Every now and then I see a 742 or a 7400 that is priced pretty cheap. I’ve read on 24 where gunsmiths can modify the to pump rifles. I delislije semi-autos because I hate chasing brass. I was wondering how much would it cost to modify a 7400 to pump?

A 760 pump throws empties as far as a 742, you just control when it throws them. Just plug the gas port on the 742 and then you'll have a straight pull bolt action.

If you do all of the work yourself it would be fine. But to pay someone else for the conversion would be pricey. Give me a Remington 760/7600 any day.

Ahlman's in Morristown, MN, used to advertise that they converted 740/742 series rifles with damaged guide rails into 760 pump guns. I don't know what they charged or even if they still do it, but the answer is only a phone call away.

Ancient thread on this but it seems like a lot of hassle especially if your semi auto still works. Unless you like to do gunsmithing projects I'd sell the semi and buy a pump if that is what you want .

There was a 7400 in a 280 reasonably priced on the internet. I have had no problems with Remington’s semi-autos as some evidently have. But every semi-auto I’ve had, eventually went down the road, including Ruger’s original 44 nag, A later version of Ruger’s 44 Mag, Winchester’s 100, and different Remington’s (742, 74 & 7400)
The only exception with the traveling semi-autos is the Garlands, of which I’m quite fond.
Reading the links I can see a problem, that is getting Remington parts - I forgot about this critical issue and I agree this conversion isn’t as practical as it might of been.

Yes they did - but I'm not sure they do that any longer.. But, at the time, I believe the cost to convert was $175....

I'd be interested to hear if they still do that, and what the cost would be..

Converting a POS gun you own, that's worthless as is,
is much different than buying one to convert.

I can't imagine ever getting good math on a purchase and conversion.

The conversion was still listed on Ahlman's price sheets when I was down there in October. I think it was in the $350-$400 range as it was twice the $190 I paid for a conversion many years ago.

I had Ahlmans take a nice, but unreliable 742 308 Carbine, and turn it into a reliable pump gun. This was about 5 years ago, and I think it cost about $200.00.
I was going to sell the rifle, but it had been in the family since new, and wanted to extend its use. Under the same circumstances, I'd do it again. If I can get it back from my brother, I'll post some pictures. At a glance it's hard to tell it from a 760/7600.

Edit. I was wrong on the cost, it was closer to $350.00. They had the rifle about a month.
