If my dog is the one getting chomped, I say hell yeah! Although in such a public place I would be inclined to try and beat the offending pooch about the head until it gave up.

Dog shot dead after attacking smaller dog at I-93 rest area

HOOKSETT — State police are investigating whether a man walking his dog was guilty of reckless conduct when he shot to death another dog in the parking lot of the Hooksett Welcome Center Wednesday afternoon.

The man told police his leashed dog was attacked by a larger dog that jumped out the window of a parked vehicle at the rest area.

“We are investigating this as a reckless conduct situation even though at this point in time it appears as though the shot and firing of the weapon was justified,” state police Sgt. Charles Johnston said.

Witnesses told police that they tried to separate the two dogs, but to no avail.

“The owner of the smaller animal that was being injured by the larger one pulled out his legally owned and carried firearm and shot and killed the larger animal,” Johnston said.

The larger dog was killed with a single shot. Johnston said the owner of the smaller dog told police he had tried several times to get the larger animal’s jaws off his dog.

The smaller dog was injured, but was expected to survive. It was taken to an area veterinarian for treatment, Johnston said.

The report of the shooting first came in at 1:10 p.m. By the time state police arrived, the bigger dog was dead. Officers helped place the dog’s body into its owner’s Dodge Durango, which had Rhode Island plates.

State Police would not identify the man who shot the dog, saying they continue to investigate.

“We’re still investigating the circumstances of the incident because a firearm was discharged in a public place,” Johnston said.

Anyone who saw the incident or has information that could help authorities is asked to contact Trooper Mike Barrett at 271-3636.

justified in my mind, if you're just gonna stand by and watch your dog get eaten alive you shouldn't have a dog. By the same token, if you have a gun and aren't going to use it to protect your property or your loved ones, you probably shouldn't have a gun either.

guy tried to separate them first, only logical conclusion, from my perspective

Justified 100%.

Justified and legal sometimes can be two different things...

A man that won't defend his own dog isn't worth much. No matter the consequences.

I'd bet it'll be clean.........NHSP going through the motions to ensure the dead dog's owner has no valid reason to bitch.

Fine, that it's being questioned is what bothers me. Were it my dog doing the attacking and the other guy didn't shoot it before I got there, I'd shoot it.

I love my dogs, but the first time they bite me or another that ain't attacking me, I'll be the first to put a bullet in the dog.

JUSTIFIED IMHO, I would do so.

My Uncle stabbed a pit several times to get it to release his Britney he was walking. Brit survived pit had to be put down because of the massive injuries sustained. Dumbass pit owners were Bay Area Libfreaks who had been warned about their dogs aggressive behavior from other neighbors in the mountain community.

Absolutely justified.

An impartial investigation is the correct procedure, claims and any counters claims
by parties can be fraught with exaggeration and error.

Please do expand on that.

I know some people who turned their farm into a place that sold produce, had a petting zoo, corn maze, and food and entertainment. They said that they learned one thing very quickly......do not let people bring their dogs there, unless it was a service animal. I love dogs, but I do not put them on the same level as I do humans. I don't keep them in the house, I don't travel with them (although I had a couple of labs that loved to ride in the back of the truck, but that was restricted to on the farm), they are outside animals who's sole purpose in life is to keep unwanted critters run away from my farm. They aren't placed in situations where something like this could happen. But, I sure wouldn't sit by and let another dog chew them up.

I'd imagine you might have some knowledge about such things.

People have different levels of what a pet means to them. Or any animal under their care.

Some people starve and abuse their pets and animals.

I personally would protect any animal under my care from attack. Whether it's a coyote killing a calf, or another dog killing my dog. Or someone attacking my family.

Do not know the laws in that state but I believe it is justified 100%.

A justified shooting is a justified shooting whether it's a two or four-legged animal. Given the proximate location of NH to the surrounding enemy-infested territory of northeast socialist schittholes, I suspect the Propaganda Corps is making more of this than the NHSP are.

Dogs chewing on people seems to be more acceptable than dogs chewing on each other.

I don't have a problem with shooting a dog, as long as the standard is applied across the board.
