This is cilantro.
This is fish taco.
This is not open for debate.
Good day.
Damn!
Bringing the fight to fire today!
You really should give that habanero sour cream tartar sauce a try.
Dave, I love ya like a brother, (or at least like a brother in law), but you need professional help. 😜
Don't call it cilantro, call it Chinese parsley. Makes all of th difference in the world.
Even a rabbit won't eat cilantro. Fish tacos......I haven't been that hungry yet.
My last experience was years ago, in Mexico City. Very careful about what I ate. Was with a co-worker who had lived there and managed our office for a number of years. We ate every meal together, and he helped me avoid things that might be a problem. Lunch the last day before going home, we had a meal with cilantro and lemonade. I think it was the ice cubes. I was up all night with the revenge. Excruciating flight home the next day, but I set the record for fat guys dash to the restroom at Ohare. The thought of cilantro just about brings about a repeat.

Cilantro had nothing to do with that
I always thought cilanto tasted like Dawn dish washing liquid.
But I still enjoy it. For some reason
I've had fancy salads that on occasion have tasted like dawn dish soap.
After trying cilantro on it's own, the soap salads now make sense.
Dos Babacoa con Frijoles Refritos y Cilantro Tacos, por favor, oh, y limon!

To many people, cilantro does indeed taste like soap. Claudia and I are two. I know others like it, but it's just plain BAD to those of us with that gene, or that enzyme, or whatever the heck it is.
Fish tacos, on the other hand, are wonderful - without the cilantro! We had walleye tacos just last week here at Casa Raab. I'd bet that most of the yellow perch caught around here turn into tacos without delay.

Damn, that’s desperate for a drink! Cleans you right out, I bet?
Love fish tacos and cilantro
I don't get the soap taste thing at all but then again I'm a gourmet with a sophisticated taste pallet
Maybe your bait is making your fish taste like soap?
It would be hard to find hot sauce made without cilantro but never had a fish taco. Sounds sort of like a stool softener.
Carne guisada is pretty good though.

Hey, look. Dave is not dead.
I guess I like cilantro? Probably have eaten some.
Wife hates it and can tell if a dish has cilantro in it from 80 rods away.
It is good to see you again here on the freak show Dave, I guess?
And Dave I'd say that soap in your 1st post is Irish Spring
And Dave I'd say that soap in your 1st post is Irish Spring
Bingo!
From those corny old tv commercials!
I never "got" tacos, burrito yes.But before fish tacos....we'd just throw fried fish, some hot sauce on a cpl slices of bread and race each other to the next sammich?
Fish tacos with cilantro are about as appetizing as a mule scrotum pizza pocket topped with phromunda cheese. CILANTRO IS NOT FOOD. A hillbilly and a asian guy cant be wrong.

i'll disagree, but i'm from south texas.

It must be a long winter up there!
The best thing that could happen to cilantro would be Roundup herbicide.
Mike

I’ve about had it with these culinary call-out threads.

Troy, you made me blow popcorn across the room. Now I gotta clean it up.
I know several people who cannot stand cilantro and can taste the barest hint of it in their food. Me, I had never eaten it until I moved to Texas and it's become a staple around my house. Can't make pico de gallo nor tacos without it.
I feel sorry for you, Troy, but I do envy your imaginative vocabulary!
Ed
I, for one, have never hear of the herb, it is a herb? Perhaps, I have lead a sheltered life?
i can hogg out on good fish tacos. light on the cilantro for me though, but i do like it.
i miss good tex mex. maybe i'll get some good cal mex next week.
Thanks for clearing that up for me. I was thinking it was more of your steelhead art.
the real question is, do either cilantro or fish tacos cause monkey butt?
I’m busy trying to put Roy’s face on a cake.

Just remember the taco truck rule is like diners.
If you have more than one choice, get in the longest line.
Al pastor and linguia are not to be passed. Tripas if you want some real tacos.
Where are you going to be?
Mmmmm. Tacos. Choppped seasoned steak, Chopped cilantro and raw white onion. A splash of a citrus hot sauce. Tasty.
Yeah. That Pica dilly sauce.
Thats where I have eaten cilantro.
Richard, cilantro is also called coriander.....I think.
Maybe you have been around coriander?

Whatever it is, it tastes like battery acid and Bermuda grass fuuuking in my mouth.

Yup, same plant, different name.

Dave, you need to step away from the paint gun and drag the Ice Palace out to the lake for some, Therapy!!

Richard, it becomes ever more evident that these Philistines neither understand nor appreciate the delicate sophistication of the Iowa palate.

The rabbits around here won’t eat fish tacos either lol
There is no better genre of food than Mexican, and within such, a proper Fish Taco is very, very hard to beat. And yes, Cilantro on all the things.
Si !!! Pacifica, por favor!

Ask Julia Child what she thinks of cilantro.
It's genetic, a small percentage of us taste cilantro very differently than others.
I'm asked if I think a very small amount in a food dish would be ok? I would be just as willing to apply a few drops of dawn dish soap in my food and hope to make it through the experience.
After some side discussions on these two "food products", I've decided to clear things up.

Cilantro is skookum!
Gary Busey is playing the part of Dorothy AND the Cowardly Lion, so I call fowl ( pun intended) on the fish taco thing too...
I hear they are OK if made out of walleyes...

I'm with ya on all that...
Cilantro does not taste like Irish Spring. There's no minty freshness. It's exactly like Ivory bar soap, though. It even floats...
I wonder if the gene that makes cilantro taste like soap is the same one that makes asparagus pee so foul?
I think asparagus pee is a thing for everyone.
The cilantro thing I just discovered this week though. I have had many meals in my life where I tasted soap in the food and I've wondered wtf is so hard about rinsing pots and pans, dishes and cooking utensils?
I now understand that bits of cilantro were to blame. I'm thankful that I now know and I will be avoiding anything that has cilantro in it.

Wouldn't it be Cilantro AND the Fish Taco's? I'm thinking they were around here last week. Everyone said they smelled like soap.

Actually it’s not the cilantro/coriander that’s the culprit but 4 specific genes that affected the development of your sense of taste. The chemical compounds in cilantro/coriander are present in multiple other herbs and food products.
Cilantro are the leaves of the Coriander Plant known also as Chinese Parsley. In cooking coriander refers to the seeds of that plant.
Are there dry spices made from the coriander seeds? I'd be interested in trying that as well. I tried biting the tiniest tip of a cilantro leaf with my teeth last night, so tiny, like a flek of pepper. It was instant dawn dish soap and I was like "nope, nope, nope..."
OR6A2 is the gene, as I understand from an article I've read.

Beer is not distilled.
As to the piss tank, it must have outlets labeled Coors light, Bud light, Keystone, Natty, Hamms, Busch light, ....
Chinese parsley is NOT cilantro. They look similar, but taste very different. It is not uncommon for parsley, Chinese parsley, and cilantro to be available here at the same time.

Asparagus pee and is from a mercaptan. Mercaptans are put in Natural Gas as an odorant so we can smell leaks.
They also give skunk essence its particular je ne sais quoi.

wrong use of words on my part as to distilled, thinking of their abuse of the cactus plant, as to the beer i think it said tecate.

Although I like cilantro in my salsa, I can sympathize with anyone who says it tastes like soap to them. I have a few of those things going on...for instance, blueberries in pie taste faintly like peat to me, but enough to not enjoy it. Diesel jas on odor that resembles the taste of carrots. And tje smell of skunk doesn't bother me much. I've often wondered if I am unique in those regards.
Now, I grew up on the banks of the Rio Grande and have eaten the authentic Mexican food of many cooks, so I consider myself a credible judge of Mexican cuisine...and as far as I'm concerned, if it has fish in it then it AIN'T a taco!

8 pages of stupid.
I've still got it.
Love cilantro grew up eating it in many dishes (SA,TX). Also like the seeds and ground seeds. I remember a candy treat made from sugar coated coriander seeds. They looked kind of bumpy with a coriander seed in the middle and very hard. Been many decades since I had any. I didn't have fish tacos growing up, never even heard of them, but was introduced to them when living in San Diego, have been making them ever since. Here in CO the wife likes to make them from tilapia, cod, yellow perch, walleye, sunfish and catfish grilled with green chilies. Cilantro on the side because she and my younger son must have THE gene. Tacos and Modelo Negro for me.

I just did a 23andme genetic dealy and one of the funny genetic identifiers on there was whether you carry a gene that makes you think cilantro tastes like soap. Guessing some of you have it. I don't

i could make a crack about that last paragraph, but i won't.
i always thought mexican food was the sonoran version around here i grew up with. Until i got edducatted, and bought a cookbook showing the various regions in mexico and the totally different cooking styles.
my first experience was in san diego probably 30 years ago eating some mexican stuff popular along the coast of mexico, such as shrimp tacos, fish tacos, and so on. The cheese used was not the cheddar typically used around here, but a white cheese, and the cooking was much milder than here. As far as texas, they eat those horrible mashed black beans there that look like they came out of a babies diaper. Everybody knows it's pintos where it's at.
as far as mexican beer is concerned, there is a reason the illegals drink bud lite.

never had black beans but pintos are a staple around here.
I think Ron may be referring to refried beans. Real refrieds are made with pinto beans. Some places serve black beans with a "Mexican" meal...I think it's a perversion. Yuppie Mexican food has spread all over the nation and many people have no idea what the real thing is. Tacos are not made with soft flour tortialls, and gorditas ain't nuthin like what Taco Bell tries to sell you as a gordita.

I did not realize so many places have these confused... Chinese parsley is not the same plant, but rather a cultivar of a celery which is different from the usual celery you will find in your local grocery. Based on the number of totally wrong websites it is easy to see how someone could mix up reality...

Diet soda, on the other hand, tastes like hair spray and I'll never develop a taste for that!
I'm with you on the cilantro, it ruins a good salad or damn near anything else for me.
Fish tacos though? are you fing loco? That's good eats buddy, best ones I've had were in PV. But even the halibut tacos next door are pretty danged good.
He's in Minnesota, odds are he's never had a real taco meat or fish
I guess I'm fortunate that cilantro tastes like cilantro to me, good stuff on mexican and thai dishes. Not a big fan of regular parsley strangely enough.

Nothin' wrong with that...
But seriously, one of my grandfathers - a full fledged Norwegian - would wrap cold lutefisk in lefse and gobble it down.. I don't like it cold - but
prepared correctly, that's some good chit... Unfortunately - it's gotten to the price per pound equaling lobster... Total BS...
I love shrimp 🌮 tacos!!!!!
