IIRC, the slave belonged to his wife before he married her, and came into the family through the marriage.

IIRC, the slave was a gift from Julia's parents. This was during Grant's "Hardscrabble" times when he cut firewood to make ends meet.
Grant could have sold him. Lord knows he needed the money, but the idea of slavery rankled his sensibilities, and he set the fellow free. It's unknown what became of the black.

Not one traitor has gone to court, been indicted, seen a grand jury, or jail. Until the traitors are prosecuted, tried, and sentenced there is no rule of law in this country. There are laws against what the democrats are doing. These laws are being bent or forgotten when it is a democrat breaking them. Sanctuary cities still exist. In fact we have sanctuary States too. Democrats are still mocking President Trump and family. Cannot even keep New York City from being a sanctuary city. Holes all over in the wall. Even congress acts like coyotes. Some one tell Trump about these problems. Sanctuary BS is just getting worse.
