...Turtles out of the stock pond. About as much fun as I remember. grin

Ah, but to be young again! wink

Got in on some of that a week or so ago. I had forgotten just how much fun it is.

Was using my .25 Marauder today. Pretty silent.

We use to go carp shooting (Bow & Arrow) out in Saginaw Bay Mich. back in the 70's and 80's.

The snappin turtles out there would average about 18" across, but some were as big as a man hole cover. It was common to see 10 or 12 a day.

My cousin once shot one with the bow, MAN was that thing pissed.

It didn't happen a second time, It was to hard to get your arrow back !!

Dang it man. I've spent a lot of time shooting carp but never even close to that.

Been far too many years since I've shot turtles or carp.

We used to shoot gar in the creeks and rivers with our .22's too.

That was a hoot!

I can't shoot turtles, like them too much.

I just stocked that tank with 250 hybrid catfish, 450 coppernose bluegills, and enough fathead minnows to create a healthy environment.

The fish food I feed is just under $60 per hundred pounds.

Can't have the turtles eating their fill of fish, or feed. wink

My cousin and I spent a half a day and a couple of boxes of .22's through a single shot, where a creek ran into Little River in Louisiana shooting gar, and yes, that was a hoot!

Never saw so many gar in one spot before or since.

Yep. Turtles, especially snapping turtles will wipe out a stock tank of it's fish population in a heart beat.
I love to head to one of our tanks with my Nylon 66 and put the hurt on them. Great offhand shooting practice too. And you can never kill em all, unfortunately.

I did that after I first put the fish in a couple of months ago, and got all but a couple of small ones. The big, dead ones washed to the bank and were really, really rank! sick

Got them out with a net and threw them up on the bank. Buzzards loved 'em! smile

Save the shells, make cool wall hangings and make a great canvas for art.

I didn't say you were wrong, just said what I couldn't do. Of course I'm not a fan of artificial environments. No food plots, not stock ponds, etc etc.

I remember when me and my cousin were young, we took his dads pump Winchester 22 and 2 boxes of ammo and wore out the tutles in the pond behind our house.

We ended up running out of ammo before we did turtles. Mostly the old mud turtles about the size of a gallon paint can. Man that was a lot of fun..
Posted By: chlinstructor Re: Shooting... - 04/25/15
Almost as much fun as shooting Prairie dogs!
Posted By: LeonHitchcox Re: Shooting... - 04/25/15
My late uncle had a pond that was infested with turtles. My son and I would go down there once or twice a year with our .22s and try to pop the turtles as they showed their heads at the surface. It was safe because the pond was in a bowl with a solid hill to catch anything that might ricochet.

After one shooting session, I got a call from my cousin who had allowed a friend to go fishing in the pond. When his friend got there, he immediately called J.C. and told him that he didn't know what had happened, but he was looking at turtle Armageddon. There were turtle shells all over the bank of the pond. I guess we did better than we thought.

We'd get way up on the bluffs above the Pecos upriver from Pandale and blast carp and gar with SKS's! Great fun!

Never had a chance to try it but it sounds like a "blast"!

I don't think I could shoot a turtle either.

I shoot Ground Squirrels though so I ain't passing judgment.
Posted By: SamOlson Re: Shooting... - 04/25/15
Never shot a turtle, rabbit, or squirrel. Pretty sure I didn't even shoot a gopher last year. Just kinda out grew shooting varmints I guess.

I did put about 30-40 rounds through your 16 gauge the other day though Charlie. Killed the hell outta some clay pigeons!

Yea,,, probably shouldn't kill chit ya don't eat or at least harvest the fur but I'm weak when it comes to ground dwelling varmints.
Probably go to hell for it but if it isn't for that I'm sure it'll be for something else.

Glad to hear that you're enjoying the shotgun.

BTW,,,, I saw a gal pulling calves at a dairy on TV today that called herself a mid wife.
What does that make you?
Posted By: SamOlson Re: Shooting... - 04/25/15
I guess you could call me a puzzy because I ordered a shoulder pad for the shotgun!

Had a nice bruise the next day. Gonna have an uber one on my calf(no pun intended) tomorrow.

Roped a big-ass son of a bitch this morning and it was all I could do to get the rope back off the fuucker. He got in one direct hit, ripped my pants, made me take a time out....grin

Dam,,,, you shoot that thing pretty good Sam.

I didn't like it for shooting clay's either but that's not what it was made for. You'll never notice the recoil when your hunting but you will notice that you don't mind carrying it all day.

FWIW,,, I shot trap for years and the only time in my life I ever ran 100 straight was with that gun.
And YES I felt it the next day.

Charlie, exactly. It didn't bother me until about +20 rounds, which would be a week or two worth of bird hunting.

100 rounds in a day?!

You're tougher than me!

for me, that happy memory is of rat killing in the old barn. Flashlight, a .22 single shot, couple of 9 year old boys...........

I was shooting light target loads.

I doubt I'd make it to 50 shooting those #6 PMC's I sent you.

Glad to you shooting the old girl though.

You've shot it more since you've had it than I did the last ten years.

Darn. Would have been nice getting a closeup of thst gun, Sam. Hate to hear you had to break a second box to get 4 in a row though. wink
Posted By: SamOlson Re: Shooting... - 04/26/15
Charlie, I was shooting target loads that day as well. Ordered a flat from Cabelas. Might have to order another!

Eye, there may have been more than one 'take' required.......

My favorite was shooting bullfrogs in the 60's with the 22 rifle then feasting on their fat little legs
