My bud found a good sized dent in his truck and this bullet laying on the ground beside it. He lives in OK. He said it's a good size bullet like a 45. looking at it in relation to his finger, I have to agree. I asked if it were an HP, but haven't heard back.

The cannelure and exposed lead speak to a 44 magnum or 45-70 bullet. The amount of bullet south of the cannelure suggests heavy for caliber.

Looks 44 mag to me.

300gr...?

I don't know about the bullet but if it hit his pickup and didn't flatten any more than that, I'd say it had been in the air for a long way.

.44 mag most likely from a different zip code.
Posted By: rockinbbar Re: ID This Bullet - 12/12/19
Looks like it was fired out of a Marlin MicroGroove barrel too.
Posted By: scoony Re: ID This Bullet - 12/12/19
looks like Hornady XTP pistol bullet.
Posted By: Seafire Re: ID This Bullet - 12/12/19
my take... Speer Gold Dot, out of a 44 Mag or 444 Marlin, that had traveled a ways before hitting his truck...

I shoot a lot of XTP and don't think it is that.. but then I could be wrong...stranger things have been known to happen....

Maybe not an XTP, but it looks like the Hornady bullets I load for my 444.

265gr.

Of all bullet makers, the shape north of the cannelure most closely resembles Speer.

It looks like a 44 mag bullet to me and like was said it come from a long ways.

Mostly spent.

Yes.

After looking, it appears to be a .429 Speer 270gr soft point.

Fired from a Marlin rifle.

Now, to fingerprint it and send the azzwhole a bill for the dent! laugh

Did you measure it & weigh it?
Posted By: kennyd Re: ID This Bullet - 12/12/19
Someone could measure it ( any machine shop or ) and reloader could weigh it
Hard part is finding shooter

Most reloaders will have calipers.

Please show us all a picture of a Hornady XTP bullet that matches that... ?

Sure looks like a Speer to my untrained eyes...

My best guess without putting a set of calipers to it, 240grn speer .429.

The ratio of that 240g bullet looks closer to 45/55 above/below cannelure The one my bud found has appreciably more below the cannelure.

If we accept that it's a Speer, does that tell us it was a handload? I am not aware of Speer hunting bullets being used in any factory ammo.

As others have said, fired from a long way off.
Posted By: Tyrone Re: ID This Bullet - 12/12/19
This thread is useless without pictures measurements. laugh

Probably zipped thru some 29 lbs belly of a milk spotted fawn 1/2 mile away and rainbow trajectoried right at the spot. Lucky find.
From the barrel of a 'minty' Ruger 44 deerfield. Hypothetical fawn ran off 180 yards and died in a ravine laugh

Renegade50 parked us one 0-Dark-30 morning on a field edge, I'm checking my boot laces with a flash light and found the Indian version of your friend's bullet.

Yup, but still would suck getting hit with it.
