It appears that "social justice" is in the process of taking a hit in Ohio.

The day after Trump won the election, three black Oberlin students, a male and two females, got caught shoplifting three bottles of wine from Gibson's Bakery. A Gibson's employee confronted them and followed them out of the store. The three shoplifters fought him, and when the police arrived had him on the ground beating on him. They have all pleaded guilty to the shoplifting and the assault. Police body cam shows the police being very calm and professional, and the male student howling in terror at being arrested.

The next night a student mob formed in front of the bakery, with a black female student using a bullhorn to claim that Gibson's was racist, and had profiled the shoplifters. A female Dean and Vice President of Oberlin was on scene, with her own bullhorn. She and another Oberlin official were actively leading the protest, telling students where to go to get more copies of their flier, handing out fliers, etc. Oberlin has been getting food service from Gibson's since 1885, but cut off their contract. They offered to turn the contract back on if Gibson's would get the shoplifting charges dismissed.

So Gibson's sued Oberlin. Trial has been underway since Monday.

With the exception of Fox, there has been nothing on the national news about this. An attorney blogger at Legal Insurrection has been in the courtroom, and is reporting on each day's happenings. It is obviously not going well for Oberlin. The Dean claims she was just there trying to calm things down. The police and other witnesses tell a very different story. According to Legal Insurrection, the jury is obviously not buying Oberlin's defense.

So, just possibly, colleges and universities will see the writing on the wall, and start to back down a bit from some of the social justice nonsense that has been going on.

In other news, a federal court has held that a police officer can sue the organizer of a Black Lives Matter freeway blockade, where the officer was injured.

Still more: The US Attorney appointed to investigate the origins of the Russia hoax has already been on the job for a few weeks. His appointment was just announced, but he is already underway.
Power Line blog was following the Oberlin debacle as well.
Good, stupid should HURT!
Social Justice = Blacks are exempt from laws.
Put them all on a leaky garbage barge, and let Trump tell Kim Jong-un he has a target that will benefit all of the world if he makes a direct hit.
I hope they lose the lawsuit and it costs them a ton of money!

So in other words, some strange social-justice version of extortion or blackmail?

I suspect that if the yute's were indeed innocent, their case would stand on it's own merit.

This country needs a f**king enema.
The Oberlin Dean needs to lose her job too. MAGA.....YOUR'E FIRED
Hope Oberlin pays through the nose. Sounds like extortion to me and a slam dunk case. Only way those administrations will get the message and start holding people accountable is through their bank account. I am guessing this Dean currently still has her job.
the mobs are getting out of order everywhere.

we either have laws to live by or we don't.

if we don't, it'll be every man for himself.

Superb. Let's hope one of the outcomes is a legal roadmap and precedent for conservatives to be able to make these a-holes accountable for their actions.

Not surprising from Oberlin. I'm sure these snowflakes look forward to careers in fast food service industry.

No matter how this case turns out, there's absolutely no reason to stop those liberal POSs from doin the same thing again, every day.

Cause the taxpayers pay the judgment, or the taxpayers paid for the insurance (which is gonna go up now) ta pay the judgment.

The only way any accountability for action will ever be achieved, is by takin the amount of the judgment outta the retirement benefits of the school district employees.

That makes the ones that f'ked up, actually hafta pay the judgment.

True in most cases but in this case Oberlin is private so they are on their own. The bill will be on them and their insurance.

Funny how they live in their own little world created within the world we white folks created , anyway on her page [president] she mentions the school is all about social justice . They can't be dragged out of victimhood .

And, be very, very expensive. Courts should start allowing law suits to proceed with severe financial penalties awarded by jurors.

This would put some “Justice” into the SJW azz real quick. 😎

so here are two educated women, supposedly in a position of authority....

and then they still want to go out and support, 3 people of their own race shoplifting...
which means not only are they being racists and supremists, they are also justifying crime, regardless of how petty it is....

and what does this say for our nation....

but heaven forbid someone calls these spooks Ni66ers....

Wow. That was practically an instant verdict. It just went to the jury.

This is just the first award. There is a punitive damages phase coming up that could bring the total to $33million.

How absolutely fitting and proper!

Don't bet on the tuition increase. They might be private but that doesn't mean American taxpayers aren't paying for the majority of it.

From their financial aid website:

"During the 2017-18 academic year, Oberlin College provided over $65 million in financial aid. More than three-quarters of students received a total of approximately $90 million in aid from Oberlin College, federal, state and private sources."

A good start indeed. I hope other victims of this fake outrage of all sorts start pushing back.
Looks like, with punitive damages, the verdict is $44 million. Nice!

There's a good chance that Oberlin's insurance won't cover this verdict and associated costs:

Not a chance. This is who they've become and this is who they will remain, short of a bullet to the head.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/oberli...verdict-gibsons-bakery-44-million-libel/

This month, a jury awarded Gibson's Bakery a $44 million verdict, including $33.2 million in punitive damages, against Oberlin College in Ohio. Oberlin College lost a defamation lawsuit brought by local bakery Gibson's who said they were libelously accused of racism.

The jury found Oberlin College supported the allegations of racism from its students, as members of Oberlin's student senate published a resolution saying Gibson's had "a history of racial profiling and discriminatory treatment," while students also used a campus printer to distribute a flyer that accused Gibson's of being a "racist establishment."

Oberlin College — a private liberal arts college of over 3,000 students and faculty located 15 miles off the shores of Lake Erie in Oberlin, Ohio — found itself at the center of a controversy that encompassed small business rights, free speech, racism and political correctness. Oberlin College president Carmen Twillie Ambar spoke with CBSN on Wednesday about the verdict. She wasn't in the post when the incident unfolded years ago.

"I think this decision is really about whether a college should be held liable for the speech of students," Ambar told CBSN's Tanya Rivero. "The college didn't construct the flyer, the college didn't condone the flyer, it didn't write the Student Senate resolution. The judge held at the time that the speech the students were making at the protest was protected speech."

It all began in November 2016, the day after Donald Trump's election. An African American Oberlin College student was caught shoplifting a bottle of wine from Gibson's Bakery, a family-owned establishment located in the small college town. As store owner Allyn D. Gibson engaged with a physical struggle with the student, two other African American students joined in to escalate the confrontation.

The three students were eventually arrested and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges, acknowledging in court that Allyn D. Gibson was within his right to detain the shoplifter and that his actions were not racially motivated, according to the Chronicle-Telegram. But instead of fading away, the shoplifting incident sparked a wave of fierce protests led by Oberlin College students who claimed that Gibson's Bakery engaged in racial profiling and that the family who owned the store were racists.

And it didn't end with protests. According to local station WKYC-TV, Gibson's Bakery employees had their tires slashed and experienced verbal abuse. Flyers were passed out around campus accusing the store of racism and boycotts were promised. Oberlin College's vice president and dean of students Meredith Raimondo joined in calling the bakery a "racist establishment." Soon after, the college ended all business purchases with the bakery, which had been serving students since 1885.

In November 2017, the Gibsons sued Oberlin and Raimondo for slander, accusing faculty members of encouraging the protests against the bakery by suspending classes, distributing flyers, and supplying protesters with free food and drink. Ambar told CBSN that Raimondo's role in the protest was mischaracterized.

"There was one administrator there who was representing the institution, and the student handbook requires her to be there, the dean of students," Ambar said Wednesday. "She was there to ensure that the protest was lawful and was safe, and was saying to students 'you can't stand there, you can't stand there.'"

"Some people have perceived that as being part of the protest," Ambar added. "But that's the work that colleges do to de-escalate a protest and to ensure students do it in a safe and lawful way."
I used to stop in a Gibsons on a regular basis. Always a great cup of morning coffee and two bagels with butter and cream cheese. Always great people.
We knew that the jury verdict would be reduced to comply with Ohio laws capping damages. That judgement came down today. The $44 million was reduced to "only" $25 million. Well, that, plus the issue of attorney's fees is yet to be decided. Some estimate that will come to another $10 million.

25 Mill, would you close up shop or keep on doing what your family has done for over a century?

Of course old Mr. Gibson is not going anywhere. He always loved that place and he will die there. He's around 92 years old.
