mine who is a disabled veteran. He was in Viet Nam in the Air Force doing crash rescue. He served for four years.

I was told that he wants to learn how to hunt. Growing up, he was never allowed to own a gun. His father was in WWII and had no interest in guns after using them the way a soldier does. Now, he is on his disability and looking to get into hunting. He needs literally everything. I will be working with him to start buying a pack, and basic gear. His budget is such that he cant afford much, but we are working on it.

Now, taking my cue from Seafire here, who also lives in the town i do, i am hoping we can pool together our resources to get this man a rifle.

Where we live, a .308 Win. will kill anything that moves. That is what he wants, but i dont have one. I do have a Mauser 95 project gun in 7x57 though. I will donate the barreled action. It will need to be drilled and tapped, and have a new bolt handle put on, be blasted and coated.I will do the coating, and i know a smith right here in town who can do the other work.

As it sits, the barreled action needs a trigger, and a stock as well. I looked at Boyds, and they have a stock that will fit and they also sell the Bold trigger for it. We will also need rings and i have a scope around here, an old Weaver gifted to me by our own John Barsness and Gunner500. I have 50 rounds of brass, but no other components to load for it. That would be helpful. I will also be needing to get some Duracoat for it.

I will do the finish work on the stock, and the coating.

If you have any interest in helping out with this project, please shoot me a PM. I will get some pics of the action up soon and will get any other details up as needed.

Thanks guys!
Update time.

Just overnight the Campfire has responded pretty well. As it sits, It appears that we can cross the trigger off the list, and a box of TSXs should be here soon to facilitate some load work up for him. One other member here is down for a donation to purchase parts/supplies.

I can do Paypal as well if you are more comfortable that way. I cant remember what i need to give to people in order to make it work though... blush

As always, i am humbled by the people that make up the 'Fire.

Marty,

I'll let this be your project, but give me a buzz and let me know if you need anything, or in any way I can help...

are you having Mark Skaggs do the work on the rifle? or someone else?

If you are going to do some loading for him, I have a set of 308 dies, so I can do some handloading for him if need be..or you can borrow them...

I also have a Boyd's Gray Laminate Stock around here that will fit a 98 Mauser action....New without the box...

PM Scott F on some brass, He just got a big batch of surplus 308 brass, if he has some available, I'll be more than happy to pick up the cost on that...and getting it shipped down here...

let me know if I can do anything else to support you there Bud!

Good on you for reaching out to one of the Vets...

Nother bump.

Bob
marty, what else is needed. I have a couple scopes that might work fine. also have a mixture of hunting clothes I could spare. how is he for a knife, boots, gloves, that kinda thing?

let us know
Ryan, Jerry does not have a knife yet, or any clothes in camo or orange. I am in the process of working with Gophergunner on getting him some clothes. I dont know just yet where we will be when we are done with our discussion, but i think all he wanted was a camo jacket, long sleeve shirt, short sleeve shirt, and a hat. He has good boots.

His shirt size is XL. Thats all i asked him as that was all he said he wanted. Hes got lots of jeans.

As far as the scopes go, what do you have laying around? I showed him the Weaver i have, and he said he could barely make out the crosshairs. His eyes arent that good, and with his glasses on, he was having real trouble getting them into focus.

Shoot me a PM.
OK Guys, an update on the project.

Right now, thanks to the kindness of several members, i have $30 in cash to work with on Paypal courtesy of myself and Brazos.

A box of 140 grain TSXs courtesy of Ackley33806.

Oregonmuley donated a Bold Optima trigger, and a NIB Montana sling.

Brassman Donated 200 rounds of NEW PMC brass, 100 139 grain Hornady SP bullets, and a set of new, or near new RCBS dies.

Ranger Green is down for a box of 139 grain Hornady bullets, and 140 grain Sierra bullets.

Akbob is trying to figure out where we will go from here as he was going to donate the dies, but someone beat him to it. smile

And unless i am mistaken, Gophergunner is planning on working out details on a jacket, or shirts, maybe even a backpack.

Here are the pictures of the barreled action i promised. Its clean and ready to be blued, or blasted and coated.

At this point, Gents, i think the parts are almost taken care of, but we still need the funds to buy the stock, or the Duracoat, or pay for the smith fees.

Thats where it sits right now.

I spoke with Jerry about this project the other night, and he was moved to the point of tears, and said only that he doesnt feel he deserves it. He said he didnt give as much as others did, and he wasnt sure he could accept.

I told him that we appreciate what he did, and want to thank him by giving something back to him. A small token of our gratitude.
Thanks to Seafire for jumping on the ball and ordering a stock for this rifle!

Now all that remains is the smith work, rings and bases!
BIG thanks to VinceM here for donating a REALLY nice knife to this project. Check it out!

OK Gents, After looking at all the parts, and stuff gathered for this project, only a few small things remain.

As of right now, i have here, or soon to be here...

A new stock for the rifle.
New bases for the rifle.
A scope to put on it.
A new trigger for the rifle.
Sling studs.
A new Montana Sling.
200 rounds of new brass.
50 TSXs.
2-300 more bullets coming...
A killer knife for hunting.
Some clothes for the new hunter.
A nice set of dies.

Now, all i can see that we need is the Duracoat, and to pay for the smith work. Right now, we are about $120 shy of meeting the smith costs. He is discounting his costs as well.

So, what do you say guys? Can we raise the last of the funds?
