it looked like a good plan at the very beginning. but it did turn out to have a few fatal flaws in it.

Trust, me, there are plenty of good ole American rednecks that are capable of, and do, bury trackhoes and dozers. Watched one sink one while excavating a fish pond. Tell you what. It takes some doing to pull a 65,000 lb excavator when it's buried to mid cab in a wet clay pit.

I think if their goal was to sink it that far from shore, they would have had no chance. In this case being tentatively stupid probably turned out way worse than just going all-in stupid.

If you're going to attempt something that stupid, ground the nose of the barge on land, use the weight and tracking [pulling] motion of the trackhoe climbing aboard to keep grounded and pulled towards the shore, turn a 180 and use the hoe to push the loaded barge off the bank.

When he was half way he should have spun 180 and pushed the bucket down in the dirt and leveled out the barge, then walked it on while extending the stick. Iam sure its a little more tricky than side loading on a lowbed.
