When I talked to kimber awhile back about the finish on my model 84 fench walnut they told me to put a coat of tru-oil on the stock once or twice a year. My question is this: Am I doing any harm by putting many(6-10) additional coats on it this summer preping it for it's first season? Can I put too much on and/or does the stock get to a point were more finish isn't of any more help/protection?
Done properly it will be no problem... Properly means applied, allowed to sit for 10-15 minutes and then rubbed DRY with a clean cloth.

It does almost nothing top attempt to protect wood with oil finishes...

What worked best with mine was to lightly sand in a coat using 1000grit wet/dry sandpaper. I used tung oil finish on mine. Let it "mud up" a bit and then dry for at least a week. When sanding in the next coat go very lightly just enough to clear up the mud and wipe it dry. The sanding mud fills what little pores there are on the French Walnutand leaves them very smooth. Remember to sand to the edge of the checkering but not over it!
I used a little steaming and this method to remove scratches from both my FW Kimbers.

On a finish that's not as smooth you might want to sand the first coat with 600 then move to 1000........................DJ
DJ- feel free to show pictures of those 2 kimbers any time! Thanks for the input guys

Beautiful rifles, beautiful wood!
djpaintless,

How do you steam out the little marks...I have a kimber 8400 that has a couple little marks I would like to get out.

Sorry to hijack the thread here a bit.

I get a wet washrag and lay it on the spot and then put a hot iron over it for a couple seconds. That lifts most of it and then do the 1000grit sanding in finish. I got the second one of the pair because a buddy of mine was mad that it came from Kimber with a couple scratches. They are gone now.........and I made up the favor too him on another deal..................DJ
