Yes I called, did it do any good? who knows.
Guess I'm ignorant? Whats the problem?
I see the flags at half mast everywhere here?

Presidential Proclamation Honoring the Victims of the Tragedy in Las Vegas, Nevada

HONORING THE VICTIMS OF THE TRAGEDY IN LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

– – – – – – –

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

Our Nation is heartbroken. We mourn with all whose loved ones were murdered and injured in last night’s horrible tragedy in Las Vegas, Nevada. As we grieve, we pray that God may provide comfort and relief to all those suffering.

As a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless act of violence perpetrated on October 1, 2017, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, October 6, 2017. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this second day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand seventeen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fo
Did they fly it too low or too high?

I was taught as a Cub Scout that even though they call it Half Mast, it should be flown at about 2/3 mast. Is that correct?
They're just trying to show respect for the victims. Are you saying, in general, you don't like this tradition and think the flag should always be all the way up? Just a piece of trivia, "half staff" is for flags flown on land. "Half mast" is for flags on ships. Although, 90% of people use the terms interchangeably.
Actually, I think the correct term is half staff.

Well now, you learn something new every day. I never knew that, thank you.

I think the tradition is fine and warranted when it is proper, I fly the flag at half staff when proper not in a knee jerk emotionally crippled fashion.

Read the Proclamation issued by the President.
Yes
I think when the President makes this kind of order, he's directing federal agencies. Citizens should be able to do whatever the hell they want. It's up to them to decide if they think the gesture is appropriate.

I agree. The president has no control over what I do and if I want to lower the flag, I'll do so.
I did read it. The president ordered the flags for all federal facilities flown at half mast. Why would private companies not follow and honor the federal declaration? I’d be pissed if all the public facilities flew the flag in accordance with the declaration but private companies ignored it. Are you suggesting that privately owned and flown flags shouldn’t follow the presidents orders? Should “private” flags be subject to different protocols?

If they fly it according to presidential declarations they get excoriated, if they fly it according to their own wishes and ignore the president they’d be labeled anti-American, never Trumpers.

I’m having a hard time being righteously indignant over a private company following presidential flag etiquette. Seems there’s a lot to be pissed about in today’s day and age but I’m not sure this is it. In any case Paul I hope that your upcoming weekend is enjoyable now that fall is here and you get some outdoor time in. 👍
There is no breech of etiquette here.

Good for Home Depot.
I'm diggin' the moral outrage though. smile

Iowa's governor signed an order ordering all state entities and requesting all citizens fly at half staff.

Home depot is not Any of these, "the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, October 6, 2017. To many have fallen in defense of one of the greatest symbols of mankind, it's a shame it gets the lack of respect it gets.

Fly it right or don't fly it.

The Governor has that right, Home Depot in Iowa is off the hook and all flags in the state should be at half staff.
So this Sunday the NFL will half kneel..?
I always thought if you fly a flag the proper thing was to fly it along with these type orders....

Correct - not sure why anyone would be upset about this. Seems trivial and lame.
Would you be offended if I asked what a paradiddle is?

Cool
Years ago, a young man from our small town was killed flying as an Air Force Major with the Thunderbird team. He was killed off the coast of England when the two jets failed to turn straight up.

His family flew the Flag at half mask/staff, for a week or so. I saw no disrespect with that. I should have done the same with our flag.

Of course.

You can even kneel and sing the national anthem if you way also

Flags are flown on staffs not masts. Ships have masts and flags are never flown on masts.

Just so you folks will know.

I would support the family in this as well, 5 star parents are precious, although still wrong it would not be right to argue it with them.
I think some folks need to take a gander at the Flag Code.

It is not uncommon for private entities to follow the lead of governors and presidents.

It is also not uncommon for companies to use the flag in their advertising, and on clothing, doesn't make it right.

I wonder what the big uproar about the NFL is.......

Disrespect is disrespect whether intentional or not, when it is intentional it should be fought, when it is unintentional it should be corrected.

Colloquially, for me, 'half mast' was taught.

Ok.

Show me where the Flag Code states a non-government entity can't fly the flag half staff.

So am I to understand you're having issues with it being at "half-staff"? You're a bit young to be afflicted, but they say it happens to everyone sooner or later. Don't get down on yourself.

Ask your Dr. for some Cialis samples. They tell me you get a few days out of it and it doesn't give you the headache that Viagra does. You'll be back in the saddle pounding nails in no time.

Just trying to help a brother out with better living through chemistry. whistle

I am curious too. Does not match my understanding or experience on a broad range of boats and ships I have been on.

I do use a flagpole though. wink

I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that I have a problem with it.

Unless of course you're from Wisconsin.

Don't ships have something called a "Jack Staff" to fly the flag from, or is that an outdated term?
