Relax, compared to the money spent for the high-speed train, for which not a foot of track has been laid, it's peanuts.
A little over 45,000 a tortoise.
hahahah
But not a dime for illegal alien relocation.

California is racist.
Born and raised in Calif! Soon to be outta here. Freaking nuts. mad
Anyway, of all the crazy things that this state takes my tax payer dollars and wastes them on crazy $hit; this is not the worst and far from the most useless!
Would rather spend them on the tortoises than pay for legal defense for an illegal aliens deportation. Bullet train.. get from nowhere to nowhere fast. LOL whistle Bet there are a bunch of crooked politicians and cronies that own worthless land that will be worth a bundle, selling for the right-of-way.
Gotta quit now cannot get started. crazy Leaving this crappy state be the end of the year.... Leaving this socialist place and moving to America. laugh
And CA shows us by example of what is wrong with things out there. A real shame as CA is a beautiful and wonderful state but has become inhabited and managed by those who still believe there's an endless supply of money.
no money for important things, but millions for illegal aliens and tortoises.

This!
I didn't read the story. I find it odd that I'm suppose to get Fish & Wildlife Dept. News, but this has not shown up. Sounds like a federal program. The sad thing is, these things have been tried in the past and all of them have fallen far short of their goals.
I'm not taking about reintroduction efforts for things like bighorn sheep. Most of those have gone well. But the ones that I'm familar with were all done by the state with the help of local volunteers/groups.
When the state tries to "save" populations they get into trouble. The fed is even worse.
I remember when the state tried to save the starving deer on Angle Island. They got transported to areas open to hunting. The anti hunter crowds hated that. But the parks and areas closed to hunting were simply too crowded already to take any more competition.
After two years in their new homes, all of those deer were dead as far as could be determined. Not one was killed by a hunter. Preadators got them. They didn't know how to deal with them, so they died.
I hunt in an area considered to be fair or better Desert Tortise Habitat. I've found the remains of dozens of them. But I've only seen one live one. About 90% of which were not killed by predators like the Golden Eagle. BTW, I have yet to find one that had been run over by an ATV or a 4WD. The locals I know haven't found any run over Tortises either. When challenged by the locals, the federal people who made this claim, couldn't produce any examples either.
Nice. Welcome to another version of wildlife management by policical correctness. E
I recall 30 or 40 years ago they had built platforms in the eastern Mojave to poison to the ravens that were decimating the baby tortoises, and the greenies took it to court to protect the ravens and won.

Never understood the logic of saving ravens over tortoises.

Wonder how important it would be to them, if they were spending their own money?

I should say important to the ones awarded or just given the contract to move the tortises.

^ ^ ^ ^ this^ ^ ^ ^

this is the same california with the urgent budget crisis, right ?
Keep feeding them your taxes. That will really show them.
Every time I see a California politician speak about environmental issues, my first thought is "How much better would the environment be, if you didn't have several million illegal aliens running around your state, driving cars/requiring housing/watering lawns/consuming natural resources???".
Not California... there's only two cases to where tortoises are being relocated, one is on a couple parcels that the state has granted in the desert for the building of solar power plants, in which case the energy company's are paying for, the other is where the Army and Federal Government are moving them to expand military bases at Fort Irwin and 29 Palms. All of which has been in the works for at least a decade!

Phil
Damn. That's gonna take away from their golf course money.
