I wanted to toss the idea of a new forum that deals with home, cabin, and land ownership. It would be a forum where people can go to ask questions about anything from electrical to structural to building to land issues. Post your thoughts or a simple yay or nay, if we get a fair amount of people that like the idea Ric said he would hook us up.
I'd like a forum like that.
I wish I knew how to build stuff.
I'd like that, I have an off grid cabin and am always looking for others to bounce ideas off of.
Sounds like a great idea!
I wish I knew how to build stuff.
Which is exactly why I thought about Ric creating this forum.
I would be a regular. Great idea.
Jim, if it is wood working you talk about, it can mean a whole other bunch of tools!!
I'm IN!
I'd LOVE to build a small one room "man cave" cabin on my property.
Virgil B.
The Hunters Campfire could be a great place for it if we had a Religion/Politics/Other Nuttery forum.
Rural living?
Good idea, I can watch or read about other people working any time.

I built one house, slab, frame, plumbing, electrical, tile, paint, everything except finish concrete and brick the thing. I never want to do that again.
This would be an interesting forum.
I am in
Have remodeled a couple houses, built some outbuildings
This could be a good thread
Ric was skeptical we could generate enough interest but so far it's looking pretty good.
I'm on board. We might just learn a thing, or two.
I'd like that, I have an off grid cabin and am always looking for others to bounce ideas off of.
Ditto
I did designs for everything from residences to commercial offices to large warehousing to bulk material handling and storage for over 43 years, the last 12 1/2 was as owner of my own design firm. Closed the doors at the end of 2017, didn't really want to do it anymore. BUT, I have always been involved, one way or another, in some aspect of the construction industry and like to keep up with what is going on and what folks are doing . . . I always have an opinion, too
.
Long way around the bush . . . I vote "YAY".
as long as nobody says nothing bad about log cabins, i'm in.
Could have stuff like this in it.
https://cabinporn.com/
I'm interested. I usually pick up good ideas from cabin threads.
I built a log cabin in '92
just with the wrong woman........
Sounds like an interesting topic but my place is gtg. Don't see no need ta gettin all stuffy about the dwellin place.

no.......not this one

I'd vote "yes".
BTW, love the Savage 99 SBR.
Yay and include outdoor buildings.
Good idea. Love construction far more than my body does. ;-{>8
For most of my life I dreamed of building my own house. Three years ago I finally did it. I did everything except the foundation and drywall.
It was extremely rewarding and a ton of work and I am glad I did it. I think this new forum is a fine idea.
What do ya think of my handy work?
Just kidding, here is the real deal.......
Looks like there would be more interest in it than there is in the Australia forum that so many clamored for.
Great idea! Iโd be a regular
I wish I knew how to build stuff.
Same here. I can do very basic things, but when it comes to planning, design and more advanced measuring, cutting and fitting, I'm in over my head.
I'd be okay with that except that leaning chimney has got to go.
I'd love to see it. I've built 3 myself and would love to see what others have done.
The Hunters Campfire could be a great place for it if we had a Religion/Politics/Other Nuttery forum.
Rural living?
I like the "rural living" title better. Growing crops/gardens and raising livestock topics could be discussed there also?
I've seen irfubar's place (from the outside only as he would not allow me inside any of the buildings) and it's beautiful.
Maybe.
He also an ass hole.
I'm in. My family is in the process of securing a long-term lease and remodeling my grandparent's house on Portsmouth Island, NC. Here is a link to a National Parks Service report on the specific house I'm talking about:

That forum already exists. Look under "Miscellaneous".

Fetilizer shed ..
I'm looking for land right now to build a small cabin on - nothing fancy - just basic living place .
Yea .
Just found this one . . . Needs some refreshing but should be finished by the time I'm 75.
I would be checking it out regular.
count my vote for yes please.
Sounds great.
I'm in the process of buying a "fixer upper" cabin and it needs a lot of fixen
Alright then, I sent Ric the link to this thread so the ball is in his court, we shall what he says.
This was the inspiration for this new forum, it was built in March of this year.
Nice! Hunting/getaway cabin?
It's ironic, I've drawn cabin designs since I was around 10 years old... at age 57, I still toy with them. However, I've never actually built one for myself, but those cabin dreams are what charted my course to become general contractor. Essentially, I just build bigger, fancier cabins...
How much ya got in that thing, Ak?

https://irma.nps.gov/DataStore/DownloadFile/549403Sure would have like to stood on that porch on a January morning in 1920 an watched the ducks fly bet it would been a sight to behold!!!!
That is our getaway cabin, it's in prime sledding and atving country and even though there are moose and bears in the area, there is too much hunting pressure for my tastes. It's really peaceful out there and I could sit on the deck and enjoy the view for days. We designed the cabin but had a well known builder build it for us. He put up the shell and I am currently doing the wiring and insulation on the weekends so it's a slow process but it'll get there.
How much ya got in that thing, Ak?
For the land, cabin, outhouse and the shop my neighbor and I built we have about $75k in it, I'm figuring another $10-$15k should wrap it all up.
Thanks for bumping rooster.
Be a great forum. I'm in.
Maybe.
He also an ass hole.
After you sold me that fake map to Shrapnels dogtown you aren't even allowed in this part of the state!!!
I'd like to see this forum. As soon as I figure out the new way to post pictures I'd like to contribute.
There are a lot of issues with a place not heated most of the time. Freezable drain traps are but one. Any water lines have to be drained, or better, blown out with air.
Off grid would be something else, depending how basic you like it.
There are a few mostly dead forums that could be 86'd to make room.
I'd certainly enjoy it. Some very talented tradesmen on the 'Fire.
Is that a Montana Mobile Cabins build?
I really like their stuff.
I have seen cabins that can be delivered to your location.

I really like their stuff.
Nice eye! Yep, Montana Mobile Cabins built (and delivered) my cabin. They're a local place sorta between Bozeman and Butte, nicest people around and they do great work. I don't even remember how I found them, but after I bought some land I stopped by their construction yard and talked to the owners (Kip and Dawndi) and walked through a few cabins they were building. It took all of about 30 seconds to place an order that was built over the next 9 months. They've been amazing throughout, and after there was a wildfire that came to about 100 yards from the cabin last year, they were the first to let me know about it (I wasn't in Montana at the time) and then they came out to inspect the cabin for any heat damage and did some repairs on chinking that was damaged.
Congratulations...that's nice.
I daydream about one of their cabins a lot.
I read through all 10 pages so far. Looks very interesting. Bring it on Ric!
That just set the bar...Really high! ๐

Iโd invite you in but Dave and Clark would have stay outside...๐
That just set the bar...Really high! ๐
It might be more of a definition problem. That is stretching my concept of a cabin. It is very nice, though!

First off, thank you for the kind words. I agree it is more of a house than a cabin, but the thread title was house & cabins.
I like the spirit of this thread and would be happy to answer any questions from others about doing it yourself, things to avoid, things I would do different etc....
It is a very rewarding endeavor and I would highly recommend building your dream home/cabin.
Who doesn't dream about a cabin in the woods? I recommend a website called "cabin porn" good way to kill some time and dream.
Oh and one other thing DO NOT let Flave in your cabin! you will have to burn the pillows afterwards.........
I will bend your ear a time or two in the near future. If this thread gets legs and Rick makes it a subsection, I will post questions at you about structure ideas...If not, I will just send you PMโs for your thoughts and ideas. Thanks for your willingness to help all with questions...Mark ๐

It is a camping forum by title.
But still....... NO CAMPING FORUM!!!!
Oh and one other thing DO NOT let Flave in your cabin! you will have to burn the pillows afterwards.........
I burn pretty much everything that isn't metal or part of the cabin structure, so I think I will extend an open invitation to Flave in case he's ever back in Montana. Just head west on 12 from the junction with 89 and turn left about three miles towards Townsend...look for the white smoke.
I'm in.
Maybe some off grid ideas too.

Back to the original post... while cabins are wonderful (what hunter doesnโt want one?), the new forum (hint Rick) should deal with all structures, from barns and shops, to cabins and full-on homes. The same skills acquired building homes apply to smaller cabins, and I suspect there are plenty of people on this forum with a lot of wisdom to share.
Nice thread found in the vast wasteland that is the Hunters Campfire...
Is that a Montana Mobile Cabins build?
I really like their stuff.
Twenty or more years ago there was an operation over in Livingston that built cabins to be re-assembled on site. They had about a dozen models, but my favorite was named, I kid you not, โThe Unabomber.โ

My cabin.

Got a hernia?
Dual purpose siding. Need some snowshoes? No problem. ๐๐
Bushcraft, homes and cabins easily a great new form. Throw in some off grid stuff. $
I'm learning a lot about building these days, everything from foundation to structure to electric to insulation. I'll be getting schooled up on plumbing and laying down flooring here in the coming weeks.
I like to see those small cabins.
Bump for Ric.
I like the idea. Let's do it Rick!
That's the HGTV definition of a cabin.
Simple enough, it can replace the "Australia" forum.
Since the wife sometimes hunts 'from' it I guess it could technically pass as a cabin....
....and in the 'other' season.
That's the HGTV definition of a cabin.
Itโs my Home, and Iโve killed things off the front and back porch. We built this four years ago for the bank, and I wake up every day on vacation. ๐ I owed it to myself.
I grew up building and remodeling with my dad.
I still get excited looking at others' ideas and creations
Very interested! I've got a quiet a few acres out in Elk country in Eastern Kentucky. I've been wanting to build a hunting/get-away-from-it-all cabin, but haven't got around to it. This may be the nudge to get the project started.
I sent a pm to Ric about this but haven't heard back though it is hunting season so that could be why.
Iโd love to see this take off.
Iโd be happy to suggest a forum or two that could go away to make room
24hr campfire version of MTV,s cribs???
I have been building mine for 3 plus years and would love to see what you guys have built.
And when it's done, i will take the time for pics and posting if a forum is added.
24hr campfire version of MTV,s cribs???
Lol! Yep!
I love seeing folks cabins. Old or new. Bunch of old fuggers with blinged out golf carts to boot!
I'm not sure I'm for it. I built our house between twenty and twenty-two years ago (took me a couple of years. I only worked on it when I didn't feel like hunting or fishing) and I hate reading about all the things I could have done better if I had only been smarter. Our house ia a smallish (24x36) two bedroom structure with a full basement and a loft which provides a third bedroom. I rented a Bobcat and dug the basement (took me three long days). I mixed the concrete with a 1 yd mixer and set the 6x6 treated posts and poured the footings my self. The walls of the basement were 3/4 inch treated plywood; tarred and covered with 10 mil poly. I built the subfloor then roofed it over with galvanized roofing. We lived in the basement for a year while I did some hunting and fishing. I bought short logs from a log home place and, in 1996, I started on the house. I built a timber frame structure with short log infill. I took about six weeks to finish the walls and the roof then quit for hunting season. Over the winter, I was busy working on a neighbors house so didn't get much time on mine but I did manage to fill in the gable ends and put in the windows and doors. At the same time, I went back to work (machinist) since money was getting a bit tight. I finish the interior walls , wiring and plumbing over the next year. Built steps up to the loft and put in the wood flooring and had the thing ready to move into by Christmas of 1997. The house in still not finished. I have some trim which, despite my wife's constant reminders, I have never finished. I have added on an 8x24 addition which is my exercise room with weights, heavy bag, and speed bag. I built a gun vault underground. I converted half of the basement into my gun shop while the other half became a hairdressing shop. I expect we'll probably die here. I can Identify all sorts of mistakes I made but try to put them out of my mind. GD
Getting ready to do some work on ours next month
-Jake
Very nice!
O'Connor, Dunlap, Kerr and Cooper to keep you company.
Iโd love a forum like that. Iโm getting ready to start building a cabin within the next year.
A forum for this sounds good. Be Well. Rusty
Hey Fubs, nice looking place you have there
