As a place to live, the Congo rates right up there with Haiti and Rwanda. They've been in a series of civil wars for decades. More than 5 million people have died in the last 20 years between the fighting, starvation, and disease. The latest round of war comes from several Muslim factions who want a lot more control than their numbers justify. If you can't defend yourself, you'll die...and there's a good chance you'll die anyway.

Flashback to Ghana ca. 1982.
After the coup Flight Lt. JJ Rawlings, now running the country, said the Army always had too much power because they were the only ones with firearms. So he initiated a civilian firearms training program so that more than just the army would know how to use guns.
