To get into the area you hunt and or once you are there. Was reading Jim Corbett's books, again after 25 years, and he did some serious walking.

About 175 yards.

hunt for what?

moose? no farther than I have to, hopefully no more than a mile pack

sheep, the minimum was 2-3 miles ( 1 sheep) the average about 12 miles to get to em and then the other 12 to get him out. A few longer than that, but thankfully not many

35 yards on weekdays.

Next month I will have to walk six miles and gain about 2K' to kill my quarry. And kill them I shall.

But I much prefer shooting stuff from the truck.

Much of it looking over his shoulder too!

From what I recall, 5 or 6 miles walk would have been an afternoons stroll for him and hikes of 20 to 25miles to change hunting areas were not uncommon..

If I wanted to hunt whitetail and axis from a stand, about 75 yards. I don't. I will be doing a number of miles a day come fall chasing elk at 11-12k on the Continental Divide.

I hunt mostly private land and park the truck about 3/4 mile from where I'll hunt. Sometimes it is as little as 300yds if it is a small tract. Don't slam the truck door!

Probably anywhere from 0 yards up to 6 miles on average. I'm hunting from where I park the truck and go as far as needed to find critters (or my ambition takes me). More often than not, the distance I travel is directly proportional to how far I'm willing to pack out meat. I tend to shoot elk further back in than deer likely because I have to work harder to find them. But then I've passed up shots on deer when I wouldn't have on elk, so maybe I'm more willing to pack elk meat than deer...

That's one way to stay in shape.

This sounds like it has the makings of another excellent adventure.....is Shrapnel going to be there?

In Florida and Georgia, where I hunt hogs and deer, it's not a long walk to the killing fields. Drive to the place, and park. Hunting farms, private timber land, and National Forests, can mean some distance to get to the venue though.
I still hunt, don't sit in a tree, so I get a fair amount of distance in, but it takes a long time.

At home less than 1/4 mile most of the time. In Southern Oklahoma on old timber tracks I have walked about 5 miles a day on a number of days. In Mexico I have walked 15 miles in one day, 12 miles in Zimbabwe, 9 miles in Colorado and 7 in New Mexico. Pheasant hunting in Kansas I have put in over 10 miles a number of days.

I'm hunting soon as I walk out the door, but my best areas are about a mile max farther back into Shawnee National Forest.

It's all steep ridges and drainages so I bone and pack the deer out. No other way unless horses and it's easier to pack out myself.

Negative. Just me and that boy that claims I'm his dad.

I was a attacked by rock chucks last year and I only had my bear defense ammo.

This year will be different. Revenge varminting.

Biggest deer of my life I shot from the back deck attached to the house. The rifle was stored at the back door. So 2-3 yards. Not average tho. I've drastically reduced hunting now that it sounds like attack of the UTV's in the woods on opening morning.

I'm hunting elk as soon as I'm off the road. That's not saying I'm finding one for the next 2 or 3 miles, though.
Posted By: RockyRaab Re: How far do you walk - 07/20/15
I generally walk about five miles looking for my golf ball. Once a week. Does that count?

Oh, and pedaling my kayak for four or five hours is just like walking.

I no longer hunt animals but when I did I preferred to walk in no farther than I thought I could drag the buck of my dreams. Which is to say not very far.

Yes, hunting as soon as I leave the rig/camp. About 5 miles out if there are no horses in camp. Further if we have some steeds.
Posted By: StoneCutter Re: How far do you walk - 07/20/15
About 1/2 mile. Most of that is across a field. If I kill something, I drive the truck across the field and no more than a 200 to 300 yard drag. Ive shot deer and had them run into that field so I could drive right to them. It seems like most of the time they'll run the opposite direction. That sucks.

For the whitetails at home, have shot a couple of bucks from the deck. Those weren't planned though. Have several stands on the property from 75 yards to 400 yards from the house.

Not hunting as I prefer to hunt. More just killing meat. But it is what I do. It's part of me, I guess. Real fun hunts are where there is room to roam. Caribou, moose, elk and mule deer hunts have been great for that. Not enough wide open property here for that.

The walking distance depends on what is being sought, the chosen location and how hard it is to find the game. Could be through the back gate and into the forest for elk/deer/turkey/javelina or could be many hunting miles walked from camp for those or other game if the choice is to drive to another locale. The older one gets, the less one tends to wander due to the challenege of getting bagged game to a road or camp.

Forgot we have so much hunting close in here. Corbette, in the story I'm reading now, said he left the place he was at, to walk home, 25 miles. Would average 5-10 miles a day when hunting. Of course was hunting man eating tigers and leopards and not deer or anything. One of the stories I just finished, he'd walked for 10 days to get to the hunting area. and a lot of the walking when actually hunting was through the brush, woods, whatever, once a track was found or a drag, or whatever. He had his servant and workers who carried his gear with him. Also, this in the mountains, so some serious up and down hill stuff too. AND he was in his 50s or older during a lot of it. Killed his final tiger when 63.

When he got to an area, his men and servant/cook, would stay at a camp site while he was hunting.

Usually 350-450 yards on my local hunting lease.

Wonder how many of the folks on here would even consider walking 20 miles a day. Friend of mine in Aust. says there are some places in New Zealand where you walk for 2 days to get to the hunting area, but can take copter I and hunt those extra two days. Today, I'm sure a lot of folks flown into these out back areas in India. But still, hunting a man-eater not a one day or maybe even a one week hunt, as a number of his lasted months.

Since I gave up deer hunting, I walk as far as the bathroom - at least three times a day.
Sometimes I make it - sometimes I don't.

From the recliner, I have a huge pile of corn I hunt. I like to hunt at night also.
