Donald Trump picks Gen. John Kelly for DHS secretary

cbsnews - CBS News - Wednesday, December 7, 2016

LtGen Paul X. Kelly

Donald Trump is tapping Gen. John Kelly to run the Department of Homeland Security, CBS News confirms.

The final request and acceptance, sources told CBS’ Major Garrett, occurred while Kelly was traveling in Europe. His pick for DHS secretary will be announced by the transition staff in the coming days.

Kelly is the third general tapped by the president-elect, joining Gen. James Mattis, Mr. Trump’s pick to become the next secretary of Defense, and Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, Mr. Trump’s incoming national security advisor.

Like Mattis, Kelly is a Marine with a reputation for bluntness.
Kelly was the commander of U.S. Southern Command until earlier this year. In that posting, he oversaw American military operations in South America and Central America.

Before that, he commanded American forces numerous times in Iraq, and spent a year as the top Marine in that country. He then was an aide to defense secretaries Leon Panetta and Robert Gates.

Created after the 9/11 attacks, the Department of Homeland Security now employs nearly 250,000 people. Trump pledged repeatedly to better secure America’s borders on the campaign trail, and it is likely that Kelly, should he take the position, will be central to that effort.

Unlike Flynn, Kelly did not endorse Mr. Trump during the campaign and indicated he would be open to serving in either a Republican or Democratic administration. He has also referred to domestic politics as a “cesspool” in an interview over the summer with Foreign Policy magazine.

Kelly, who served nearly 46 years in the Marine Corps, is the highest-ranking American military official to lose a child in combat since 9/11. His son, Marine Lt. Robert Michael Kelly, was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2010.

CBS News’ Major Garrett, Christopher Isham, Steve Chaggaris, and Arden Farhi contributed reporting to this story.
Regardless of other characteristics, Trump seems to be tapping people with a penchant for "no bullshit"

It will make for really interesting media spin if there's no room for ambiguity....

Soooooo refreshing...
Better qualifications than being transgender. I like it.
good or bad, this is what you see when a politician isn't elected and the president elect doesn't have a drawer full of IOUs.

What he seems to be tapping is experience instead of pundits specialising in political popularism.
Handy not being encumbered by a major political entity and it's chains.

I wish him well.
I'm sure he'll do a good job, but may I express some reservations??? While I have no problem with a former general heading up the DOD (Mattis), I'd be a little more comfortable if DHS was headed by a civilian. Maybe that's just me.....
Marines

Blunt, no-nonsense Marines.

Kelly retired back in January 2016. He's as civilian as you and me.
I'd have actually preferred a businessman for head of Homeland Security.

One who specializes in breaking companies apart.

Department of Homeland Security

The Department of Homeland Security was formed after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as part of a national effort to safeguard the United States against terrorism.

It kinda looks more Military than Civilian, to me. IMHO.
Look at the intensity on these cabinet picks faces. They WILL get the job done. They are NOT pushovers or "yes men." We're gonna get America back again.

"Kelly retired back in January 2016. He's as civilian as you and me."

I thought a Marine was ALWAYS a Marine....😜

Seriously, though, no concerns about a military man heading up a civilian police force?? Not competency issues, but possible "militarization of the police" issues.
Maybe now the Border Patrol will get those FLIR equipped Apache gunships they've been needing...

There are Marines and former Marines. wink

Nothing wrong with a little "militarization" on the border looking south!

You bet Buddy!
If he concentrates on keeping the filth out, and relinquishes domestic invasiveness currently propagated by the agency, as fostered by Janet Nappy, then all is good.

Maybe gun owning veterans will be taken off the watch list?
Well, either Trump is hiring real no nonsense people with a track record of competence or he actually is planning the complete takeover of the US Government and is situating military men in place since they are used to following orders and will round up and intern all Democratic voters without blinking an eye.

I tend to suspect the former.

I very seriously doubt if Trump is planning on any kind of government takeover, but I suspect that the behavior of the radical left during the election may have played a part in his selection of General Kelly.

No bag limit tags for dems wouldn't be bad either.
You can count on that. Marines may no longer be on active duty but they will be Marines forever. Mad Dog and now Kelly it's going to be fun to watch.

Trump did say he was going to drain the swamp

Looks like he is getting a good team in place to do so and if they resist the team will be prepared to do their jobs the hard way.

Starting to see more of these as of late, really sickens me to what women and the public school systems have done to the once American Male!
I had the opportunity to serve under General Kelly when he was the SOUTHCOM commander, and I spoke with him on several occasions, and I have nothing but respect for him. I think he'll make an outstanding leader for DHS, and I imagine a number of personnel in that organization are getting very nervous about now.

Thats for Damn sure.
I might be wrong, but am I the only one that would like to see the DHS shut down?

Nothing against Gen. Kelly, but I find the idea of a State run police outfit disturbing.

What are your thoughts on the validity and constitutionality of the FBI, Federal Marshals, etc?
I like this pick.

I like very blunt. I like no BS. I also like that he didn't necessarily agree with Trump as a POTUS, and that he was picked anyway.

I don't know that doing away with ports of entry, the Border patrol, the Secret Service, FEMA, and the Coast Guard is the best idea.

Certainly not, but why was adding and additional layer of bureaucracy necessarily a good idea?

Has it enabled more flexibility and cooperation within the agencies that DHS now administers?

To my way of thinking, it gave the executive branch too much power, seeing how the appointment of one man by the president now controls the rudder of a great, unwieldy ship.

Admittdly, a DHS under a President Trump is more appealing than an Obama, or a Clinton.....but I am still not sure what problem the creation of DHS has solved.

I still dont like the idea of the Real ID.
Gonna be one appointed position steering the ship regardless.

Doesn't matter if you call it the DOD, the DOJ, the DHS, or the GFY.

Dave
Haha! I think the GFY should be headed by the States themselves.

Like i said, I might be wrong, but I dont see what problem the creation of DHS solved.
I am predicting a huge change in how DHS is being run. smile

They will create ambiguity where they cannot find it.

Destroy the biased traitorous media, and progressive lieberalism will follow.
Thats no doubt a good thing. I suppose we are never to be rid of it, so might as well try and make the best of it Mannlicher.

http://www.vox.com/2015/2/17/8047461/dhs-problems

All of those agencies were in place before 9/11. The problem was the legal barriers put up by a series of democrat let Congress and the WHite House as well as government bureaucracy/worker incompetence. DHS was and remains an unnecessary bureaucracy.
If we're gonna start removing "unnecessary" from the federal government you'd better have a pretty big fugkin' knife.

I agree!
I vote we start with the Department of Education.
And the Departments of Energy and Education and the EPA and ATF. Completely useless

If you look at what has been happening on the border as an invasion, a military man in charge, is a logical choice. So far, the intent has been to avoid pissin off Mexico. Eff that. We ARE being invaded.

Military man being in charge of the TSA, though?

Doesn't bother me. Seems we are at war with Islam, we just won't say so. I would rather have somebody who knows how to eliminate a threat, not minimize public perception of one.

Trumps batting average is '1000' at this point.

Outstanding.

Can't get enough MAGA and it's a bonus watching liberal heads explode.

"Abdul, you have been randomly selected for a further security check, please step into this booth."

"Mohammet, you have been 'randomly' selected for a further security check..."

"Ibrihim, you have been 'randomly' selected for a further security check..."

"Bob, you go on ahead and have a nice day, ya' hear?"
TSA is a joke, currently.

P.C. shaking down an elderly granny in a wheelchair is ignorant.

Not many grannies known to be terriorists.

But, you gotta look at Muzzies, including surveillance of Mosques and Imams who radicalize young heads full of mush.

Now, all Muzzies aren't Jihadists.

But, all Jihadists are Muzzies...

Go figure.
