Let me give you another "N" word and how it gets thrown about, and in doing so you can see how I view the other. Let me say up front that by forbidding its use throws a real monkey wrench in the process of healing, and it papers over history. I don't like the idea that it can't be used.

The other "N" word that comes to mind is Nazi. We all use it. We all think we know what it means. I'm 3rd Gen German American, and I've had it used on me, and my sons have been called it throughout their lives. Everyone thinks you can call a German a Nazi and it's somehow deserved. Y'all use it on each other all the time.

Yes, there were National Socialists. They even had a political party here in the States. I can even point out the old Bund Hall here on the north side of Cincinnati. However, it wasn't just Germans going to those meetings, and most Germans could not stand that crap. My family left everything behind to escape that garbage and come here to America.

What is offensive about it is that it is the modern variation of a whole string of epithets for non-Anglo Germanic folk that have been floating around since before the Founding. What is offensive about it on the receiving end, is that 300 years of German American history gets wiped out and replaced with a convenient meme that covers everything bad in the world.

At one point in our American history, Germans outnumbered Anglos in this country. 60% of Americans before 1900 or so were of German heritage and not Anglo. However, before the Civil War it was common for them not to be considered white. We got lumped in with Dutch, and Scandanavians, we were called "squareheads."

WWI changed everything. In order to go to war against the Kaiser, the Wilson administration had to drum up support. He instituted a propaganda effort of immense proportions, and in predominantly German town like Cincinnati, the Germanic influence was wiped out overnight. The German street names were changed. The German celebrations were banned.

I was researching for a novel a while back and was trying to find the origin of a "Turnwater" memorial in a local Cincinnati park. There was a dance pavilion, a reflecting pool and on the hill behind a magnificent memorial all grown over and forgotten with the name "Turnwater" on it. What I found out was that Turnwater, was actually "Turnvater" or "Father of the Turners," and the portrait on the monument was Frederich Jahn, their founder. I also found out that Inwood Park was built over a converted dump by and for the Turners, and the dance pavillion served as a reviewing stand for massive parades.

At one time, 10,000 Germans used to regularly parade up the steep Vine Street Hill past Inwood Park doing gymnastics all the way up the hill in honor of Jahn, The Father of Modern Gymnastics. He invented gymnastics, and even though we have them in our schools and even the Olympics, we've forgotten their founder. We were made to forget him, because he was German and in WWI that was bad. Believe me, I lived near Inwood Park for a decade. Vine Street Hill is a tough walk. I wouldn't want to be cartwheeling my way up it.

So why do I bring up Nazi's and Turners when I'm supposed to be commenting on THE BIG N WORD? My reason is this. Someone is trying to make us forget something. I don't know who it is. I don't know why. I just know there is something huge at the bottom of this. My advice to African Americans has been for a long time: stop this. Turn it around. You don't want to make them take away this word. It is a powerful word and by making folks stop saying it, they're making us stop thinking about it.

Every major city used to have Turners. There used to be big processions of German Americans in the streets. We were not trying to conquer the world. We were just trying to conquer our own bodies and celebrating what it meant to be human and alive. They made us stop, because we were German.

The "N" word is a scab that the mothers don't want us to pick at. Black mothers, white mothers-- they're all mothers and every time they catch us, they slap our hands. Meanwhile what is underneath is left to fester. I say screw 'em. I don't want African Americans to end up like the Germans country, deliberately forgotten.

I know. Y'all are going to say African Americans are over-represented in the media. No. Sure, there are black faces everywhere, but the story is not real. It is contrived. It is the same mechanism that made us forget real Germans and relegated us to the jackbooted thugs of History. They made us Sargent Schultz and Colonel Klink, and said that underneath we all dream of being Doctor Mengele. African Americans are getting that same treatment.

I do not have a politically correct bone in me. I call people as I see them. A druggie is called a druggie. White trash are called white trash. A n****r is called a n****r. A Black person is called a Black person. A kook is called a kook. Despite what out friends on the left would like to have us believe, we are not all alike. There is very big difference in people....culturally, ethnically, politically, morally, and so on and so forth. There is a faction in our country, the socialists, who would love to take away our heritage and leave us with nothing but what they want us to have.....allegiance to them. Look at the way they're doing away with any and all symbols of the Confederacy. There is absolutely nothing in a 150 year old statue or flag that's going to affect anyone today. Yet, they're considered offensive to some people, and must be removed. Well, a lot of things offend me, including some posters on here, but I don't asked that they be removed. I'll close by saying this, if it offends a n****r for me to call him one, then it offends me twice as much to see him wearing his pants hanging down below his ass. So, I'll make a deal with him....dress properly and act properly, and I'll respect you properly.

I avoid using the word. I am not sensitive at all, but try to respect that others are. I spent 20 years in the armed forces. I worked side by side with a lot of black people. Many of them very good people. I had frank discussions with them about that word and came to respect how it was offensive to them within certain contexts.

Flew with some misfits in 'Nam who used the call sign "Killer Spade". SOP for such was a numerical designation on the end which indicated whether you were rank and file or part of the hierarchy. "6" was the troop CO, and so forth. There was a black pilot that got into the spirit of affairs and called himself "Killer Spade" w/o numerical footnote. He were too.

And he could drink and sing with the best of us.

Young black people have endeared the N word and use it constantly , there is only a problem if white people use it. now tell me who are the racists ?
Posted By: joken2 Re: The N word - 02/11/17

When you start talking letters of the alphabet used instead of the full ethnic/racial slurs, it pretty much covers the whole alphabet.

Posted By: rockinbbar Re: The N word - 02/11/17
Being German doesn't make you a "Nazi" anymore than being black makes you a "N"....

It's what you are inside that bears those monikers.

Daughter in law is of Wendish descent on her dad's side of family. Now there is a minority for you! They are almost extinct back in Europe.

Rost495 knows what I'm talking about. The little Wendish community is right between us both over in southern Lee county at Serbin.

Good Post I am not sensative either but it just makes sense to avoid certian things. I think it shows respect for a group but just like people of all races and colors can be jerks no reason to disrespect an whole group of anykind

Would you use the word when you talk to Ben Carson? Probably not

I don't see any bold talk from anybody, you need to point it out for us. While you're at it identify the 74 year old guys in wheelchairs.

I don't use such words in general, am rather specific in their application.

Kills me, how grown men get all upset about the N word, when they are felons, have kids out of wedlock, and glorify violence.

Evidently some black skin is really thin.

Grew up with a bunch of inner city kids bused into my school. Same crap of today, was around then.....fighting/breeding.......acting like wild dogs.
Was enough to get one's attention, seeing how some folks "lived". Now that kind of crap doesn't even cause a fellow student to bat an eye......and it no longer is just "those people".

Thank goodness for school vouchers, get your kids into a school away from the general public thugs.
Posted By: hookeye Re: The N word - 02/11/17
Demand less, get less.
Public school system, society in general......popular black culture is a poison.
Posted By: pahick Re: The N word - 02/11/17
I dont use the term around black people, unless they cut me off in traffic, or speak ebonics....lol. I just thought it was hypocritical when these folks told me they never said the word. BS.
Posted By: hookeye Re: The N word - 02/11/17
FWIW, in more than one place I've been, blacks are referred to as "Canadians".

Outsider, I picked up on a couple guys using the word and smiled......they were shocked I knew about it, not being from the region.
Posted By: hookeye Re: The N word - 02/11/17
IMHO such slurs don't apply to decent folks.
Good people are good people.
Bad ones? They have fun words to identify them by various characteristics.

I grew up with a Nig that was the best shot with a nig shooter than I've ever seen! A bird within 20 yards on the wing was just a dead sumbeech! That nig could shoot a nig shooter! He was riding behind me one day on my horse when I jumped a big ditch of water...girt broke and off we went...deep water. I was going under the third time when he grabbed me by the hair and pulled me out! I owe my life to that Nig and I'd kiss his black ass today if he wasn't already dead!!

My 85yo Mom called me from the grocery store yesterday and was all upset. She had lost her wallet and wanted me to look for it. The cashier had already rang her up so she was hanging out near the cash registers. I couldn't find her wallet and we thought maybe it had been stolen. I told her to sit tight and I'd come and pay for her groceries and then we'd figure out where the wallet was.

When I got there she had just found it, it was in the bottom of her pocketbook the whole time and she was flustered. When we got home I was very shocked when she quoted an old friend of hers from work. She said"Fred used to say all the time that I could f^%k up a one car n&^gg#r funeral". My being shocked turned to laughter pretty quick, and I even asked her to repeat it. smile

Wow, my last name is pure German, no mistake about it!

I have a large % of German heritage from both parents, mixed with Irish, British, and Cherokee.

I was never aware of any anti-German sentements in this nation, following Hitler's death. Lots of anti Nazi feelings, yes.

Dating back to the sixties, when we used to live for the next episode of 12:00 High or Combat, it was all about Nazis, never about Germans.

The hatred of those "Dirty Japs" was, on the other hand, pervasive and potent in the people I knew and the liturature I read up into the eighties. Judo or Karate techniques used in fighting were often referenced as dirty jap tricks.

As to to subject of the OP,
In 1982 I purchased a beautiful black quarter hose mare and brought her home to the famiky farm. I called her Sheena for her shiny coat. My mother, to this day, still refers to that horse as Jig-a-boo.
