Abby, the terrier/cur cross, rescued from a shelter in Shreveport, LA by my bride. The best squirrel dog I've ever seen;

And, Suki, the Boxer-German shorthair cross. Rescued from a shelter outside of Atlanta by my bride. She was scheduled to be put down as she had been "adopted" by three other families who said that she was uncontrollable. Right...

The Queensland Heeler, ... "Halls Heeler" in it's truest form is a pretty fine creature, and an example of just how FINELY a line of stock dogs can be bred for both savvy, and obedience.

She's been on this place in S.E. Az. since 5 weeks of age,....and has ALWAYS seen rabbits as a food source, and something to chase.

This evening I was far enough ahead to finally let her into the orchard / garden / berry patch to check out my new source of fresh manure, critical to an aereated compost tea / liquid plant food stunt we're playing with. She's been asking me for weeks, but the one time her and the other ( Rescue) dog got in, it was utter chaos. This evening I kicked back, opened a beer, and let her come in alone, and give her a chance to respond to quiet commands, coaching, and steering, while sitting back out of the way. Told to "Sit / Stay" She sat for a good 5 minutes, just watching, and waiting for the next heads up.

[Linked Image]

Gotta' say that for an OLDER dog ( she's 9 now) she really showed a lot of class, and demonstrated to me ( and now to you all) that good breeding is critical to a dog's mission, and that you're wasting time if you haven't brought em' up right.
I'm feeling pretty proud of her, right now.

[Linked Image]

There can be NO denying that her main thought was that these new arrivals were a legitimate food group,....I think this particular pic speaks VOLUMES of "Dog-ese" (Maybe the next pic even moreso. grin )

[Linked Image]

She was, nonetheless fairly easy to manage with verbal commands and coaching, though I admittedly tossed the odd pebble and bounced it off her when her attention lapsed. She was very responsive, and looks to be interested in spending more time around the hutches.

[Linked Image]

Wagged her tail a LOT

[Linked Image]

Let's hoist one in praise to well bred and obedient Old Dogs !

Crossfire:

Are those meat rabbits you're raising there? What is the plan? is it cost effective with bought feed?

Thanks,

Jordan
Nope,....nothing to do with "Meat", although I'm not above deep frying the extras.

In terms of "Bought Feed", it seems that it would be hard to BEAT Rabbit, in terms of efficiency and weight gain per gram of protien,....or so I'm told.

My MAIN requirement, and these long ears' tasking is that they provide the fresh bacteria and enzymes to kick aereated compost tea into the highest gear possible. Think of it as the "Yeast" that one needs to get decent bread or such. I'd prefer to be using Alpaca manure, they are THE tidiest defecators / urinators in the Animal Kingdom but that would be prohibitively expensive.

There's a batch of their manure and damp litter brewing as we speak,....the aerobic "Bloom" of nitrogen fixing bacteria being nourished / fed by the addition of some common feed grade mollasses.

Once a guy gets this right, outside of trace minerals and desirable enzymes, he may never have to buy "Fertilizer" again.

This whole stunt is in the start up phase,....but I'll tell you that I've never fed ANYTHING to a plant before that demonstrated such immediate and gratifying results. Initial tests have been done with Berry cultivars in individual "Growing Wells", e.g. Feed one / Skip one.

Neat stuff.

No flies on properly fried Rabbit, either.

...oh,...neglected to mention that 40-50 % of their feed is already produced here on site. A big fat retired breeding doe can STAY fat, and produce what I'm after on a Tuna Can of Pellets daily, supplemented by Blackberry Twigs ( Blackberries my targeted "Cash crop"), Apple Twigs , Almond Twigs, Pear Twigs,....all here already, and always needing pruning.

Lotsa' fine agua, so good Alfalfa's no biggie, either.

Gracey had treed a big Sow Coon, and about the time I wandered up with a .22 and a flashlight was inspired to climb the damn tree and grab hold of the bugger.

I just gave her a really good going over, there are no deep wounds, or lacerations,....and I'd say the only real hurt was to her pride.

Had a very frustrating time with the final dispatch of the little villain,....thick, thorny brush, an over-long (and too light caliber) rifle,...

Gracey pretty much had to do it on her own.

I always had Labs until my divorce 9 years ago. My new wife came with a couple of step-daughters, and a little Cocker I wasn't real keen on initially. A few years back, she got out of the yard and was hit by a car. I spent the better part of the evening wandering the streets with a flashlight when I found her busted up in the ditch. Hauled her to the Vet and after surgery and rehab to teach her to walk again, she has pretty much adopted me as "the one" and doesn't pay much attention to the rest of the family. She's kind of grown on me a bit as well... whistle

Jorge, good thread.

Here is mine, he had an uncertain future when we took him in a couple of years ago. He is my constant companion and lives to go walking with me in the forest.

I find the stamina and agility of this breed surprising.

He is also a good vermin dog, loves to kill rats and mice.

Ouch! glad to hear she wasn't hurt any worse. Coons can be hell on dogs, even good sized ones.

When my Dad had his first small garage, a lady brought her car in. She lived only a few blocks away, so he gave her a ride back home in her car, then drove it back to the shop. He jacked it up, got on a creeper and rolled under the rear axle, and found a raccoon sitting on top of the differential. The coon was not amused.

Dad calls the lady: "ma'am, do you have a pet coon?"
Lady: "Huh???What??"
Dad: "a raccoon, I found one in your car, on top of the axle."

silence

Lady: "I definitely do not have a pet raccoon, but I will ask the neighbors"

She called back after a while, and none of her neighbors had one, nor knew anyone else who had one. She lived in the middle of a town of 100,000, and raccoons were definitely not common. smile

Dad & my brother eventually put on heavy leather welding gloves, (which it could bite through) caught it and stowed it in an empty drum, then that night took it outside town and turned it loose. It was not the tiniest bit tame smile
Quote

coons,...
They're somewhat rare in this immediate area, more common down along the san Pedro river, and in the Huachucas. This was Gracey's first encounter with one, and my bet is that should she tree another she'll not be quite so inclined to join in battle.

I figured it was the neighbor's cat, or a Squirrel.

That crummy old scope's coming off the "Garden Gun" and I'm mounting a red dot setup,....I reckon that will be a lot handier around this place, where one's almost always shooting into shadows and thick cover,....

Our three dogs. We have a 2.5y old roan coat GSP - Gertie that we took in as a rescue. We have 3 year old male GSP - Dillon and a 2 year old Lab / GSP / perhaps pit mix Ruby that was also a rescue.

[Linked Image]

They absolutely LOVE water

[Linked Image]

Dillon will retrieve anything and loves water retrieval. Sometimes he doesn't seem to think about the fact that shorthairs get cold! This water was quite chilly and I had to wrap him up tightly afterwards.

Crazy boy loves to chase bubbles.

This is my Bowi on point on a Sharptail.

I got him as a return to the breeder, because he was unmanageable. Which was hooey, he was quite manageable, as long as he got to go to the farm everyday, and run his fool head off for a couple of hours, dig out a dozen or so gophers, and run off a couple of feral cats and such.

The only dog I've ever hunted over that would pin down a pheasant with a point at 6 feet, a covey of sharptails at 30 yards, and a covey of huns at 40 yards, all on the same day. He just knew what kind of bird he smelled, and what it took to hold them.

Lost him 4 years ago at age 6 to cancer. I still miss him, sorely. I have his son, but he's not his father. I now have his grand daughter, too, from a different dam, and I have high hopes.
