Just a heads up if you are going to be traveling international your travel must be complete 6 months before the actual expiration date on your passport.
Leaving for Mexico Saturday and just found out as I was confirming flights Deb's passport expires Oct 10. I asked here earlier and she didn't realize there was a specific date instead of a month.
Any ways just make sure your travel is complete a full 6 month before expiration.Actually renewing 7 months before your passport expires is prudent.
Deb now has the pleasure of rushing out to get a new passport photo, then driving to passport office in Buffalo for an 11am appointment and maybe a return trip tomorrow to pick up the new passport if not ready today

Holy sheet, Dan. Now you have me wondering.... We're planning an October trip again this year. Not sure on the expiration of our passports.

plus my buddy Raul invites me every year to go to cabo and i haven't gone because i haven't made the time to go get a passport.

My wife just renewed and they say up to 6-8 weeks to process. She got hers back right around 2 weeks.

Need to get a new one. One of these days I might just run away to Canada to fish and stay there. grin

Got mine through the local Post Office. Took ten days.

Canada is an interesting country. They have a handle on immigration.
So go fish, but I'll bet if you decided to stay they would kick you out.

I had to renew passports for both my kids recently.

I agree that you should definitely allow plenty of time. Once filed, the renewal applications get processed fairly quickly, but there are a lot of new requirements that must be met. Also, our local post office (which is a great way to do it) is getting dozens of applications every day, which clogs them up.

One other thought. These are post office employees. Nothing against them, as the ones tasked for this do know how to do it, but like so many low level civil service types, they know only one way to proceed and have no flexibility whatever. That also slows down the process.

Thanks for the heads up. I had no idea.
Posted By: 2legit2quit Re: Passport Warning - 04/12/16
Yep thanks Dan. Another one here that needs to start the process

Just looked at mine last night Didn't pay any attention to expiration
Posted By: Owl Re: Passport Warning - 04/12/16
My passport expired right after the US Government changed the laws about re-entry.

I had not planned any International travel so I did not renew.

Well, the wife and I decided to go visit Vancouver last year. I went through the whole application process again. Because I did this 6 months prior to travel and had no worries about processing time. Everybody told me that I needed to spend the extra money for quick processing. I told them that I had 6 months and that I was not in any big hurry. I did not spend the money, and only paid for the "extra" 30 pages to be added to the booklet, and paid for the plastic ID card.

And guess what? It cam back to me in 10 business days. Sure glad I planned ahead... just in case.

Typical government BS. Should be able to use a passport until it expires or the date is meaningless.

Your global entry or local boater option cards will need to be updated with the new passport number as well.

I had to expedite a passport once. $200 fee to a third party, and I had my new PP in hand in less than 24 hours. Or you can read this:

Do I need one to get into Texas?
Posted By: dvdegeorge Re: Passport Warning - 04/12/16
I had all the paper work and details in order before Deb woke up this morning. She got here picture and shuffled of to Buffalo. She was in 15 minutes before her appointment
She was done in less than 5 minutes, she's having lunch and shopping to kill time. It will be ready for her to pick up at 3 pm
$110 for the renewal fee and $60 to expedite
The mall shopping will likely be many times that

Good Head's up Dan. Additionally, also consider getting one of the credit card versions - I've heard there are times when they are helpful.

It not going to get better for travel.....

Probably you do from Colorado. As I recall, the Texans are those highly noisy visitors that infest Colorado on vacation, and so there is a bit of testiness between the two. smile

Here in NM, we recently had a scare where the feds were not going to recognize NM drivers licenses as proper ID for getting into federal facilities, because they were being issued to "undocumented" aliens.

It took a rule change to issue a different kind of license to non-citizens, failing which we were all going to have to use passports as ID.

And yet, she gets in the shopping trip, too.

Here's my question - if the damned passport is still valid and not expired, why wouldn't it work? Does the expiration date NOT mean expiration? WTF?

Lol

You pick yer poison in this world, if you're lucky

You made the right choice Dan

You know the gov't is always gonna screw you

Been that way as long as I can remember. There are expediting services that can turn them around pronto for a fee.

Leaving Sat Morning for St Martin and then Purto Rico and always use my Passport when traveling.

So, I show up at SFO from HKG with my passport that expires in 5 mo, 29 days and DHS isn't going to let me in?

Or is this a US air carrier thing?
Posted By: EdM Re: Passport Warning - 04/12/16
In my experience it is the country to which you want to travel too that has the requirement.
Posted By: heavywalker Re: Passport Warning - 04/12/16
The reason for the 6 month from expiring is that in some countries you can stay up to 6 months on a simple passport. It is to keep your passport from expiring while you are out of country.

Yep. Our local county clerk sends the applications to N'Awlins for expedited processing, turns around in about 5-7 days IIRC. Been a while since I had to do that. As I recall, the expedited processing fee was about a hundred bucks. Well worth it.

Correct. If you have a Passport agency near by you can save the big $ fees a processing agency will charge you. The fee from US Gov is $60 to expedite whether you express mail or show up in person

Some how I was blamed for Deb's oversight, even though I asked her to check here passport for the 6 months. All I care about right now is fishing according to her! LMAO she is kind of correct about the fishing , I'd rather not be going and be fishing here, weather is finally breaking going to be in the 60's this weekend and 70 on Monday...I'll make the best of it and fish a day for sails and marlin and call it good wink

You've been conned into her shopping trip, and still don't even realize it yet.

This wasn't about the passport; this was about her going shopping because you go fishing.

That is a nice one! I released my sail, so didn't get any good pics with it, wish I would have now.

We released the fish after the quick photo

I just go down to the local Home Depot parking lot and talk to a guy named Julio. He can get me as many passports as I want.

Doc I won't complain, I did alright when Deb found me in a large crowd downtown at a street festival.
She may wish she didn't pursue me now!
