No agreement as to what it means; a lazy way to avoid having to prove your argument.
If he had heeded the common sense of the time holding that the world was flat, Columbus never would have made his voyage. The Wright brothers never would have attempted their flight, because common sense said that man would never fly. Many other examples throughout history.
Heard from a WAPO talking head on Chicken Noodle News (cnn).
“We’re now into an area and point in time whereby normal, ordinary Neologisms cannot adequately describe the current situation nor can they predict the future.”
If I’m not mistaken, a neologism is like:
Circumvent: An opening in the front of a Jewish man’s boxer shorts.
Or
Cashstration: What happens to a man after a divorce.
We are all in this together, so whenever you are ready to send it, just put the tip in and the pill will shoot like a laser and hit like a hammer of Thor, after all it is a 6.5 creedmore and it will drive tacks and shoot a half inch all day long as long as you do your part and stay sheltered in place to flatten the curve and if you’re not above the law the cure is worse than the disease because after all, it is the new normal when we are fast approaching the most important election of our lifetime but if you are ready to take it to the next level, gfy and do it for the kids because in these trying times that is not who we are!!!!
Yep - stupid, "feel good" nonsensical saying. Different levels of "being in it all together" eg those in ICU, and those not. Those employed and those not.
A bit like saying we can all collectively enjoy our uniqueness.
Another phrase that will never go away, and isn't COVID related, but irritates me is part of Winston Churchill's WWII speech "...we will fight them on the beaches..". Winston never fought them on the beaches - he directed others to do that for him. I don't see why he was so popular after the mess he made of Gallipoli and the Dardanelles in WWI and all the lives he wasted.
How about "investigation"? Most blurt that out without a thought as to what it involves. "We demand an investigation"!
To conduct a proper investigation requires a special set of skills that are acquired through training. It isn't taught in law school, in fact there are special courses available for lawyers who want to become investigators.
It takes more than just "common sense", and it damned sure doesn't mean someone sitting on a high dais with a name plate that says "Senator" asking a bunch of grandstanding badgering questions, and calling it an "investigation".
How about a foreign entity investigating an American? Are there personnel thoroughly familiar with the English language and American culture? How do they gain access to the necessary info sources from a remote foreign location, e.g. Ukraine?
