I have always had good relationships with Dell especially when I could call someone here in the US. 9 month old 3452 mdl with Windows ten. Nothing but problems with it. Talked to India for over 12 hours in 3 days and the problems still exist. To be truthful they have really tried to help me but its the Windows they say that is screwed up. The company wants you to have their computer but doesn't stand behind what they put in it. Microsoft should be outlawed. Just venting. They also asked me nicely to stop cussing about it
That's funny, mine works great, maybe it's operator error. What seems to be the problem?
Posted By: nighthawk Re: Dell computers suck - 01/02/17
Way, WAY back, back when there was a Gateway, Dell was known to not be the best at integrating hardware and software, particularly on their low end line. Hit that price point boys! Maybe some things don't change? And having to deal with 10 just makes matters worse.

I've always had good luck with Dells, but I do tend to buy near the top of thier line. I use them for work so I need good solid machines. My main machine got hit with the Win 10 upgrade, against my wishes and best efforts to avoid it. I've had nothing but trouble since. I've totally reloaded the software and programs and still have problems with email, Antivirus, saving files and opening files. I also lost access to my most up to date contact list that is my life blood at work. It's there but you can't open it.

All this hell just so Microsoft has a better platform to run thier ads on your computer. I will be glad when the next guienus comes along to replace Microsoft.

Mine works well; no issues.

Windows sucks big time, regardless of the hardware.
Posted By: Scott F Re: Dell computers suck - 01/02/17
Dell works great. Windows is crap. Smart people ditch everything Microsoft.

It's already here, it's called Linux.

There are some here very knowledgeable about it, just start a tread about it and they will answer.

I have a unit running on it for the last year with no virus protection and haven't had one single problem.

I have to find the time to learn the OS and I will be switching everything over to it.

Go get yourself an apple and not worry about it for 5 years.
Posted By: nighthawk Re: Dell computers suck - 01/02/17
Apple? I'd rather go back to the Tandy Color Computer in the basement. At least I could rewrite the OS as needed. I do have Linux on a partition but there's that steep learning curve. (If you want to dick around with it, even the installation is pretty straight forward these days.)

Six months into a Dell Workstation with Win 7. Fast and flawless.
Posted By: rockdoc Re: Dell computers suck - 01/02/17
Yep, give me Windows 7, you can keep 10, even when it is a free upgrade.
Posted By: night_owl Re: Dell computers suck - 01/02/17
Ubuntu Linux is free, simple to use and will solve half to all your computer problems.

My Asus/Windows 7 combo has been working for over five years now. I'm strongly considering a MacBook to replace it after it dies.

Buy a Dell re-ferb for $200-$300 with 7 installed and have fun. When 10 or worse is all there is, I'll buy anything without Microsoft installed.
Posted By: coyote268 Re: Dell computers suck - 01/02/17
With my old computer I had 8 home with out a single problem but now with ten its a nightmare. The Dell service people (India) even admit there have been a lot of problems. If you have ten with no problems be thankful but be prepared for the worse.

I have three Dell laptops in use at Gun shows. Two run 7 and the newest 10. To date no problems with either one. I'm holding my breath that the 10 Dell doesn't crash.

my experience is low end Dell computers are iffy at best,

but their business line are quite good.

for now, on the low end, If I buy new I prefer Asus (not Acer) computers but I've been buying refurbished Dell Business computers for the last few years and have been very pleased. For $200 I can get a computer that was released 2 years ago and will still be going after cheaper models are obsolete.

For what 90% of people use a laptop for - a 2 year old computer is more than adequate.

More often than not you can tell the difference in a "quality" computer by looking to see if it has an i-series CPU. Its considered "future proofed" if it does meaning that you can upgrade storage and the CPU will support upgrades to operating systems, patches and service releases.

AMD makes good CPUs but its often difficult to get an apples to apples comparison. Most laptop that go with an AMD cpu (or an Intel Celeron, atom, etcs.,) are designed for the cheapest price point and have a pretty limited shelf life in terms up of upgrades.

The best example I know is when my mom bought an e-Series computer with a celeron CPU. The CPU wasn't so much of the bottle neck - out of the box Windows ran fine on it, but as windows kept putting out more service releases , the memory consumption bloated, her computer slowed down - and it was maxed out on what you could do to upgrade it. The $350 computer she bought lasted about 3 years and the last year of use was just frustration.

Going back to Dell, that's the risk you take with any low end or entry level purchase of any brand. Underneath the cover - while there are a variety of component makers out there, there isn't anything dramatically different about any of them. You just don't want to be limited on what it can do down the road. Capacity and upgradability is the key

Its kinda like an AR-15

I probably do need to learn more about Linux, but for work I need to be as compatible as possible with clients computers and software, which means Microsoft stuff. Until they change, I'm stuck.

Do you think those India boys from Microsoft service department that call 4 or 5 times per week to tell me they have detected a problem with my computer can help? smirk

I am writing this on a Dell I bought back in Jan. 2010. (6 years,jmgraham1986) I refused the Windows 10 upgrade, and installed the code to refuse the forced "updates" from Microsoft.

My step son is the only one of 4 of us who runs a Mac, he curses it alot.

I run a credit card virtual terminal, two websites, work email, 5 personal email accounts, tons of forums, and never have a problem.

I have seen people have trouble with Apple computers, Dell's, Acer, whatever brand you choose. Most of the time its a failure to research the problem independent of idiot Technical Support crowd in India.

Not the one I got. And about 1 in 10 of their pro support reps have a clue.

The next PC I get will not be a Dell.

Been apple ever since they came out. Have had tiny issues a few times. NOthing compared to PCs at both our work jobs....

Current Mac is probably right at 10 years old and its getting time to upgrade I guess, but its still fine and never had any kind of virus issue or things not running right etc....

Did you ever make a restore point?
Posted By: nighthawk Re: Dell computers suck - 01/03/17
rost495,

My disdain for Apple goes back to the early days. I was about to spring for an Apple II and then Apple went to selling in boutique stores and the price almost doubled. Then came the Mac with a closed system. Your computer became what Apple thought you should have and you paid a premium price for that. "No user serviceable parts inside." Screw Apple, I'll have a machine configured the way I want and running the software I want. And at a fair price. As an expensive appliance maybe it's good, I'll never know.

Flame off. smile

------------------------

For fun I just looked it up, the desktop I'm typing from is a high end Gateway refurb from 2003, running XP SP3 and Linux. Been through numerous repairs (chips and fans do wear out) and upgrades. With an open system you can do that yourself and cheaply. Yes it needs to be replaced sometime soon (and I'll build it myself) but actually this thing does everything I want (XP is stable). Code has become so bloated programs could execute more snappily but it isn't bad, not a gamer.

But it's not Apple the computer in my sights so much as Apple the company.

People really do that? Think I used one once, one the system had made. People probably should do that. And make backups too. grin

There's your problem.

Get a machine with Windows 7 professional.

I'm not a huge MS fan, but run some software that only works in Windows so it is what it is.

At work I'm still using a Dell Workstation purchased in 2004. It will hang in there with anything else in the shop with
3D-graphics and GIS work. A great unit, but it was $7K when new.

Windows 10 is the worst operating system ever to come out, and I hate Macs with a passion. Windows should have stuck with 7 instead of trying to be a mac operating system.
Posted By: nighthawk Re: Dell computers suck - 01/03/17
1minute,

My 2003 Gateway cost $2364, refurb at the factory outlet store. Scrimped a bit with memory at 512mb - who the hell would need more than that?? laugh The original Tandy Color Computer came standard with 4k, went with the 16k high memory option. Then memory prices dropped and the hacking began. Then the Color Computer III came out. The machine would support 32k directly and 256k if you hacked it to tickle a certain chip. Hacked the OS (such as it was) to support four virtual machines at 64k each. And hacked in 2 DS/DD 3ΒΌ floppies when the price dropped to somewhere near reasonable. Fun stuff, a guy could understand the whole thing as opposed to current machines and Windows. Nobody can truly understand Windows, starting with XP at least.

Helped friends get their Windows 8 (Metro) machine working. I can't imagine an OS/GUI worse than that sucker though I never fooled with 10.
