I need to find picks of my personal best deer and elk...coyote, Bobcat, Antelope....

BUT I’ll start with my Beaver shot

Note - if you are trying to sneak up on a Beaver, it’s better to do it with your shoes off.

Thanks nyrifleman,

You been around here long enough to remember the days when these threads were dominated by Alaskans.
The photo content in those days made opening a new thread like viewing a National Geographic magazine that was dedicated to hunting, fishing and drinking beer. It attracted big game hunters from around the globe..

Who was the member that took us by photo posts step by step when he built the amazing cabin on that killer Alaskan river?

I can't hold a candle to the real sportsmen here. This is a walleye I caught a couple of years back, it only took me 69 years to

do it. Then my wife caught a bigger one a year later. The fish is still at the taxidermist shop. [Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

It was always a special hunt of mine. It was my fathers first buck.

He'd come to Montana's Bob Marshall Wilderness with me for his first western hunt.
I had a great location picked out and we hit it hard the first morning after he'd arrived at my camp and nothing was happening, we couldn't drum up a living thing on my favorite mule deer mountain side.
I was pretty put out and at a loss of what to do next when we stopped for lunch. We both took a after lunch nap right there on that hillside and when I woke up those two bucks were standing 40 yards away from us.
They'd wandered in after we fell asleep, they sorta found us.

I woke dad and we got positioned and dropped them both.
After we shot, 7 more bucks scattered, all within a 100 yards of us but we'd failed to see them until they were on the move. The two we had taken were about mid sized of the 9 bucks.
One was a huge buck with enormous drop tines that I'd been chasing for the last couple seasons there.
I'd had a close encounter with him the previous year and once again had to watch him stroll away.

Plenty of would'a, could'a, should'of's but in the end we were happy being able to get the two side by side that we did for the photos.

I took the smaller taller odd ball 3x3, his bases (H-1) measured just under 6" but he just had one set of forks. Dads was a tad lighter on the bases but a classic 4x4 pushing bur points here and there.

Dad was carrying his 7mm that day and I would have had a 300 win mag. No long range shots or anything special just some good father son time..

I actually used a Valmet 412 with the 9,3X74R barrel. I was bird hunting at the time, or I'd have used the 9,3/9,3 barrel set.

Don't be like that. Everyone has a different idea of what fun is, they have different starting points and endings. I see guys on safari, that's awesome. I have no interest in that because if I'm going to be raped, murdered and then raped again its gonna happen right here in America. Guys shoot elk, sheep and goats in beautiful country and have wonderful stories and amazing pictures. That's great but I've walked 20 miles on flat ground and it wasn't fun at all, let alone going uphill both ways. Enjoy the stories that others tell but they aren't the only stories.

STXhunter looks a lot like Freddie Mercury.

There was a time I could have done those things and now I wish I had taken off work more and spent the money rather than busting my ass, saving and trying to get ahead.

I always wanted a sheep, caribou, and big bear. I wish I had gotten some heads like those.

Didn't shoot these guys, just enjoyed watching them in the desert 30 miles or so Northeast of Las Vegas.

They call em the Big Bad Wolf for a reason.

How much did that critter weigh?
A real big wolf will go 125 - 130 lbs.
The biggest recorded weight by Yellowstone biologists was 146 lbs with a full belly of meat.
A trapper friend in Alaska has killed hundreds and has the same thoughts.

Here is the largest fish (freshwater) that I know of beyond the Sturgeon..

I get these in the Ozark River (Missouri) each year, they are plankton eaters so you have to snag them.
I use a trolling method where I troll the river channel with 4 trolling lines and the other guys pull in the fish, this one is only about 50lbs, they get up to 100 lbs.

They don’t have bones, they have cartridge like a shark, and taste a lot like swordfish.
Watching a guy haul in a big hog spoonbill (paddlefish) is a lot like watching someone try to real in a barn door.

By the way, do you have any idea how many bears Bill Byle killed with his 22/250?
Posted By: krp Re: Personal Best picture thread - 12/22/19
My personal best Mule deer I killed was my first, I was with my best friend who is still my best friend, we were hunting the Tonto, he missed a monster the day before with a savage 300 open sights, I killed one the next morning with a savage 99 in 308 with a redfield 4x scope, running full out on a lower ridge about 250 yds on my hind feet, spined him, drt right there. First deer for either of us, his dad showed up in camp when we had got back, we packed it out whole wanting to hang it and show it off, it was a bitch with a canyon between us and the jeep. His dad made a big deal of it, this from a man that killed big bucks in the Kaibab back when tags were bought at the sports store and good for state wide. Back then pictures weren't taken and after butchering the heads were tossed out by the corrals for the dogs to haul off and chew on in the citrus groves. Some of the heads those oldtimers would toss away from the Kaibab would make todays trophy hunting elites cry, they were gnarly and huge. My buck was big, I had bragging rights that year... and it ate well... the memory is enough.

There is a good bit that can be learned from the images this thread has collected.

One is, some of the members here have bagged some amazing trophy's over their life times.

A big thing is learning what makes an image a great image and there are some good examples here to take note of.

You only get the chance once to get these photos, seize the moment, take your time and pay close attention to the composure of the images posted here and the ones you take.

There are key things that turn what could have ended up being just another hunting photo into an amazing image.

It can take some time to set the stage for images once an animal is down.

I've never seen blood add quality to a hunting photo, I kick it out, cover it up or whatever it takes to be sure it doesn't show.
I take photos before I gut, a collapsed body makes an animal look smaller and dead...
If a tongue is dangling out of the mouth and I can't stuff it back in before the photos, I cut it off.

Let the animal take center stage.
A hunter positioning himself low and behind a downed animal seems to complement an image well.
Just don't get so far behind them that you are obviously stretching out to hold a horn.

Obviously if there is a awesome scenic view to be had get to where it shows well, anything is fair, you can move and manipulate an animal if you need to in order to show you were on that incredible ridge or mountain top.

Even in thick cover you need to look around and see what makes the best background, the image should tell the story of the hunt, if you were in thick schit, let it show.... I've knocked a little brush outta the way between the camera and the animal so I could back off enough to gather more background.

It'd be nice to hear a few tips from some of you guys...you know who you are, you guys didn't get all those awesome photos by chance...
My best shot on a critter... quartering away, 200 yards, running flat out. (that's the exit)

Yep, Btdt. Grew up without money to waste on cameras or developing for pics- old school. A box of 30-30 was designed to last several years. Cameras were for family gatherings.

I thank God for cell phones now and wish we would have had them back then. In college at UT Austin in the Darrel Royal days there was a little gas station a hunter had with a few old B&W fuzzy picks on the wall of 40 inch bucks which resembled elk. Iirc from Colorado in the good old days.
That was a toad striper, Jaguartx. I believe you've got me beat in the big striper category.

Once went to a deer hunting seminar and one of the classes was how to take quality photos of harvested game. He said to always stuff the tongue back in, try to avoid (or minimize) blood, and he had these little contact lenses for deer eyeballs so they don't look so glazed over.

Thanks. Been pretty easy really. They seem to intimidate.
Plus they all know how to shoot LOL
That is a hell of a picture - classic in black & white.

I’ve been waiting to see a picture of your Bull Saddle sore...

If you shoot a smaller one you won’t have to mount it so far down on the wall like that !!

Great Bull !!

On the sixth day god created animals, he asked ingwe, what'a you think... how about sprinkling more horned and hoofed in africa and get rid of that one horned horse thing... so it was spoken and so it was done... and unicorns were eliminated to myth, except everything my grandaughter owns has to have one on it.

I am a real dinosaur..... how do you easily post a picture?
Remember , I am no good at this. Is there a real simplified method?
Yeah definitely, a boomer, folks

Yes, instead of the gallery here, register and log into Imgur.com.

Top of screen it says "New Post"
Select that.
Then it will say "Browse Computer"
Select that.

Go to your photos and open the one you want by selecting "open" on the bottom right of the photo.
The photo will download. Then on the top right of the photo after it is loaded , it will show " Links" .Click on that and select the one that says Forums by clicking on the "Open" box.

Go back to 24 hour campfire in the forum you want to post it and select where you want to enter the photo and use the"control V command. Ctrl"is on the bottom left of your key board. Use it and V at the same time.

You will get . When you "Post Reply" the photo will be shown.

Those non-typical growths are pretty interesting. Great bull for a mount.

Thanks Alamosa. The brisket is a tad over 2 ft from the floor and the top tine is about 3" from the 8 ft ceiling. This was a Unit 201 bull>if counting the non-typical growth near the skull he is a 7x8

2019 season my boy was 4 and had just started making hunts with me and my ol man. I got “him” a SS model 7 260 rem. The pic with the 2 deer he got both with one shot. The yearling was behind the doe feeding and my ol man was so excited he didn’t notice. The got the crosshairs lined up and boom. One dropped the other ran 30 yards. That was his first deer(s), I was on the oil rigs and missed it. The solo deer pic we took 2 weeks ago, little horn spike came out about 20 yards from us. I like to never got that rifle set up for him. We use a Iscope device for him, and I forgot to video the shot. But deer went about 25 yards and expired. I’m sure we will take many more years to come but these will always stick out the most.
