P said it was immoral. P said no money unless you open government. P sai pay the workers first. P said no SOTU. But, all I can remember is when congress told Reagan if he'd sign that amnesty bill into law, that congress would reform immigration laws and close the border with all sorts of security.

Problem with this is large sections of the wall go through private property. .gov will try to claim it as eminent domain. The landowners are entitled to and will sue. It will be years before most of this will be settled and sections of his wall will never be completed

................Not a cave in.....Trump said in his speech today that the govt will be funded through Feb 15th, which in the meantime all of those federal employees affected will receive their back pay.
After the 3 weeks, if the dems still reject the the border wall by refusing to fund it, then Trump will declare a national emergency on the southern border,,,which he HAS FULL Constitutional authority to do so. Then after that, allocate funds from the DOD to build the wall.

He made a tactical error. He's a negotiator and one of his tactics is to stake out a bold position and then negotiate back from there for what he really wants, ala "Trade Wars are great and easy to win" with China. Which is the same as threatening China with a full-scale trade war. And then negotiating for what he really wants which is something less.
His mistake was saying he'd shut down the government and be proud to do it. Once he said that he owned the shutdown and all of the backlash that came with it. He didn't take into account the unitended consequences like air traffic slowdowns and collateral damage to small businesses that depend on the government staying open, from restuarants to staff augmentation companies.

I wonder if there is now going to be a State of the Union address in Congress on the 29th? Will Pelosi be standing behind him then? I wonder if he will announce a National Emergency? Federal employees have not been getting a check. Historically, when this happens, the GOP takes a beating. Ask Newt about it. Trump let it run a while, and then decided enough is enough. I distinctly recall that convicts sent to the colony of NSW in that period, were given 7 years Transportation (and 30 acres after their term was served or commuted by the governor of the colony)...some were even given double that time in banishment from mother England....14 years transportation. British soldiers who decided to settle in the colony, got the same amount of (30 acres) land grant as convicts ...British officers did a whole lot better for themselves ,some notable ones receiving a number of lucrative land grants...ranging from hundreds to several thousands of acres.
The first Fleet had approx. 750 surviving convicts out of a total of just under 1500 people that arrived. (approx 215 were British marines)
By about the 1840s Free settlers were keeping match with the convict influx numbers...by about 1850 the Oz population was like 400,000 so convicts were already the minority....by 1860 pop. was about 1 million, convict population became a clear minority. (about 160,000 convicts made it to Australia in total ,.. though not all for theft or forgery, assault, etc, ...The British were also transporting political prisoners and other undesirables.)
In the 1820s-30s there was growing pressure from Free settlers to ban convict transport to Oz,...the new generation of settlers were shunning the convict past of the colony and trying hard to bury it and distance themselves from it....A famous early convict , Mary Reiby, who arrived as a teenager became very successful in business to become very wealthy...she was shunned by the new generation of settlers, so much so she got fed up with being rejected by the new wave of cultural attitude, and moved out of Sydney Town to rural Newtown area, building three new mansions, one for herself and one each for her two daughters....clearly money was no object, but money could not buy her acceptance from the new generation of people flooding into the colony.

What happens then? I think it is quite possible that the Trump administration will appeal directly to the SCOTUS, bypassing the Ninth in the name of a national emergency. He might even decide to take a stand against the new concept of district court jurisdiction over the entire United States.

I just buried the last of my prior generation but I did sit down with a grandmother 50 years ago where she labelled photo's and went through who they all were and none were convicts, but free immigrants. Mothers side in late 1800's farhers side at the commencement of WW1where my grandfather sighed up. Because of the unwritten but enacted white Australia policy, the isolation never changed until we got our Obama in 1973. Even though Gough Whitlam was tossed out in 1975, the damage was done.
When I was there in recent months, I was the only Aussie on the trains for much of my journey, sometime 1 or 2 more would appear but the coundtry has changed enormously from the days I used to carry a 22 and a pocket full of cartridges or ventured into the Shooters Home in George Street Sydney and lined up a rifle out the window to check the sights. None of that justifies your cheap shot. The book sounds interesting but is obviously published long after my schooling which was a very controlled environment.
I still recall the uproar when Aussies found out the Government was taking black kids away from their family's up to the 1970's and no-one was told. The public education appears quite controlled in hindsight.

Good point. District Court decisions against Federal action should only negate the actions of the Federal Government within that district. The only Appellate decisions that should affect Federal action within the entire nation are those from the Supreme Court.
The President is rightly proud of the economy. If he owns the shutdown, he owns the charging economy too. He is not going to sacrifice the economy.

If the president does decide to declare a national emergency, I wish his team would adopt the tactic that I've heard the Obamaists used and get someone to file suit against his executive order quickly in a court that would likely uphold Trump. I hope he issues the order for the wall on his authority as CIC, and orders the complete construction (apart from extremely rough terrain, which areas are not prone to illegal entry), not just part. Funding is something that should be dealt with after construction is complete, as is done with the cost of missile barrages into Syria.
PS A real wall, like we were promised, not steel bars that can just be hack-sawed through.

If I was patrolling the border I’d want to be able to see what’s on the other side. But then, I’ve walked a post before. In fact, one of the few in the Marine Corps at the time which was NOT a chlallenging post..... see them- shoot them.
It was the Atomic Ordnance Post at 29 Palms and it had a chain link fence around it. One sentry patrolling inside with a shotgun and one in an armored guardhouse just outside the enclosure with an M 14 and a 45. And it was only a ten minute Jeep ride from the Guardshack.

Trump is fighting a battle over a wall that a lot of Dems have agreed to in the recent past. They are just posturing at the moment because they dont wont to give him a big win, but when it comes down to it, they know border security is a huge issue in this country that is not going to go away anytime soon. At least most of them know it, I think.
If the Republicans agree to give the DACA kids amnesty, the Dems are going to be put in a real tough position themselves to downvote Trumps wall or barrier or whatever they call it. That would not be nonjusticiable (look it up in the context of political question doctrine), so the courts would be obliged to stop such an action based on the Constitutional protections it violates. Not so with the president's delegated power and duty, under that very same document, to defend the border against invasion by whatever means necessary, and without the Constitutional necessity for the approval of either of the other two coequal (look that up, too) branches of government.

The saddest thing of all is that we didn't really have a choice. The GOP primary was pretty much a joke, with a bunch of regional candidates who lacked national appeal, and Trump. Then the presidential election was just as bad........Trump or Hillary.

I still can't fathom how securing a border that has been nearly transparent, and over which humans and drugs and weapons are trafficked by hardened criminal men to the likely tune of billions of dollars' worth a year, is somehow a partisan issue among elected officials. Just because the fence isn't on the property line doesn't mean you have ceded that property to the neighbor. Sometimes it is good to have access to both sides of a structure which couldn't necessarily be done if workers had to stand in Mexico to do it. When I couldn't get my neighbor to cost share on a line fence I pulled off line 21 feet and built a fence, then I planted trees on my 21 feet and requested that his cows not graze my little trees. But getting back to the subject, we could hardly build a barrier down the middle of the river.

All the ranchers down their crowing about not having access to the water I guess never heard of concrete canals to get the water from the river to their land.
