My brother-in-law inherited a very old copy of "little Black Sambo" when his parents died. His wife, a liberal librarian, wouldn't allow him to keep the book at their house. Being a typical liberal man these days he gave the book away.

I remember Little Black Sambo out-smarting the tigers, to beat them; even as a small kid I thought he was smart. The story was not derogatory to him.

The creator probably didn't realize tigers weren't native to Africa.

While out walking, Sambo encounters four hungry tigers, and surrenders his colourful new clothes, shoes, and umbrella so they will not eat him. The tigers are vain and each thinks Sambo's clothes are the best. They chase each other around a tree until they are reduced to a pool of ghee (clarified butter). Sambo then recovers his clothes and collects the ghee, which his mother uses to make pancakes.

...and this is how pancakes and fried chicken became acceptable culinary table fare.
