The government has pretty much always been this way. After all it's government. Once elected the power influences the most benign person. Upon election they become omnipotent and only they know what's best for us as a nation. The oath they all take to protect and defend the constitution is just a formality they have to go through in order to defy the constitution. I'm not quite there for civil war but a healthy dose of civil outrage like seen in France might be in order to convince some of them to change their ways. They need to see that they don't actually have the consent of those they attempt to govern. understand this though once you kick the king he will kick back with all his might.
I've known some local people that once elected to political office, immediately changed into something entirely different from the way they were before being elected. Power does that to people, along with money. It gets worse the higher up in the government they go.
I have long been in favor of a "shakeup" of some sort. A good old fashioned revolution and "cleansing"..........sounds good, but at what cost would it be, not just to human life, but to this countries status as a world power. To be perfectly honest about it, I don't know what we need, but we do need for something to happen.........and the sooner the better, because we are very close to going over the cliff, and becoming a Socialist country like Canada and Europe........which is precisely what the Democrats want.
