A shack, a dream, near by, far away. Its cabin fever season.
I am gonna have one in the back yard some day.
Have plans Big Jim?
My boys and I took an old derelict garage, put a new roof on it, added a lean-to, upgraded to 100 amp, insulated, paneled with osb, added two steel entry doors and four windows, siding and a furnace/ac over the past 15 years on my little 45 acre patch of timber. Great getaway and deer camp. Probably under 7k in the cabin total. It can be done.
It's all about enjoying what you have. A slice of personal heaven.
Built a pole barn in 2017 and then finished out the inside in 2018.....2bed 1 bath small kitchen and den.

Got about 25-30k in it
Pictures?
I just got this place. Close on 28 Feb. Comes with 88 acres. Trails throughout. Cedar and hardwoods mix. 600 acres of public land to my west with a stream. 40 mins from house. Excellent hunting. Deer, turkey, wolf and moose frequent the area.

That looks super nice ras.
RAS--now that's a cabin!
I've thought an old school bus on blocks, a stovepipe through the roof, converted to a lakeside cabin would be cool.

Hells yeah! Happy for ya!
What happened to the Cabin forum? There’s at least a half dozen worthless forums that could be dumped...

Trying to buy 30 acres adjacent to my property to build a retirement home on. Keep this one as a weekly rental/guest house for the kids/parents to visit. Looking at some options now to make moving back there a reality earlier than I'd hoped/planned. An hour commute each way/day would be the penalty which more and more seems like a small trade-off.

I sold my 3800 sq ft log home in the mountains a few months ago

I personally would not do a log home again

Yes sir.

Since I have no carpentry skills, I have been looking at those premade sheds you see on the side of the road.

One in particular has a porch on it.

A person could make a fine cabin/storage shed out of that like a damn.

Have a stove and a cook stove.

It would be great. Keep my canning stuff out there, a my second fridge and a freezer.

My reloading stuff and what not. Nice twin bed and some good windows to look out of.

Right out back. I could come in for so of my meals and to take a bath once in a while.

It would be nice.

My kinda place.
A friend of mine had a long term forest svc lease on a lakefront lot. He put up a roof on poles and bought a 30' camp trailer to park under it. He had access to power and water. He put in a septic himself. He'd pull the camper home (about 120 miles) for the winter so he could do repairs if needed and it wouldn't be buried in snow that could leak through the siding as it melted. They used it for many years before he got too old and sold it.
He said he learned one thing the hard way. Don't open the black water drain valve and leave it open. The liquid drains out and the solids set up so they won't come out. Keep it closed and dump it maybe once a week or as needed. He said the 1st and only time he left it open, he had to fill it with water and pull it down the road for 50 miles to shake everything loose.

Whatever would you do with yourself if you no longer had to pass out on the driveway?? laugh
I’ve had several cabins I’ve built on deer leases I’ve been on. I prefer that over a camp trailer.

Wowzers

One cabin wasn't enough for me, so I built two of 'em.

The new living room. We burn the wood stove a lot.

Original living room. Can't beat a log cabin at Christmas.
That looks great. Any inside pictures?
I got 225 acres with a 48Lx24Wx14H roof built and a 44' camper with 2 slideouts parked under it. Well, septic and 100 amp electric service. Also a 55gallon barrel for empty beer cans just outside the back door! Yes we empty it every spring.I
We call the place "The Antler Club"
Yes Rick we need a cabin forum
Was an early desire here, but given the remoteness of our country, theft and vandalism are perpetual issues. The days of leaving cabins and line shacks open and appointed with expectations of respectful use are long gone.
Looked forward to it for decades. Retirement came and now live in a cabin in 100 acres of woods and can not think of anything that would make me leave it. Tis a wonderful thing, as shaky as it appears sometimes, that we live in a country where itcan still be done if you want it bad enough.

Yeah! What's with these dumb "outside" pics of the wood stove and the Christmas tree??!
I saw that, a bit late. It's very nice.
hahaha

I'm just yanking your chain Richard! smile
Log walls have this romance.
Inside pic. Two bedrooms below and loft above with two beds. To the left is our "indoor outhouse". Dressed up the bathroom to look like an outhouse. Did everything but the insulation (I hate the [bleep]) and lay the foundation. Built the cabinets, electrical, plumbing, all wood work etc...

That is so frickin sweet!
The best thing is to share the place with family, and friends.
My place in Southwest Virginia and visitors

Never did lock the house out at Drewsey but that was years ago

Jim, I like your idea of a Cabin.

Some of these folks have different ideas of what a "cabin" is.

Some of them look like they brought the maid from the other thread.

Geno

PS next time you pass out in the driveway be sure to pull up your pants first after peeing. My bro didn't, wish it had happened after cells phones came around, we'd have proof.

And "firewood"!
I am certifiable cabin crazy. My brother and I bought this cabin and 100 acres in the backwaters of the Wisconsin River. A duck hunters paradise and some great deer hunting.

We have two and I can hardly believe it as I type this.

One only accessible via boat in summer or snowmachine in winter. It’s a good story how we acquired it. Got it in ‘02, and man has it had a positive impact on our lives, particularly our kids.

Prolly the best investment we ever made, not in $$ but in quality of life and love for our family.

Then about 5-6 years ago, my wife told me she wanted to build a cabin on the lake where her grandparents raised 13 children, or the best part of that group as a few died pretty young.

I was busy starting up a new biz, and literally had nada to do with it, she hired her brother to clear the lot, had the groundwork and pad put in, hired the guys to build the 2 story log cabin. I never even saw the place till it was almost completed. Pretty proud of my lil gal for getting it done. I don’t even know what it cost, guessing around 50k all in. But doesn’t matter worth every penny she spent.

It overlooks a lake that teems with waterfowl. No fish as it’s too shallow and not creek or spring fed. 40 mile air uses it as their float pond. My wife went to school with Leif & Crystal, owners of 40 mile

Both places have screened in porches where we seem to spend the majority of our time.

Sometimes I have to pinch myself at our good fortune.

We truly have been blessed
Closest we've got is a 38' camper in a campground. We can and do leave it there year 'round. Front bedroom has 4 single beds so kids can have friends over. Our bedroom is @ opposite end so we can sleep. (grin) We have septic hooked up permanently. Rural water with excellent pressure from ~May 1 until ~Mid Oct. 50 Amp electrical. Ours faces North and I have a 24'x12' covered deck off the front. Full size fridge on the deck for beer, leeches, and worms.

Oodles of kids in the campground. The kids fish, play at the playground, drive golf carts, SxS, ATV's, ride bikes, swim, all the things kids should do. Everyone keeps a good supply of hot-dogs. popsicles, and S'More making materials. You just feed the kids that show up with your own, and, you know your's are taken care of should they decide to have lunch elsewhere with their friends.

It's not at all private, we don't own the property, and once the snow flies, there is no access as they don't plow the roads. Even if they did, there's no electricity and no water. However, at this point in our lives, our family loves it.
If anyone is watching Building Alaska on the DIY network, we have some friends that are building a grain bin style cabin and it came out pretty good but he did have some challenges along the way. Here's a picture of our remote cabin that we had built almost 2 years ago, it came out way better than we could have ever hoped.
