At the height of the war in Iraq were avg 100 Kia a month. I still remember my wife looking at the Army times they had a page showing the Soldiers, marines killed in Iraq for the month. She said they are just babies 18-19 yr old kids. Most Americans adults will never get it/understand..

was at Arlington this morning, at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Never fails that it rains out of my eyes while I'm there.

A bit later, waiting for a trolley, I spot a name on a small, standard-sized headstone about 40 feet behind me - a very familiar name; Fletcher. Frank Fletcher - Admiral Frank Fletcher. Medal-of-Honor winner and Task Force Commander during WWII. Read about him often. One helluva man - and the MOH was well-deserved.

The main ride starts tomorrow for D.C., rain or shine, with Rolling Thunder. I head for Patriot HD by 6:am, then police escorted to the Pentagon lots before the actual route begins.

So true. before OEF/OIF, Memorial day was the start of summer to me, now, with so many friends having paid the ultimate sacrifice over there, it's a very sober day for me. This Memorial day I'm going to a ceremony down in Fountain where the mother of one of my former Soldiers is laying a wreath at the memorial there.

We had a neighbor who was a county sheriff's deputy. Retired from the Army and the National Guard. He was killed by a damned drunk driver. Every year on Memorial Day, his friends in uniform show up at midnight and stand guard on a flag lowered to half staff at the head of his widow's driveway. All the men are in their dress uniforms and take their turn guarding the flag. His widow never remarried. These fine men have raised her two boys since this tragic disaster. The boys will never need for a single penny for college expenses. These guys do fund raisers every year and it's all covered.

Our neighbors bring them meals, coffee and water while they stand watch. We have a sign up sheet for time periods to provide food and beverage for them. I will be heading over there at 2 a.m. to take my turn, and I won't be alone. We just can't let these guys down. They will take their shifts guarding that flag for 24 hours. They do it every year. This happened over 10 years ago and it still continues today. We are proud to do our little part by feeding these fine men. Some of them are retired now, but they still show up and take their turns. He had a lot of friends and was highly thought of.

When I hear these worthless slugs complaining about how horrible cops are, I'd like to have them come visit these guys on Memorial Day.
