I've lived and worked from coast to coast and I know first hand that rural California is as conservative and pioneer type values as anywhere in the US.
My older son 4 years ago for his senior project built and displayed at this same high school a fully functional AR 15.

Yes he is a great kid, and we are having an outside graduation. He put on a lot of miles last year for that buck, ended up with a nice black tail and a rag horn bull also. Completely demolished a pair of kennetrek mountain hunters in the process. He's headed to the high country setting trail cameras and fishing today on at least a 10 mile hike.

My brother in law (RIP, Rick) grew up in that area and shot a lot of big bucks over the years up around Mt. Shasta.
