Anyone besides myself run into issues with a shneider barrel order?
Sending it back for the second time tomorrow. Very basic oversites on Gary's part(like length & diameter).
Now,(because of all these setbacks~5mo+2more)I'll be lucky to even finish the rifle project, as my gunsmiths must be questoning MY integrity by now.
Just curious if I'm alone on this one?
What would you do? Order a Hart?

I think barrel makers must run on their own warped time system but the good think is Schneider does make a good barrel....as do others. If I ever decide to re--barrel another rifle I am going to pick the barrel maker by whoever has what I want in stock....or else get one that close and have my 'smith turn it to the correct countour.

Don't get me started on custom 'smiths and how they keep time.

I do what DB does. If Charlie has what I need in stock, then I'm not picky about brands, as I know he only uses top-notch stuff.

I have thus ended up with two Shilens, one Krieger, and one Lilja, plus a Mike Rock I got from our own carbonman. I have no complaints about any of them.

That having been said, from now on I'm going with Krieger whenever possible. They impress me the most, and not just from my own rifles, but those of the local range-sluts as well.

I just talked to Kreiger Barrels and they won't make me a #2 or #3 contour. The smallest they will do is a #5 contour in stainless, "Due to safety concersn". What the heck is up with them? I have run into this a couple of times with them.

On a second note, I have only had one gun smith ever come remotely close to their delivery date. Some have no concept of "months". The one exception was a smith that built my 6.5-06. He had it done from conception to shooting in 3 days...that includes inletting the stock and blue printing the action. He ordered the barrel from Douglass, who two day shipped it. I gave him the plans Monday night and he had it finished Friday morning. Needless to say, I was impressed <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Flinch

Flinch, it has something to do with there stainless stock potentially fracturing in cold weather. It would seem that they would find another source of stock or adjust purchase order specifications.

I heard its the owner of Kreiger who has these misconceptions about stainless barrels splitting and some of the employees don't agree with it but...........

My last Pac-Nor barrel took around 8 days from phone order to my doorstep. This was in late July I believe.

I too have had concerns about Kreiger and their contours. No one can supply any data , not even Kreiger, to support this claim............I was told by a man who is probably the most experienced and educated in this business that this is an old wife's tale.........if someone has some data, please share it with me....outside that , I love their barrels......except when our gracious webmaster Rick starts complaining about not taking enough time to do load developement... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

My 2 cents.

I think it is a mystical rumour,with a certain panache. Nuttin' more,nuttin' less and when painted in a corner they gotta run with it.

I liken it to barrel break-in mandates. Smoke and mirrors and little more.

Am bracing myself for crucifiction................(grin)

They just ain't no fun when they shoot right outta the box, Charlie. Especially factory ammo. Blech!



How's a guy supposed to justify handloading for a dang rifle when it shoots factory loads to half an inch and 100 fps over book to boot.



Howsabout factory 120-grain Partitions at 3400-plus over two different chronys, all into a nickel.



I couldn't stand it anymore and just shot all those bullets up. And good riddance!

I used to double the quoted delivery time to lessen anxiety. After I while I learned the gunsmith was speaking in dog years. Take the quoted time and multiply by 7. When using this equation everything gets back ahead of schedule. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I'm repeating from memory here, but there was an article by a metallurgist in Precision Shooting a year or so back which addressed the "thin" stainless barrel issue. While I don't recall all the reasons why, the main point was that stainless steel becomes MUCH more brittle at lower temps than chromemoly. Krieger is probably erring on the side of caution, but it is definitely not an "old wive's tale". Whether it has ever happened or not is another question, not many of us normal people shoot a 50 below.
