I did 60 chest to the floor-full extension push ups in 60 seconds 2 1/2 years ago the night before my shoulder replacement surgery. That was 3 surgeries ago. I can't do one right now. Still working the hell out of PT. I keep my cardiovascular fitness through bicycling.
Did 50 to show some young'uz how lame they are 18 dead hang pull-ups , left the gym a couple of hours before . Oh yeah I was wearing a toolbelt -18V drill- handtools etc. . Year+ ago broke my arm and other injuries so right now I'm pretty lame since right wrist is giving me trouble .
Read this, jumped down and did 20, went slow for 6 more, still re-habbing a rotator cuff tear in right shoulder, gotdang belly hurts worse than my shoulders.
110 in a minute last year, at 63 years old. Not too shabby for a fat old powerlifter.
1,1,1...you got to go lower, 2, 3, 3,3,lower 4, 4,4...
What's that supposed to mean? I can't do much, but I can do pushups full range. I had severe anxiety problems, and used to do them while on tour. 4 sets of 200 in the morning, before the bus left, to burn off tension.

Damnit, you sound like that old power lifter Buddy of mine, he hits that iron like a madman, tells me he does that too keep from killing stupid people every single day of his life.

Not on my part. I hold 6 world records in bench, mostly in a bench shirt. Currently at 174 bodyweight, 63 years old, 525 shirted, drug free bench. Some of us are unusual. Not at much else. That stuff, I can still do. For now.

No pushups for me. Tore a ligament over a year ago in my right wrist hooking up the hydraulics on the excavator flail mower. Figures it's my right hand, ain't never gunna heal the way I flog that thing LOL!
Bad shoulder. Push ups and me don't get along anymore. I still moved a couple tons of metal on my shift last night. Robot dropped one in degate area, caught on frame. Had to climb up, balance and lean way over to wrestle it out. That was NOT good on my back. Made me not coyote hunt today. Am finally mobile.
Hurt myself at 10pm, worked my azz off the next 2 hrs to finish shift. Rigor mortis was setting in before I got home LOL
When I was 72, about two and a half years ago, I did 80 on my birthday. Since them I had shoulder surgery on both shoulders. I couldn't do any on my 73 or 74 birthday. But last month I set a goal of 100 on my 75 birthday in July. I set a 12" high "stop" under my chest to see how well I could do. I did 100 easily and stopped. The next day I used an 11" stop and again did 100 with ease. Next day I used 10" stop with the same results. When I dropped to 9" it took about a week to get to 100. Now I dropped to 8 1/2". After about a week I did 92 yesterday. Maybe Monday I will make 100. I will keep this up until July 15.

I used to do 57 push-ups in a minute to max out my PT test. Got older and my max became fell to 44. I would always quit when I got my max, why do any more I don't get bonus points. As an olde retiree now, I stick to weights with running or the elliptical on alternating days.
Typically would do pyramids starting at 30 and going down by 5 every rep.
So dropped and knocked out 42 quick just to make sure I didn't need to turn in my man card according to Deflave.
I did the same, I haven't done 40+ since I retired. Needless to say, I can still max out that part of the AF PT test, sit-ups as well. Waist and run time, well they need some work.

I just did as many as I could. Tried to make 200. 100%. I didn't care where it put me. The deal was to do my best. Whether it's 20 or 200, it's just as hard, if it's a max effort.
The guys were fuggin around at work and we had a competition to see who could do most push ups. My buddy, competing body builder, did 100. He is 41. I did 65. I am 42. All of the 20 year olds did less than 30. One dude, a CrossFit coach did exactly 30. I worry for the youngsters...
I work push-ups into my exercise weekly if not more and am not sure how many I can do in one set, but it is definitely over 41 at least for the first couple of sets.
About 10 years ago I had a resetting of my perception of my fitness level and ability to do push-ups. My friend invited me to a boot camp class in his neighborhood. I thought I was in relatively good shape for a then approaching on middle-aged guy. I thought I was in good shape until I worked my way to the push-up station.
The instructor had step benches with spaces between them set up across the floor. You would do a full push-up, then crab walk on arm's legnth, then push-up with one hand on and one off the step, then push-up with both hands on the step and work your way across the floor in this manner. We did this all the way across the floor and back nonstop for something like 3-4 minutes when already fatigued from other stations.
The resetting of my perception of my fitness level came when I had a 5'2", unassuming, grey-haired, grandmotherly, about 65-year-old woman next to me that I kept holding up. Eventually, I had to let her pass because I couldn't keep up with her, and I could sense she was frustrated that I was slowing her workout. I don't go to that class often because I have options closer to my house, but my friends tell me that lady is still going strong 10 years later.
Dumbest article ever. If you can do the pushups, it's most likely because you have a regular exercise routine. I don't routinely do pushups, but do workout 5 times a week between full body HIIT and spinning for cardio. This morning, step 1 in the work out was "60 pushups".

Big deal, this morning I managed to fill the kettle and almost got the rubbish bin emptied before I came over all faint...good thing I had hot water for a cup of coffee.
With a partial rotator tear in one shoulder and a mild slap tear in the other and arthritis, my shoulders don't like pushups. I think it's bullshit. I had arduous physicals every other year that pushed you hard on the treadmill. If you threw any ectopy or flb's it was off duty and a cardiologist referral.

Agreed.
Pushups are a pretty poor barometer for fitness. One of the reasons the Armed Forces Don’t use them for testing.

The Army still does... for the record i hate pushups, by army standard to do correct pushups guys with long arms are [bleep].. guys claiming to do 100 push-ups, would be lucky if 40 of them were counted during a apft.. even in the new revamped army pt test pushups are still in it. Why we don’t go to pull-ups like the marine Corp is beyond me..

Mine were done correctly and counted in an official military PT. Sorry you're unable to do them. I specifically trained for it. It's possible. Anyway, they're just pushups, and are a good test for power to weight strength.
I didn't read the whole thread but to me it sounds like a cause and effect question. Is it the pushups, or the fact that anyone who can do 40 pushups is working out regularly? In other words, could you say the same thing about someone who can do 10 pullups? No one who's a couch potato can do either.

I can do 10 pullups & 40 pushups. You definitely need to work out regularly to make it happen. I don't do them often, I think walking/jogging/any cardio is better for most.

What do they use?
Probably run your nuts in the dirt with a 90lb pack on your back.

Actually, the Army still does use pushups as part of pt testing. The tests are changing next year but pushups will continue to be a part of it.

That’s the way I see it, but 40 consecutive takes some doing beyond 30 minutes jogging or circuit training. unless you are actively working pushups or bench, 40 consecutive pushups isn’t going to happen and if it does, you are going to be one hurting unit the next day. When I was subbing in the high school last year for PE, I would have push up contests with the kids. I’d usually beat 90% of the junior/senior boys. Lots of weaklings as most couldn’t do 10.

All you PT math guys, what percentage of body weight is a man pressing when he does a correct pushup, I weigh 250, guess I'm pressing 125 lbs doing a pushup?
Depends on how your weight is distributed on your body. But... your head is cantilevered beyond your shoulders. My guess would be a bit more than 50% of body weight for most people.
edit: Internet numbers varied from around 60% to low 70%s.

That sounds about right Firth, I hadn't thought to go grab a bathroom scale by the sides planked? out and read what it says.

Doubt it. Not real push ups at least. All the way down, all the way up. I've been around some super fit SF types and they're nowhere close to that. Is it possible? Of course. But from what I've personally seen those who claim to do tons don't do them properly.

Don't ever bet against a man that can bench press over twice his own body weight Taco, you'll lose.
I understand what you're saying, but, I saw a bud back in the day grip two 100 pound dumbells on the floor and use those so he could return/yank himself back to the floor quicker, then BOOM!, back up and down again, that was 30 some years ago and would have killed me then!
Then you got my joke about it. Personally, the best I ever saw was about 110 in two minutes by a little fireplug who looked like Mike Tyson.
The most I ever did was 100 in 2 minutes on the Navy PRT and I never stopped moving. Can't imagine how anyone could do significantly more in that amount of time. Hell, someone could theoretically push up faster than me, but you can't make gravity pull you down any faster LOL.

Having won a number of pushup competitions I'd be inclined to agree with Taco.
Oh ok, I never really thought about that. I usually do them only every other day, and not 200, so should be ok. Maybe I should actually educate myself instead of just doing whatever seems like a good idea at the time lol

Pushups an sit-ups are for 2 minutes. You do all you can.
2 mile run is timed.
I like the Army test much better than my AF test. Our disciplines are only 60 seconds each and that can be a factor for some. I max out push-ups in about 45 sec easily, but could use a little more time for our "crunches"
The runs are about a wash as we only do 1.5, but at a pretty quick pace to score high enough.
Just kidding Flave... I got myself in a little hot water with Stick while you were gone and in order to gain favor I had to throw you under the bus..... sorry bro I think Mannlicher may have taken you off ignore though?

Stick say bad things about me? WTF?
I had lunch with Local Dirty the other day. Mannlicher nowhere to be found. Says 'flave an ass hole.
There are accelerated pushup routines you can do but they have to be cyclic.
You're full of it. 200 a day shouldn't bother you, even if done all at once. I've benched up to 700 full range in a shirt. That did require a fair amount of recovery. When I did the 110 in a minute, I weighed 178. No bad feedback at all. The 197, I weighed 123. Again, nothing bad. It's flat out no bs. I don't really think you know what you're talking about.

Can't argue with that!
It's complicated... haha No Stick did not say bad things about you, I said bad things about Stick and the moral authority of the campfire came down hard on me, I fought back tho..... I may have exaggerated about throwing you under the bus..... there was a thing with Shrap & Mannlicher tho...... no worries buddy...

I did that for a couple of years. As I said, I had severe anxiety problems and that helped. I did not weigh much then, though. Bodyweight exercises were virtually no strain. I don't do them anymore now, but do go over 300 in bench every week. Went 475 in a loose shirt last week, probably 535 or so in the tight one, this week. 10 years ago, I was over 600 every week. Slowed down some. It is one of the things I am good at. My 530 bench was the highest of all time, over 50, drug free, multiply 181. 180 over the former record. I worked hard at it, and earned every damn pound.

Congrats on your accomplishments but 200 pushups a day is ill advised over any extended length of time.
If somebody has to train to get pushup numbers up for the purposes of work there are good programs to follow. But they're all cyclic.

Wow. I do twenty-five a day, as soon as I get up and get done pissing for five minutes. I thought that was pretty good for a fat old man.

Again, I was very light. Around 123. Very strong, 315 raw bench, and a former ring specialist gymnast. Good ligaments. I only stopped at 200 because it was boring. On tour, we were out for a month. I did 4 sets of 200, before bus departure time, to burn off nervous energy. The nerves were a lot worse than any feedback from the pushups. We all have our own Achilles heel. That's why I don't think I'll compete anymore. Anxiety sucks. I'm 200 over the world bench record, for my age and weight. I don't have the will to overcome it anymore.
Real full range push ups? That's almost 2 pushups per second! I see trainers on TV all the time rapidly doing what I call half push ups. When I was 14 I could do 60 full range push ups in a minute. These were full range push ups where my chest touched the floor and I fully extended my arms at the end of each pushup. Usually my hands would come off the floor at the end of each pushup.

Yeah, 120 is about what you can do in two minutes if you do good full range pushups and do not stop or even slow down. It’s going to be about one a second.

Yes, 2 a second, full range. I actually have to pike them down some, because you don't fall that fast. I have seen clap pushups. I could push up, clap in front, behind, and in front again. Very good speed and power to weight. I suck at endurance though. I wasn't supposed to be able to bench what I did either.

That's what I find questionable. Lets say he did have the strength and endurance to push up that many times, that quickly, okay. The problem is on the way up your body needs to lose that upward momentum, then gravity needs to bring you back down before you can push up again. There is no speeding that up. And to do full range, all the way down, all the way up, that loss of momentum and the fall back down takes time. 110 in 60 seconds??? Full range?

Might be what you can do....have no idea what I have now. I imagine around a hundred a minute. Don't think I could even make 2 minutes anymore.

Pike them down some? The falling is the questionable part, as you said you don't fall that fast. If you did somehow manage 110 in 60 seconds, full range (which I have never seen), that would be damn impressive to see.
That why the animal I posted about yesterday was grabbing two 100lb dumbells and had a gym mat between them for when his chest slammed back down after he 'pulled' himself back down faster then he could fall.

Yup. Enough though. I went way over what most people could do, largely because of an infirmity that was alleviated somewhat with extreme physical exertion. I have a terrible anxiety problem. At 50, I was 190 pounds, drug free, and did a 700 full range, shirted bench, gym lift. 855 off 2 boards. At just about 64 and 174, my shirted bench is a gym lift of 545. That is not supposed to be possible. It is, though.
You guys are looking at it from the vantage point of someone who is probably around 6 foot tall and maybe a little stronger or a lot stronger than average.
Benchman is well under average height and way above average strength. Not quite the equivalent of us doing pushups on our knees but he definitely has a pushup advantage.
Benchman if you get in a pushup position with your hands on a bathroom scale what's the weight reading?

Agreed, some people are just freaks of nature, I'm the same way, but only in the thickheaded dept!

I did a lot of impressive upper body stuff. I worked my ass off to do it, too. Piking down, was just flexing the upper body down faster than it could fall, and locking up to catch myself at the bottom. The press up was pretty much an explosive push that carried to the top. No stopping, no slowing down. As I said, I don't think I have 2 minutes in me anymore. It is a drag race to 1 minute. Pretty hard, no matter how you cut it.

That was interesting. Fully dressed, 181.3. Hands on scale, pushup position, 128.4, or just over 70%.

Yeah, 120 is about what you can do in two minutes if you do good full range pushups and do not stop or even slow down. It’s going to be about one a second.
Might be what you can do....have no idea what I have now. I imagine around a hundred a minute. Don't think I could even make 2 minutes anymore.
I don’t know, I’ve probably watched a couple thousand people do as many push-ups as they can in two minutes and I’ve never seen anyone do that many in a minute. A video of said performance might be instructive.

When was the last time you saw a 58 year old 177 pound guy bench press 530, drug free? I know of only one place you could have. Don't remember seeing you there. Just missed a 560 that day. Butt came up. I have no videos and have no inclination to make one. Think what you like.
I'm just shy of 6'2" so we're pretty close. When I ran every day I stayed around 220-225, but after breaking my back in a parachute jump the running had to go.

Damn, I'm 56 and a lazy chitbird, I miss 28 years old and a solid 235!

It isn’t a matter of strength. You simply can’t do 110 push-ups in one minute. It’s like an 8 second one hundred meter dash.
Yes, abs are very much at work in a pushup, without that your back/butt would collapse down, or equally common, your butt rises up so you aren't in a flat plank anymore.
Nobody is questioning the strength of being able to do 110 in 60seconds, it's the physics of it, short of anchoring to the ground (like the 100lb dumb bell person), you are at the mercy of gravity coming back down. That's the limiting factor.
Regardless you're out of my league, though the "pike down" part may break the "pushup rules", it's still impressive.

Piking, essentially stops the momentum at the top. You come back down faster, by changing direction faster. Faster turnaround. I highly doubt it would affect anything. Anyway, enough. Suit yourself.
At 28 I was about 210, but working in the woods is great way to keep the weight down. I re-enlisted at 29 and went from busting my tail in the woods for 10-12 hours to 1 hour or so of PT a day.
Then started lifting a little in my 30's and bumped up to 225 or so. Broke my back in 2010 and went to riding bikes and doing kettlebells to stay somewhat in shape. Now I'm 50 and all kinds of gimped up.
I haven't had any since I was a kid. They were all orange sherbet back then, but I bet that if they are still around, they come in different flavors now.

My body is not too bad, but my head is all gimped up...broke my back in gymnastics, at 17. Takes a lot out of you, that's for sure. Never goes away.

I have no reason to disbelieve you. Pretty cool. Who knows, maybe you're one of the best pushup men of all time. Hell, maybe you're the best.
I probably could do 100 at a time, Army-style, counted out by an officer or a sarge. No time limit though, that I remember, so I have no idea how long it took...not a real long time. Like I said, I do 25 first thing in the morning, every day. I expect I could double that if I had to. I try to do them army-style and think I am, but nobody is supervising me, so who knows?

There are a lot of people here whose heads are all gimped up although they don't admit it. Your head seems pretty okay in comparison from what I've seen of your posts Benchman.
Here is a video of the greatest push up warrior of all time doing some with Sean Hannity just to show you what an actual push-up looks like and how long it takes.

Thanks. It gets frustrating. Just did 30 sec, to see what happened. 60. 2 a second. Glasses came off from changing direction quickly. Went to 405 raw for board presses this morning. Upper body is pretty trashed right now. Well anyway, I went full range, and it was 2 a second. Huffing and puffing a bit. Just finished a Guinness, too....

That's wonderful, but he's not doing them for speed. I have no doubt he could do them to the same range of motion, twice as fast, at least.
