Ex-NFL kicker Tom Dempsey lost the game at age 73 in New Orleans. He held the record for the NFL's longest field goal at 63 yards for many years. He was born without toes on his right foot and wore a special shoe to kick. It got a lot of controversy that it gave him an unfair advantage but the NFL allowed it.
I remember reading about his short square kicking shoe. The sports writer noted there was no rush for the other kickers to have toes cut off.

Great stuff.
I believe that Tom was suffering dementia also which is why he was in the nursing home to begin with.
I was watching live when he made that field goal. Unbelievable.
He was missing one hand to iirc.
That was when the NFL was, the NFL.

It was almost unbelievable.

It was the only 3 points that the Saints scored in the whole season.

Not the whole hand but he was missing some fingers. Birth defect.
Sad, another one bites the dust.
I was there in Tulane stadium when he made the kick.As a little boy, it was hard to see because everyone was standing up. RIP Tom.

We need a constant in this world and the Lions provide it!

Yeah, but that allowed them to get Archie Manning in the first round the next year. smile
He and other NFL guys, came to Clark hospital in the Philippines when I was there in 1972. Just in and out but I will never forget them taking the time to come visit the soldiers, sailors, airmen who were there. This was at a time when so many were cussing us. NOTE: I was there for a knee problem and was not wounded in Viet Nam. Many of the guys were. Seeing those guys with no leg/legs, etc.. made me know just how unimportant my knee problems were. That thought has carried with me the rest of my life. No matter what your problem, there are folks whose issues make yours insignificant.

lol, yeah, I think you are right. IIRC, the kick did just barely clear the bar. but, a record at the time.

And donโ€™t forget that the Lions got beat, that is a wonderful thing. They havenโ€™t won a championship in over 60 years. You wouldnโ€™t want to snap this streak!

Dempsey's record was tied a couple times before it was broken. The current record is only 1 yd farther, 64 yds.
