I have a barndomium that gets used about 2 or 3 days per month so a full Directv package is not necessary. Is there a good outdoor HDTV antenna that y'all can recommend to get local channels and at least a few others? Thanks

First, go HERE to see what kind of reception and number of channels you can expect to get. And the distance to the transmitters. Then and only then shop for an antenna rated to "reach" that far.

What ever you get make sure it will receive VHF stations, Some are still broadcasting in the VHF band.
I have a fancy low profile antenna in the Motor Home. It's a crap shot in getting some VHF stations.

I can wholeheartedly recommend one of these. Been good for us pulling in from two different tower clusters. IIRC they're over 50 miles.

I run a tailgater auto dish.
It's Dish, so I don't know if direct has the auto pointing dish
Be as cheap to set up like that as some of the antenna being shown.
I just set it down, hook up and point south. the dish automatically finds the sats. I need.
Easy to do.
Now Direct I don't know if they have the auto set ups.
Then you have your 250 channels as you do at home, going to have to call them to find out what they offer.

but was having to spend too much time futzing around with “directing” it.

As long as you’re within 20-30 miles of the signal, you’ll probably be happier with the “omni-directional” style. Looks less “clunky”, too.

Oh, and if you’re having to run much more than 25 ft of cable, get an amplifier, too....

It's my understanding that there's no real technical difference in HD versus ordinary antennas, either will receive HD quality signals. The "HD" antenna advertising is essentially sales hype. However the quality of signal reception can vary depending on an antenna's workmanship, design, materials used and especially placement of antenna.

We just moved into a new house. I was not ready to start punching holes in the wall for a co-ax. So I went down to Walmart and checked what they had.

I found indoor antennas in 40 mi, 60 mi, and 80 mile ratings, each a bit more expensive than the former. They were out of the eighty mile, so I purchased the 60 mile indoor antenna for about $50.

It took me about a week to find a good place to set the antenna and the best orientation. But it picks up 2.1 -2.4, 4.1 - 4.4, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 7.1, 7.2, 9.1, 9.2, 12.1 - 12.4, 13.1 - 13.4 then a bunch of shopping channels and devotional networks in the twenties and thirties, and then about 25 more channels north of the 100 mark. plus there is a bunch of audio programming available besides that.

For us old farts there's Grit TV, and Me TV, and other archaic programming, and it is all for free, mostly HD, and even some in 4K.
