Now the problem. A close friend has a Rem 760 with a bad bore. There is a strong semtimental attachment and he wants to keep hunting with the firearm. I got it cleaned up but it will foul within 5-10 shots and go from 1.5 inches or so to about 10 inches. It took a weeks of Montana Extreme and Butches BS soaks and a lot of brushign and patching.

He is getting ready to retire and I thought it would be nifty gift to get his favorite deer rifle back in shape.

I have been looking for a good used or new old stock barrel to replace the bad one. I am finding virtually no one has any barrels. Remington never did make any barrels forthe aftermarket.

I am looking for some thoughts and recommendations out there.

You might consider having the rifle rebored................that is if the owner is not all the partial to a 30.06.

I would think any competent gunsmith could handle a rebarrel!

760/7600 rebarreling is touchy... It is not a simple thing to set it back a thread to ensure headspace is correct... It must be measured and done precisely the first time.

An old guy in Oregon was the go-to guy for years, but he dies quite a long time ago and I have not heard of anyone else that specializes in them...

I have a 7600 which is now a 35AI done by West (the deceased guy in OR) and it has a little excess headspace, which is no big deal for a reloader...

Send it back to Remington Custom Shop and let them rebarrel it.

This is good advice me thinks.

If the original barrel was faulty they might even rebarrel it free!

If it was Marlin, I'd bet on it!

You might check with Ahlman's in Morristown, MN, as they do a lot of Remington 760 work, including converting 742s with bad guide rails in the receiver into a pump action virtual 760.

I have also seen 760 barrels for sale on GUNBROKER.

Or, as noted previously, you could have the barrel rebored to 8mm-06, 338-06, or 35 Whelen.

I spoke to the custom shop. They will not work on production guns or do repairs. The 760 barrsl is not like the normal threaded - to-the - receiver set up.

The bolt on a 760 locks into the barrel itself and the barrel is attached to the receiver via the "barrel extension". Call Ahlman's. If it can be fixed, and almost everything can be fixed, they'll be honest with you.

The bolt locks into the barrel extension which is threaded on to the barrel itself. They are a little different to rebarrel but not all that difficult. GD

The gun should go back to Remington. It will come back with a new barrel properly attached and headspaced and will cost about $225

I just did this with a .243.

I have to admit, that is a good price and if one wants to stay with the original caliber, it is probably the way to go. From an accuracy standpoint, a 760 will probably work as well with a factory barrel as with the best custom.

I had to talk to three gunsmiths and departments at Remington before someone determined they CAN rebarrel the 760. It goes to the Illion. New York facility. The 800 customer service is answered in North Carolina. It will be sent after deer season. I had quotes from "we cant do it because no barrels are available" to $800. I imagine the interrupted thread in the barrel that accepts the bolt is a little out of the ordinary.
