Dallas Officers on Leave After Headquarters Gunfire
DALLAS (WFAA) -- The Dallas Police Department has placed 14 officers on routine administrative leave in the wake of Saturday's gunfire at police headquarters, according to a source.
It is standard procedure for any employee who has fired a weapon. Investigators were still taking statements from officers who were involved in the wild shootout shortly after midnight Friday.
The gunfire caused heavy damage to the police headquarters building and to several squad cars, although there were no casualties.
The suspected gunman, who was firing from an armored vehicle, is also believed to be responsible for leaving several bags of explosives around the building. He led police on a pursuit to the parking lot of a fast food restaurant in Hutchins, where he refused to surrender.
Identified by investigators and family members as James Boulware, the van's driver was shot and killed about four hours later by a police sniper. His armored vehicle was then destroyed by "planned detonations" in order to neutralize the danger from explosives believed to be in the van.
Police said they would release more information about their investigation into the incident at an unspecified time later Sunday.
