Not everybody lives in the frozen tundra. It's still in the high 80's in Kentucky,...was in the 90's yesterday.

I think that does a pretty good job of explaining it. Humans seem to have very short memories, and we have a need to experience things for ourselves in order to effectively learn lessons. We aren't so different from other animals in many ways. We'll take the easy path if given the option, eat the free food if its offered,and put off work if we can get away with it. Not everyone is like that, of course, but most probably are and even those who aren't can be sucked into those habits over time.

Politicians are simply those who realize that they can gain power and money by manipulating others with the promise of easy and free things. It's an age old formula that just keeps working because of fundamental human weaknesses. The only time it doesn't work that great is on a relatively small group of strong minded and strong willed people who have seen first hand the destruction caused by following that path, but inevitably that pool gets diluted and the show is back on the road.
