When did they quit putting them in cars? My '08 Dodge pickup has one but my '04 minivan doesn't.
They still put the receptacle in the vehicles. It's that hole where you put an adapter for USB charging chords for your cell phone. They just don't provide the male lighter any longer.
My mother was the eldest child, my uncle was the youngest. Mom told a story about pulling out the lighter and it wasn’t glowing red. She didn’t know if it was hot so tested it on younger brother sitting on the seat beside her. Unc got a nice round branding scar in the middle of his thigh.
Most of those are wired with about an 18 ga wire. You can buy a battery trickle charger that's supposed to plug into one to charge the battery. How many amps can you stuff through 18 ga before it all melts down? Not all of those are live when they key's off.

Spotlight powerport plug. When you listen to the second hand smoke crusaders today it's surprising any of us survived our youth. I never gave a second thought when we six kids were in the car with mom or dad and there was a constant "fog" of cigarette smoke. Heck, my parents had large families. For holiday get togethers there were always a dozen or more adults/late teens smoking all at once, playing cards, watching football, reminiscing while all drinking beer or booze. How did our society survive all of that sin?

Cheap bastards.
I bought the male counter part and stuffed it in the lighter hole in my new truck, the fuse blew right away.
I upped the fuse size and figured I had it licked until the light weight wiring they used started to smoke and melt. I guess they matched the wire size to that fuse.....oh well.....
