I'm for the most conservative person who I think can win....and the more I listen to Cruz, the more I think he can win.
This is a subset of society and as such you'll find good hard working people, lazy people, generous people, greedy people, smart people, dumb people, righteous people, unrighteous people, conservatives, liberals, clueless, etc.,
Not surprising at all if you think about it.
One of the issues we have is the absence of uplifting leaders who are running for the R nomination.
Reagan made people feel good about themselves AND expressed true conservative values.
Trump gives vent to anger-not necessarily a winning proposition in the general election.
Cruz is brilliant but cannot do a soundbite that makes people feel good about themselves.
Rubio is good looking and young-- but inexperienced and cannot articulate how (or if) he has learned from his mistakes.
Romney was the real deal on the inside-but did not have the courage to show it on the outside. He also would not say--I know Obama are will fail because Romney care failed. That needed sayin'. Romney could Get the crowd feeling good about themselves -- but he never left the focus group words behind.
So, I am stuck with no one. My gut tells me Rubio/Nikki Haley is the winning ticket over Bernie or Hillary.
Would prefer Mitch Daniels.

Unfortunately I think a lot of folks would rather go for a high percentage, partial win, than a riskier true win. We are a pretty beat down bunch right now.

Romney lost because, if I remember the thinking at the time, he was rich, entitled and out of touch. Neither he nor his sons ever served in the military, purposely and people thought he was too out of touch with the real world. Sound like anyone else we know? Or should I say.....sounds like a whole lot of candidates on both sides.
What worries me the most is the demoncrats running one candidate for president while we run three. Our vote will be divided and even if we have superior numbers the democrat will win. A politician who stumps like a televangelist isn't my idea of a conservative. So if Cruz gets people waiving their arms in the air with that wide eyed stairy look so prevalent with the Sunday evening gospel crowd, they are free to believe he is the second coming. For many of us, we can smell the stink and we ain't buying it.
For myself, I don't care about the homos or abortion. I want someone who will get the government's hand out of my pocket and my life. It's as simple as that.
Our government had been doing the brain washing over time. With all the free stuff and entitlements. Which have been used by elected officials to buy votes to keep themselves in office/power. Originally some of the programs were to give folks a hand up , not a handout , to get people thru a bad time they be going thru. I don't chime in on many of these political threads, but what the heck. For background, I am as conservative as they come. However, I think getting a republican in the White House is more complicated than most of us realize. Getting that right mix of values, speaking skills, looks, clean closet, etc etc is hard to find. We can't just run out the most conservative (I know we would like to) if that person isn't electable. So then what? Some turn to a different mix, some stick with a conservative who will lose, some go some other direction and we end up with a moderate leaning candidate which ends up fracturing the party (and losing). The key to beating the democrats in my humble opinion, is find a person who holds the conservative values that we hold dear AND who is a charismatic speaker who can articulate his/her positions that doesn't turn off the middle. Like it or not, we need a sizable percentage of the middle in order to win the election. I detest Obama, but I begrudgingly have to admit, he was able to speak to both his base and enough of the middle to win. Trump did the same. However, I fear Trump has lost the majority of those in the middle that voted for him. I don't have the answer for 2020, but I think that understanding and capitalizing on more than just the candidate's policies is going to be needed to secure another win.
