I’m thinking of rechambering my Roger M77 to a short 30 cal but not sure what my options are. Roger tells me my 7.62x39/barrel is .308, not .311 but I’ll have to confirm first. Would like a 300 Blackout but chamber is too long to “clean up”. Any ideas?
Sell it and buy what you want.
Leave it alone and shoot more pigs.

Yup, throwing good money after bad.

Sell what you don't want - $500
Buy what you do want- $500
Net Loss $O
Work involved- minimal
Rebore/rechamber a break even deal? Uh, no.
For a handloader a 300 Savage in a short bolt action is a neat set up. Aren't the Ruger short action magazines around 3" as well? That could be very interesting with modern VLD bullets seated out. I know the Berger 168 gr. VLD works great for my 700 Classic.
Sell it and buy what you want.
And if you are interested in accuracy, get something other than a Ruger.
Not having any idea how long the action is, how about a 30 Grendel? Just a clean-up of the shoulder area basically.
And you wouldn't have to open up the boltface like with a .473" head cartridge.

Ain't that the truth, I only had one that shot worth a damn, they musta built that one on Friday. 😁 I finally quit trying.
keep the 7.62x39 and buy something else.
7.62 rim diameter (bolt geometry) is not compatible with the common .473" found on most .30 cal cartridges. Not saying it can't be done, just not as simple as one might thing at first blush. The spec diameter for the Rooskie case is .447 -.010

The Ruger 77 I had was .311.
Trade up to a SKS. You already have ammo.
You could be the first to have a 7.62x39 AI.
M77 short actions should all be the same length. May have to buy a different mag box and open the bolt face but if you are willing to do that any short 30 cal ought to work. M77 are a but heavy but other than that they are a solid action. On the other hand in spite of the negative comments that is a fairly desirable rifle in 7.62x 39. Check Cast boolits site. several folks over there love them.

This is the only course of action that makes any sense.

You beat me to it. Actually the 100 yard 5 shot group record is held by this caliber. It was built on 6.5 Grendel brass. His 5 shots measured .0077.
Leave it alone or sell it.
You've got a bolt-face issue as well. You could REBARREL to a six or six five Grendel keeping the bolt.
But the 7.62 is a good cartridge when handloaded, especially if you have a 308 barrel and all those good bullets.

Sell the Roger and buy a Ruger.
Turd polish is expensive these days. May have been forever.. I try to avoid it.
Your Ruger will bring a premium in that chambering. As others have mentioned, sell it and buy what you want.
The rifle is nothing fancy, Zytel stockede with a Timbey trigger and Leupold 6x but it has been my “beater” on the ATV when I had the farm in GA. Used mostly for deer by my sons with shots limited to 100 yards. Actually quite accurate but underpowered for 150 + yards in my opinion. Has been a great little rifle but could use it more if it had a bit more range.
It’s actually a nice little rifle. My only non Win 70
I’ve opened up both pieces in the past not really a problem more to do with chamber etc. thank you
I like my 7.62x39!
It's a stone cold killer!
125gr soft point. 2500fps.
Are you CERTAIN it's 308 and not 311?
I don't care what Roger or Ruger told you
As others have said, you are trying to solve the problem the hard way. Just get another rifle in the chambering you want. Wont be much more expensive than what you are trying to do there.
Economically a very poor idea to modify a "premium" rifle. You not only lose the premium but cut to less than what a non-modified non-premium rifle would bring. It's a double hit, in other words. Best option is to just buy another rifle and have both. Next best is to take the premium profit and buy a replacement rifle with some boot left over.
No, I’m not certain but that’s the first thing I will check.
I totally agree but if it’s as simple as opening up the bolt face and cutting a new chamber I could have a 308 on the cheap. I doubt I will do it but I am curious of my options
If you want to sell the rifle PM me with the price. I might be able to help. Thanks, and Be Well, Rustyzipper.
