A car wasnt church going material in the day without at least two in vehicle lighters and 5 ashtrays. .

When did they quit putting them in cars? My '08 Dodge pickup has one but my '04 minivan doesn't.
Posted By: navlav8r Re: What's this? - 04/02/20
Yep, cigarette lighter. Never had the need to use one but I recognize the little coil.
Posted By: Jim_Conrad Re: What's this? - 04/02/20
The thing I used to make round, interesting burn marks all over the dash.

They still put the receptacle in the vehicles. It's that hole where you put an adapter for USB charging chords for your cell phone. They just don't provide the male lighter any longer.

And buying a pack from the machine at the bar for my uncle....

I dont think I was even ten.

Ive bought more cigs than Ive ever smoked, thats for sure.

My brother in law was 14,15- rode dirt bike up the country store. Said he needed pack of marlboros for his daddy.

Old woman shot him down, says boy, your pop smokes camels.

My Dad was so proud that his 730 JD had one of those. He didn’t have to fight with a match or lighter while he was in the field.

He gots greedy...
Posted By: HawkI Re: What's this? - 04/02/20
My other grandpa had a perpetual carton of Salems on his dash at all times.

Zippos all over the place, big ass ashtray tower next to the recliner and one next to the "Davenport"....

My mother was the eldest child, my uncle was the youngest. Mom told a story about pulling out the lighter and it wasn’t glowing red. She didn’t know if it was hot so tested it on younger brother sitting on the seat beside her. Unc got a nice round branding scar in the middle of his thigh.

There's one in this scene, for a bit. Might still be on a street in Chicago still:

The previous one provides context for this scene:

My maternal grandfather was a smoker. He died thirty-eight years ago today drowning in flemm.

Oh, I was surprised to see one of them in a fairly late model CAT, iirc. They're handier than chit.

Damn boomer.

Most of those are wired with about an 18 ga wire. You can buy a battery trickle charger that's supposed to plug into one to charge the battery. How many amps can you stuff through 18 ga before it all melts down? Not all of those are live when they key's off.

It goes in that hole in your car where the old fashioned (non ISB) phone charger goes.
Posted By: TheBigSky Re: What's this? - 04/02/20
Spotlight powerport plug. When you listen to the second hand smoke crusaders today it's surprising any of us survived our youth. I never gave a second thought when we six kids were in the car with mom or dad and there was a constant "fog" of cigarette smoke. Heck, my parents had large families. For holiday get togethers there were always a dozen or more adults/late teens smoking all at once, playing cards, watching football, reminiscing while all drinking beer or booze. How did our society survive all of that sin?

I bought the male counter part and stuffed it in the lighter hole in my new truck, the fuse blew right away.

I upped the fuse size and figured I had it licked until the light weight wiring they used started to smoke and melt.
I guess they matched the wire size to that fuse.....oh well.....
