And layed out some pretty interesting Trade Goods today...in the hopes of scoring some Leupold Artifacts, some other needed wares as well as regain possession of my rebarreled 700....and, aquire a suitable Short Action for the boy....

We scored on all levels and even managed a few bucks gas money to boot for the ride home.

Found another run of the mill pre owned 700 in .243..which I didn't savy the price tag at first but held out to the bitter end and we struck a good deal both could live with.

The boy and I are willing to overlook the short comings of the mounted glass...for the time being as it's his first CF and it's not a scope beater chambering. Sure to be in the market for an additional Leupy to complete the package some time soon.

We'll run a few factory test loads downrange in the AM...

His first Deer Rifle...can you tell he's tickled with it..??

Is that stickbow in the background going to get a workout this year? Our season starts in the morning and my long bow is ready.

Dan
It just might...ours starts in two weeks.

Findin' the time to bow hunt this year though is gonna be tuff, at least we got Sundays for such things...
nice BDL, in a good caliber.
Will grill him hard on steel and paper this winter...

Hopin' by this time next year...the coyote population will be sufferin'.
It's a nice rifle - one any boy would be proud to own, especially his first one. Give him my congratulations!

Good selection on the chambering for a young lad/lassie.
Thinkin' that since he's too young to hunt deer this year he might lend it to his Ma to help break her ugly shotgun totin' habit.

Could help to convince her of needin' a Short Action for herself.....There's Method in my Madness.
welll done Roy, well done.

Been pondering buying lubbockdaves 308 Kimber for my boy, but am thinking it's too much to spend on him at this stage of the game.

Though if the boy had been born left handed and the Kimber had the bolt on that side it'd be on a one way ticket to AK!
Randy...

Had two reasonable choices today. This one and a matte black, plastic stock, sumthin-or-other 700 in 308...looked more like a fancy jack handle with comfort grips than a rifle. We coulda liked the caliber though....

Had to go Blued and Wood on this...figurin' on Memories Made and the Nostalgia of a first rifle.....

Range Report tomorrow.
WW,

what does a rig like that go for in upstate NY (used rem 700 in 243?)

I'm in Arizona, they seem to be pretty proud of them around here. (ie high priced)

Thanks,

Sycamore
A bud of mine has that exact rifle for his kids...
100 gr. Hornadys over 42.5gs of RL22 is about right...
Glad you got the 243.....
I've slept on that couch <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />...
Bart
Fairly proud here too...though I'm thinkin' good of my hagglin'...

Prices are likely to climb for a while as a fair chunk of this area just became Rifle Country...until the novelty wears off.
Think he'll need to tote it too Texas...next year?

Is 12 old enough...if he's passed the safety course?
Congrats on the rifle. It must be pretty cool for a lot of folks that they can now carry a rifle. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Excellent! J- must be tickled to death..a new rifle and not even Christmas! IMO he is very deserving and will probably be scary good with it. Glad it worked out for both of you.
Bill....

Had I been solo, woulda stopped by for coffee...

But, I had all three Lil' Heathens with me.....they'da drove your dog crazy insane....

BTW...did swing through and secure permission from an old pard in an old haunt just over the Allegany Co. Border. Not a bad drive for you. Big Farm bordering stateland in the back...the city boys can't/don't huff and puff that far back in, making that public land prime.

Gonna spend a couple days there myself, you're welcome to join in....
Normally, I would say you should have stopped. It takes more kids than you have, to harsh my mellow, and the dog would have loved to see John again. But I was not around, had an invite to do some downrigging on Lake Ontario. I was hoping to catch a big salmon ...no luck..the fish were there but the bite was off. Got home last night. Was there a gunshow hereabouts that escaped my radar?

My plan for gun season is to fill a doe tag early, provided the opportunity, thereby saving my bucktag for use in Allegany Co. I will have all the first week and weekends to hunt. Let me know when you plan to be there..will join you.
I knew you had been looking forward to the day of getting your son his first rifle.Good on ya' Roy and your son. You now know though that he will spend the rest of YOUR days trying to outdo his old man. Makes for great future memories if you ask me.I see the hunter safety education course in your very near future.
No gunshow, just schemed a plan to get my rebarreled 700 back from the boyz in Arkport...among other things.

Plannin' on hittin' the farm for a couple days after Thanksgiving, probably that Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday...during a seven day stretch I've been parolled from work....I mean off on vacation.

Gotta be back home on the 27th for a three day run at the PA opener.......
Isaac....

Thinkin' there's far worse things I could do with my time and money...

Keepin' him in guns and ammo and range time is a high ambition. Lovin' it...
There's still much land down here in your old state of Va that I could put you and your son on--Consider the invitation open. Our 2 week muzzleloader season before rifle falls right in the rut. Are muzzleloaders of interest in your state? Rifle here starts the week of Thanksgiving as you might remember and runs till the first few days of January. keep that in your thoughts in case you and your people find yourself on a road trip yo your old stomping grounds. Bob
I've hunted a bunch down around West Point, Gloucester, Mathews and Saluda, north of Williamsburg with the dogs. Lived and hunted though in the south west..Pulaski, Carroll, Montgomery and Floyd Counties. A little bit in Giles County....

Would be a treat to hunt in Northern Va so I appreciate the offer.

The boy was pizzed when we moved cause he knew he could kill deer in Va a lot sooner than he can here. He can't hunt deer with this rifle until he's 16. That sucks but he's got lottsa practice time to get good whackin' other stuff. I'd like to get him other places that will allow him to hunt deer between 12 and 16...gonna have to look into it.....
To add...on the muzzleloader thing...

I'm doin' my best to introduce the virtues of an early muzzleloader season to these folks. We've a late ML season which I dig cause it's way cold/snowy and way not crowded in the woods.

ML's seem to be just a way for a few to extend their season....
Wow, now I'm mad at myself for not staying on last nite!! Excellent job Roy!! Tell Jon that I expect he'll be cutting the X verrry quickly! How do ya figger to get him out of the woods now????
Roy--I'm sure your aware and Know your son can rifle hunt in Va as long as he is accompanied by a licensed adult hunter. Just FYI.

Your littlest one can hunt in Texas as long as she's with you...
Texas ain't so restrictive when it comes to hunting... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />..
Bart
Now that's what I'm talkin' about...

Road trip anyone..?

Got a range report to make as soon as I upload the pics.

It was magical......
Excellent!

I'll let the pics speak for themselves, gotta say it was a good day....

40 empty hulls and a big grin on his face...all I did was halfazz bore sight it, fired one hit the paper shot, turned dials, fired another shot and a confirmation shot. Then fired a five shot group to see what it could do....

Turned him loose with the remainder of ammo....

The kid was calling his shots on the water jugs and empty spray cans...Kool.

Looks like he's havin' a little trouble not smilin' for that pic. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> That looks to be one happy young man, and probably a proud daddy too. Shootin' like that might just get the job done.

Bring that young man and his rifle on down here to Texas. We don't have age restrictions here as long as he is with you and we have lots of deer that need killing <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

mtnman1....

He's got this thing about shootin' the Campfire Face as best he can...

Can't figure where he gets that...(grin)

I am mighty proud of this lad...no doubt about it.

Droptine...

I've heard rumors of that...

Bart is determined to get us down there next year...he almost got it done this year.

The boy and I are lookin' forward to it....
Posted By: fish30ought6 Re: Range Report...... - 10/02/06
i'm thinking that'll do for a rifle.
and that boy has a major pair of eyebrows, to boot.
Posted By: wildswalker Re: Range Report...... - 10/02/06
I am kinda jealous of the rifle...

And his looks........

Heck, you other guys ('ceptin' Bart and Southern Tier) haven't had the pleasure of meeting Jon or Matt. Those guys are a pleasure to hang out with in the woods! Roy is doing one helluva job!!
