Owen got this nice mulie buck this morning. He and his dad scouted hard yesterday for Owen's opener and found where they were transitioning from the Smith Valley ranches up into the Pine Nut Mountains to bed down during the day. That's the secret of hunting this area.

He knocked it DRT at 175 yards with a 150gr Nosler Partition over 52gr IMR 4350 from his great older Husqvarna FN 98 270 Win with a 3-9X40 Leupold VXII. It's the same rifle his dad used in late August for his first ever antelope. I installed a Timney FW trigger that I had recently acquired from John Barsness, which helped make this rifle an honest "one-holer".

WTG Owen......that's a dandy....
That's great! Thanks for sharing.
Nothing better than several generations coming together and sharing in the things that makes life worth living. I don’t think there’s a greater pride that can be felt than having a youngster succeed in the endeavors that we love. Congratulations to all of you!
Congratulations, I know he's proud. Good shooting. Making memories.

Joe
That’s fantastic, congratulations all around!
Awesome job there!
Nice job Owen! Listen to your grandpa, he's a smart guy!
The things I am proudest about are that he hunts hard and is an ethical hunter. He won't take marginal shots. He saw this deer three times, twice running close by, but he waited until he had a good shot at it when it stopped.

It was a one-shot hunt. wink
Most excellent!
Very nice!! Congrats and thanks for sharing
Awesome!
Atta Boy, Owen.

Third deer. He's 14 now and been deer hunting since 12, the age he needs to be in NV to hunt big game.

This was his first deer at age 12. Pretty happy kid.

Which one? Both kids look pretty happy there. 😉

Darned right I was happy.

It was only 400 yards to the road and all downhill. laugh
Bruce--the latest buck looks like it has whitetail antlers. Any chance of a cross-bred?
The lad has done good, congrats.

Bob,

That was what Owen said about the antlers. We have no whitetail in NV at all. This area isn't even close to anywhere that has them. He took this particular deer because the antlers were unusual for here. You have a sharp eye, Bob.
Good for him---I like a different looking bucks also.

I just finished a Flaig’s Custom in 30-06. The gun has all the modifications done to it. A timey trigger set, Leopold scope one piece base and 3 x 9 VX3 and scope safety. Pillar mount and Acuglass bedding. The stock is a 3/4 burl with a framed Monti Carlo style stock with arrow checkering. I put a on Pachmayr decelerator but pad from a trap gun because the stock was cut short for a youth. I quit counting the cost long ago. I would say follow your hart. You'll have a nice gun when you’re finished. Almost all gunsmiths were trained on Mauser sporters. You will have no problem investing in your project.

Outstanding!
