Thread will be a work in progress type of thing. Spent about 3 hours today on the forearm Still lot to do on the forearm. It has 11 birdseyes in it . Which should pop pretty good when refinished. Opened up the checkering outline . Gotta hit the outline with some 120 grit get out cutting stuff. Define the valley and angles little better
Strip it after I get jiggy on the butt stock tommorow
Object of the project is refinish the stock and contour smooth all these sharp factory angles This is what the shotgun looked like before the start of the project.
I dont give a fugg what he has to say about it or my technique. Dont even start man. I'm a general forumite...
Post up schit on here some might enjoy looking at.
Pics or it never happened... firm beleiver...... Co founder with you. LOL!!! Aint seen a one of his since I been a member on here. LMFAO!!! I'm being nice and it's hard at times.
All I have ever asked was for a friend to pay for the stuff needed to do the project. Turn down offers for paid work. Wont do it,,, specially not face to face. I'm uncomfortable with it. Dont wanta be known for schitt work via shipping.
And I sure as fugg wont let a project go back with my OCD issue I have. I have restarted projects from scratch cause of OCD. Lol!! You know that.
Dave what are you smoking man??? Lol!!! These are relatively new guns like 10 or 12 years on the market. IIRC.
sold my winchester 1400 mkII to have more modern design gun to disassembly and clean and parts availability.
I have owned alot of 835,s 2 935,s 1 mossberg 500 rifled slug a loooong time ago. This is my second 930 The black walnut has alot of character waiting to come out Got a good deal on it at a pawnshop.
That factory finish was bad man. That pic is deceiving. Runs and glaciering sagging on it in places. I dont know how it got by any QC if they had any at all.
I dont have a single walnut stocked gun with a factory finish on it.
Wiping cloth tru oil 50 50 cut with mineral spirits finish will go on this. After about 6 penetrating 25 tru oil 75 mineral spirits coats get in it.
Be done with a grain finish like others I have done. When my eye says it's right is when I will know it's done Then about a month of indoor and outdoor curing/ hardening.
This was some fugging tedious work for about 5 hours back in january when I got the gun. Shot a box of shells thru it prior too and afterwards. Big difference in felt recoil.
Fugging mossberg injection molded pad. Look like they got recoil mitagation in em Fugging solid 1/2 to 5/8 ths inch wide band column of hard non giving rubber down the middle of em. Vice grip needle nose, angled toe nail trimmer, dremel with cut off disc, drill bits, rube goldberg rigged up angle exacto blade.

My bad.....
All them years smelling knaug-a-Hyde at the factory messes up my mind.
On the really real.... i shoot a benelli m2. Had it back before LH semis were cool. Trendsetter and what not.
I might go eat dinner their tonight. Start a thread for the haters.

Dude, them are cool!
reminds me of the ones we made out of doubled up bent over wire hangers, paper route rubber bands, and leather pouches. used to have slingshot wars with the neighborhood bros. Turned on their side, a picnic table makes a good hide. Stopped rocks, peach pits, and the occasional "steelie" marble.
That’s a purdy gun Ren. I just had a not so good experience with a mossberg pump that I had scrimped and saved for as a kid. I ended up trading it for an 870 cause the guy wanted a gun that shot 3" shells.
Well, around certain parts using alfalfa camo might work, juniper in others, sagebrush most everywhere, lava rock on the rim-rock areas, and only occasionally tumbleweed.
Black cow camo would work well too. Seems to be a lot f them around.

IIRC Got em down to 200 or 225 Otd.
Pawn shop out in Dover. They had a 24 inch matte in black walnut also. Probably some scumbillie got a dead reletives guns. Let em go for partaaaay money. Just seemed funny 2 930,s with walnut in the place. Speculation on my part mostly.....
Was in their late deer season coming back from stewart state forrest. Went back 2 or 3 weeks later.
Let me trade out forearms. At 1st they was reluctant, but the girl turned a " blind eye". Got the one with a buncha birdseyes in it.

Not a Purdy. Mossberg. World of difference, man...😂
This mornings 2.5 hrs of work / mods on the buttstock. Got rid of the sharp angled lines. Hit the outline on the checkering, opened it up some more. Modified the hump transistion on top of the pistol grip along the comb. It was pretty pronounced before. Modified the heel line and bottom of the pistol grip for installation of a basic black pistol grip cap, which it dont come from mossberg with. Just think it will be a good match with the black recoil pad.
Go to a LGS later today, rat fugg thru his bin of caps with buttstock in hand. Pick out 2 or 3 that catch the eye. Get em home, sand ta fit, predrill screw hole. Probably use a brushed stainless steel flat tip screw.
Look at the hand cheese and grime in those remote control buttons. 😀
Motel 6 lookin chit.
Nah, Motel 6 is a high falutin’ place. They steam clean those. Never know when some vegan milf gonna mix up her sperm smoothie. You know she don’t wash her hands after milkin’ ol’ Buford for his seed.
Not in the plan at all. Have large hands. A 10° spacer plate between the stock and butt pad is being thought of from midsouthshooterssupply down the road. Gun comes up fine, but I think I need just a little bit more of the forward 1/3 rd of the rib to plane out level just a little more.
Shoot it with it and without it once done. 7 bucks well spent Or 7 bucks in the parts box.
Mineral spirits bath / cleaning Rough idea of what It will come out like. Dry up over next couple hours to regular hue. Aint gonna do a diluted staining to match the overall difference. Good to go how it is, appeals to my eye. Be interesting grain and highlights to look at when bored on the dove field... Lol!!
Lack of sunlight sucks... It does look good to me. Do a very very light 320 sand when dry later today. Nother clean with mineral spirits. Let dry overnight. Tape up the checkering Hit it with a tack cloth. Start getting 25/ 75 tru oil and mineral spirits penetration coats to it.
Aint no more machine cut 90° angles. No more blocky look overall. Pistol grip cap area made the factory dont do. Nice clear defined outline around the checkering now. Also gives a better feel in grip. JMO.
I like the rounded and contoured lines way better than the robo machine look it had.
Got a cigg a 2” ash hangin off, while your fanning that rag around with mineral spirits??
LOL!!! Hosed down the area for about 5 mins afterwards. Then smoked one. Let all that Captain Planet run off go where the fugg ever. Rain today . Should eventually make it down slope to the d bag neighbors garden.
Do you get beat up shooting doves with a 12 gauge?
No.
Good recoil pad. Decent weight gun with good pitch on the butt stock recoiling straight into your shoulder properly. Not an issue. Gas guns "absorb" recoil also.
Syn stock light weight guns. Add weight in buttstock like I always have and good pad.
I ran a box thru prior to the pad mod I did. Then ran another after. Big felt difference after when the pad had waaaay more give. Went out back in feb walked about a mile of RR tracks whacking birds. I know, I know the horror of it all and totally illegal whacking precious little birdy,s.... Shot 3 boxes that day lol!!! Lots of feathered carnage. Yotes and coons had a smorgasbord along that stretch of track.
I'm a dik and a bird murderer. Hawks got a pass though. I like hawks.
It was a John J Audubon day. Lots of variety on the wing. Too early in the year for hummers to be around though. LOL!!!
For what ever reason....it seems like a 20 gauge, especially one for "kids" kicks like hell.
There just does not seem to be a way to start a kid with a shotgun....unless they were of monstrous size like me at 6 years old.
Good recoil pad.
Buy a pitch spacer. 1/ 8 th inch at 1st Or maybe 1/ 4 th inch They are slanted and reversible for pos or neg pitch. Neg is rarley needed.
You can loosen up the pad stick 1 or 2 or 3 quarters in top of pad. Shoot it and check for recoil straight into shoulder by observing the person. Then install approx correct thickness pitch spacer after.
Chances are you need positive pitch on it to get the recoil straight into the shoulder instead of bucking up into the cheek bone.
Kids and women also tend to stand straight up into a gun instead of slightly forward into the gun. Why they get bit sometimes also.
It’s looking good Ren. Nice wood, better more pleasing lines. It ought to be a pleasure to gaze at while in the dove fields. Just don’t forget to watch for incoming.
Well, I was referring to incoming doves. Aren’t they dangerous and dive bomb after being shot at? Somehow I see Ren being portrayed by Ben Stiller in the movie version.
I can get off 3 rds pretty fast. LOL!!! Have had idle talk at end of day with people occasionally "You hear that fella on the feild shooting really really fast at times"?
Prep for penetration coats. 25 truoil 75 mineral spirits 3 coats each peice in around 30 mins Brush gets thrown away $1.67 Wood sucks it fast at this point 3 coats is where it is at now
Let em "dry" about 4 hrs Hit em another 3 times with a new brush 6 penetration coats might do it depending on wood density. Forearm and buttstock are of different densities. Might have ta work on one more than the other at times to balance finish. Checkering will dull out more and be around 90% after these intial 6 coats. It will get taped off for other steps with wiping cloth applications and sandings. Then ratio will go to 50/50. The mineral spirits help the finish lay down and evaporate. Which allows thin coats to be apllied Bout 2 to 3 days of drying between most of the rest of the steps I do.
Just my way of doing stuff guys. YMMV with what works for you.
The grain in the wood does look like it should pop.
Be awhile before reduction and build up coats. Repeat.
15 to 20 thin coats eventually when done.
Bout every 3 to 4 coats Light Buff out with 4 ot steel wool Hit with a tack cloth Rinse with mineral spirits Light sand with 600 and 800 dry Rinse with mineral spirits with a soft tooth brush scrub
3 to 4 applicatims of cut tru oil again with 3 to 4 hr "drying" Between
2 to 3 day drying after Repeat. Also alot of taping and covering of checkering at stages in the process. The mineral spirits baths also aid in any tape residue removal. Which can be a PITA if you dont pay attention to it well especially in the border outline.
When done. Let "cure"2 to 3 weeks inside and outside. Finish still hardens up over 3 4 5 months
Its a build up process. Eventually it will hit a point where the final 2 wiping coats Can be put on after the last reduction has been done I like a grain look. Those last couple of wiping coats will not be rubbed off to a "dry" Most of the wiping coats I put on are wiped till I feel the drag Im comfortable knowing. Its a feel thing Too heavy the coat really does nothing cause ya took to much away. Too light and you leave too much on and gravity causes it to sag , run or glacier on it when you set it to dry.
Everybody has different ways. Some worry about steel wool issues embedded in the finish. I do the mineral spirit rinses and 600 and 800 sanding to address that.
It's important to use a good tape to cover checkering. And put it in a container between each use to keep any dust from settling on its edges. Wiping cloth pick it up off the tape and migrate it into your coats. PITA correcting that by doing another total reduction proces espeically on last finishing coats when ya notice it.
With that brown painted cinder block wall, it looks like your doing this in some old barracks!
Man cave. Paid my middle daughter and her boyfriend when they was in college yrs ago. 12.50 an hour apeice ta paint the wall. 5 hours. Also paid em ta scrape up the old tile off the concrete floor. 4 hrs on that one.
Think I mixed what I had on hand and came with 2 or 3 gallons of that " color".
Cut the skin layer outta the checkering Let both peices dry another day. Do 1st reduction sanding down of finish. Hit areas of light grain highlights a little more than others on both peices. Leave checkering like it is. Give both a mineral spirits bath. Tape up checkering Let dry another day. Start wiping cloth applications thursday. Remove tape from checkering about 2 hrs after that. Try to advoid seepage and migration under tape. Hit checkering outline with fine brush after drying for 2 days.
Repeat process as needed with lighter sanding progressively for final coat progression. Probably take wiping coat stage,s of 2 to 3 each session. Should be around 9 to 11 total from those stage,s and be done on the final 2 Then allow to dry and harden/shrinkage for about 2 weeks at least, indoors and outdoors for VO2 drying of chems.... Finish still takes 2 or 3 months to really harden up and cure , but the gun will be able to be used as normal. This is the intial 7 penetration coats and 3 additional coats for surface skin coats to intially work with in the 1st most important sanding stage.
Mocked it up. Still the intial pentrating coats. Light outside is crappy. Buttstock has alot highlights not in the pic Sand em down tommorow. That will also help out with a little more attention to light grain in the buttstock Gotta do something other than watch riot schitt..
Aint found a pistol grip that blends in my eye with the contouring. Just finish it like this for the time being. Easy to fit one when I find one eventually. I will know the right one when I see it. Maybe some fugging gun shows might open back up. Fugging chinese Fugging up everyfugging...

Still a mossberg 930. It runs It kills
At least all the machine cut sharp angles are gone from this before pic.
My best attempt at polishing my "Turd". Which is not done by far...
I am also a Mossberg fan; don’t consider em turds at all. The one I have is a 500 that’s been running flawlessly since I bought it with paper route money in 8th grade.
835 turkey gun and this 930 right now. They both kill.
Once outshot 3 other guys with a 835 turkey gun on a dove feild 7 or 8 yrs ago. Rifle sights and .670 rhino choke, limbsaver pad and weight in the stock. Same components I got on the 835 turkeyI got now.
Lol!!
One guy was really bent outta shape about it. He had a Browning Auto 5 Humpback His grampy,s gun Bragging it up. Useless peice of wood and steel in his hands. Specially with his dullard reflexes getting on birds. And he knew it.... LOL!!!
Gotta get jiggy with it in an hour or 2. 1st reduction sanding Seletive grain enhancing per sanding. Mostly the buttstock, forearm just around birdseyes spots to enhance.
Cleaning w mineral spirits Drying 2 wiping coat applications 7 or 8 hrs later Dry couple days
Reduction done Mineral spirits cleaned. Needs checkering taped up Hangers need ta be rigged up
Start fininshing coats 2 to 3 applied then let dry 2 or 3 days. Reductions will be way easier and less intensive between these Probably about 5 to 6 coats totsl Probably be 2 more very light sandings at 800 grit. Strive for 1 or 2 final coats to complete Its a build up , sand down process. My eyes will know when it done.
Selective grain highlight on butt stock look dramatic. Truoil will blend and darken it all once again. But the grain highlighted will contrast more than if I had left it alone.
1st 2 " finish" coats. Taped up outside borders of checkering. Hit em with a toothbrush ( firm) slurry of water and mothers mag and aluminum polish ( what I had on hand) to give the checkering a satin look. Cleaned up with mineral spirits. Need ta run ta wally world get a soft tooth brush and repeat process on checkering. Clean again
Tape up checkering completely Sand finish down with 600 and 800. Remove tape Clean with mineral spirits Retape checkering 2 more finish coats See what it looks like when dry. Might be done after that. Might need repeat and 1 or 2 more finish coats.
Light in pic makes it look like schitt.........
Its a progressive process , the eye will know when its done. Might be excessive to some doing the entire drawn out process. But the OCD way I do it is on me. LOL!!!
Trimmed down one of the wifes make up brushes. Dont feel like running to wally world. This should get down lower into the valleys of the checkering better and have more bristles in contact.
Yep!!! Making a " turd" shine!!! LOL!!! The 930 is a horrible shotgun. No one uses em for anything...
We need ta get out and do some 5 stand in july and august. Fugg it man, bring out your wheeler to the field if ya can swing it with the bionic knee by then. Or either the field on 21. 21 probably be a better option after last years fiasco on the twra field, aint nothing gonna change no matter the 3 simple things I told em they could do safety and range fan wise to enact.
They wont do a thing.. Would be interesting to go to also. Just ta see the zippy,s face,s again. Dale is a weasel. Dont even remember the other dipschit wardens name.
When ya overlook a standard it becomes the standard.
Twra can do that with a federal migratory bird............. Might be a chance to send a observation email to U.S. fish and wildlife types..... I always make friends wherever I go.
Might have ta hit the checkering one more time. Little bit more shined down on this round. Tape up checkering again. Do a 600 800 sanding on finish tommorow Go thru cleaning process, tape up checkering again and apply 2 wiping finish coats.
See what it looks like after able to handle dry time. 2 to 3 days drying time. Repeat finish coat process if needed, which it probably will be. Right now it is around 14 or 15 coats total to include penetration and intial build up coats.
20 21ish probably gonna be the most I'm gonna go . Start hitting a point of diminishing returns bringing out grain features eventually. Now in the process it is still gaining grain highlights. Kinda a add 3 back 2 process doing the entire deal after penetration coats are applied and dried.
800 sanding done, need to tape up checkering and get 2 wiping finish coats on it. This will be 16 or 17 coats See if process needs ta repeat. Probably have to...
On track for a 15 ish june complete then 2 week drying time inside and outside in heat.
It will hit a diminishing return point grain enhancement wise. The eye will know. It's still on the gain side at least for 2 more cycles. # 21 or 22 finish coat will be around the mark.
2 wiping coats. Flash makes it look horrible and gaudy as fugg.
Can already tell its gonna need ta dry 2 or 3 days. Do process again for coats 18-19ish. Carefully pull this tape in about 4 hrs when I can handle them lightly.
2 days drying time. Give it 1 more day before repeating process for application of coats 18 19 ish Scrub checkering outline with toothbrush and mineral spirits. Got some faint tape residue that the camera picked up. Pic in overcast sky.
Its getting close. Might actually be done and just need a mineral spirits soaked paper bag rub down in 2 or 3 days Give the checkering a mineral spirits tooth brushing also
Got 3 light wiping coats on it So its around 20 or 21 ish coats applied and the sanding reductions The 3 steps forward , 2 steps back process.
Last one was about 20 mins ago after the 1st 2 were put on an hour prior. Take the tape off in about 3 or 4 hours Flash makes it look like crap in the pic.
I got a red baron in the freezer. Gonna do it up right. Extra pepperoni Thin cut slices of extra sharp cheddar Chop up a few peices of sandwich ham. Couple grind passes of sea salt Couple grind passes of pepper.
Bake 14 mins at 400 2 mins on broil to get the pepperoni crunchy on outside edges of it.
Tamp a paper towel on it when done to get the grease off the top
Calling it done..... 20 21 ish coats Let dry for a couple days. Then clean up the checkering for any tape residue with a toothbrush and mineral spirits And a good rub down over all with a mineral spirit soaked paper bag for minuscule nibs and imperfections. Then indoor outdoor drying/ hardening to VO2/truoil shrinkage and harden up more.. And a wool cloth rub down and assembly in 7 to 14 days. Then let shotgun sit in a corner up right for a couple weeks or so and into a case. Finish needs to harden up for 2 or 3 months total for full durabilty. But the gun can be used during that entire time. Just gotta be aware finish is still " soft". Just a dove/ squirrel gun. Not like its is gonna be abused anyways...
Indoor pic with glare
Outdoor pic with glare in the shade. One of the things I like about Black walnut. Always changes appearance,s in different light and angles. Always something to see different in it.
