691,145 Californians left last year: What state did they go to?

Where do Californians go when they leave?
New Census Bureau migration data for 2018 shows folks who leave the state are likely to end up west of the Mississippi River.
Here’s what my trusty spreadsheet tells me about where 691,145 Californians who left for other states now call home.
In raw terms of people moving, the top spot for Californians is Texas, which got 86,164 Californians in 2018. Next came Arizona (68,516), Washington (55,467), Nevada (50,707), and Oregon (43,058). All told, California had the most exits among the state and that wave grew by 4% in a year.
Texas also had the largest “net gain” from California. You know, more ins than outs: 48,354. Next was Arizona (34,846), Nevada (28,274), Oregon (19,008), and Washington (17,460).
Or look at the comings and goings as a ratio of ins to outs.

Tiny Idaho wins this race with 497 arrivals from the Golden State for every 100 former Gem State residents who moved to California. Next was South Carolina (247 ins per 100 out); Texas (228); Nevada (226); and Arizona (203).
Now folks do move to California: 501,023 arrived from other states in 2018. And yes, that’s the third-highest inflow among the states. But that’s down 4.2% in a year and a five-year low. And, by the way, only Texas and Florida drew more in.
The No. 1 state new Californians came from was Washington (38,007); then Texas (37,810); New York (34,848); Arizona (33,670); and Oregon (24,050).
California’s biggest “net gains” (more ins than outs) are decidedly eastern: No. 1 is New York (9,593); then Illinois (5,647), Ohio (5,200), Massachusetts (3,628), and Maryland (3,118).
And if you look at my “in/out ratio,” you see California does best with West Virginia, losing 42 for every 100 arrivals; then Delaware (48), North Dakota (54), Alabama (58), and Connecticut (60).
I'm betting that as the number of Califoricans arrive in Texas they will set about turning in to Calicornica that they left. Good bye Texas
My best friend from college and his wife moved from California to Texas a few months ago. They are the kind of people we want in Texas. He retired after teaching in LA county for 30 years. He was stationed at Ft Hood for a while and he wanted to get back here. He said things were worse than you see in the news in California.

That is any time that urban folks move to a rural area. Saw it in NE PA in the late 1980's with people moving out of NJ. See it here in north central KY with folks moving out of the suburbs of Cincinnati.

Have a new neighbor down the road. An attorney from the city. Told another neighbor that he better not catch anyone shooting "HIS" deer during deer season. Past summer, there was a fairly bad accident across the road from his house during the day. Fire company set up a landing zone in his front yard. Multiple pieces of fire apparatus, personal vehicles and a helicopter set down on his "manicured" grass... laugh
Lots of Californians moving to where I live in a large suburban community north of Dallas.
The few that I knew in Texas were conservative. One guy told me moving to Texas was like moving to America.
The states should have training seminars for the new arrivals.
If they are moving out of California they might just be people whose values do not align with the communist regime. If they are liberals then I don't hold out hope that they learned from the steaming wreck they just left.

If they voted Democrat in their previous state they need to be hit with an import tax laugh
Sad to say, but I could tolerate a Californian before a yankee from New Jersey or New York. Pompous, arrogant, a holes.
I've lived in Oregon almost all my life (just a few of my tweener years in Oklahoma).

Californians have utterly transformed this formally great state.

In 20 years you Texans let me know how this works out.
They are like the illegals streaming in from the south, they need to stand and fight in their own spot, not infect the surrounding lands with their lack of desire to better their lives where they were.

That plus the deluge pouring in across the border.

The big push is to flip TX.

If that does happen, we screwed.

Throw in FL and we really screwed. Electoral College won’t matter.

The Austin area is getting a lot of California liberals due to cheaper cost of living and all the tech companies there. I’ve noticed as well that a lot of the Californians we get may be conservative by California standards but not normal people standards. I worked with one that constantly gripes about the pc police there but was aghast when he saw a kid where a confederate flag t shirt at his daughters high school and was saying th kid. Should be suspended
it's like a virus. the californians that is. they have swarmed over my home town in central arizona, and they bring a lot of their belief systems with them.
this is just like yankees moving to Florida. They come here for the financial and social benefits, and wind up turning the place into the same [bleep] hole they migrated from.
Conservatives are eventually going to run out of places to hide.
...like a metastatic cancer.
Most of us refugees from California are very conservative. If a former Californian votes demorate they should be hung for treason.
Thank God for Texas, Arizona, Idaho, Washington and Nevada. If not for those states, Wyoming would probably be totally over run with Kalifornicators.

You fellers keep up the good work. whistle

You have to understand democrats. They aren't live and let live, or let the chips fall where they will kind of people. Texas is a huge prize electorally, they are going to go after it, and they are going to take it.
Flooding Austin everyday.

Uhh.. That's already happening.
Seems like you Texans are doing a great job losing your state al by yourselves. Two families I know have relocated to Texas in the last couple years. Uber gun owning conservatives. Calguns.com is full of hundreds of Kommiefornia expats that have moved to Texas and other states.

FYI Both your former Governor and Current have been in Kommiefornia spending millions of your tax dollars for the last 5+ years recruiting Californians and Businesses to relocate to Tejas.

Well said! Worriedman!!!!
The biggest fuggin threat to TX are Illegal Wetbacks! 😡

If the Commie Socialists have their way, they’ll let them vote and we will be truly fuqked. 😡
Commiefornicators are becoming as obnoxious as damyankees. As long as they stay west of the Rockies and/or north of Kentucky, no problem. Once they cross either one of those borders, there ought to be "open season, no limit" just like any other kind of varmints!
They will have a hard time crowding all the Meskins out

Yep. I’d welcome Californians any ole day over wetbacks.

Not much to say goodbye to. It is effectively a blue state and has been for years, all that is left is the marketing department.
We're getting a good bit from the NE to. We talked to a family moving from New Jersery to the suburbs of Austin. They said they sold their house, bought more than double the house here on acreage, and still had six figures left over. I'm sure we're getting some good ones but I've come in contact with the opposite end of the spectrum as well

They often leave Florida and settle halfway home, here in N.C. They usually refuse to integrate, and they end up polluting our great state with thier existance.

They're like porcupines. They schitt their nests making them unliveable and then move on elsewhere and proceed to do it all over again.
Not Good for Texas
What does Texas, and other States expect when they actively recruit businesses, many of whom are the kind that attract educated, urbane, and many times liberal employees? Growth is the issue, and unfortunately our capitalistic system demands growth to keep functioning properly.

Having grown up in a very conservative SoCal county in the 60's and 70's I have firsthand experience what unlimited growth will do. San Diego County is now intolerable for many of our type. My old brother moved out a few years back, a younger one still works there and has a home in AZ he's going to retire to, another is getting ready to leave and go be with his kid and grandkids in NC, and my sister just may be stuck as she likes warm and the beach. The homeless problem where she lives just might drive her out there.

Go ahead all you Red States, keep trying to attract big companies, looking to cash in on business growth, which brings population growth, which will bring a different mindset to the voting populace. Your state will become the next TX, AZ, or FL soon enough.

See Fat City's post above. It's been known for years the way TX is heading.

^^^^YUP Geno,

They keep complaining but then they begging California businesses to relocate.

All the California gun owners that I know who have relocated immediately purchased quite a few new "toys" and ammo that they couldn't get in Kommiefornia.

Buncha whiners.

Here read this ya buncha nimbys. Then call Abbott and tell him to quit ringing the bell Texas is open for businesses and relocations.
