How do you take the forend off a Remington 760? There is no screw on the front of the forend like an 870. Anyone know?

Not knowing the vintage of your 760 , I can't answer your question . What I can tell you is that you don't want to attach your sling to the forearm of any Rem. pump . The reason is that a forearm mount wears on the action . I ahve several 760s and 7600s and the foreward swivel mount is a barrel band on every one of them . Put it about two inches ahead of the forearm and you're good to go !

If it is a 760 Remington, the forend attach screw must be missing; I've never seen on that didn't have one.

And besides, Uncle Mikes makes a dandy sling swiven that replaces that swrew and it is a dandy, don't need a barrel band type either.

I dont know the exact year it was made but Im sure it was made in the first few years of production. I will attach a pic so you guys can see what im dealing with here.

There is a nut on the action bar. You need to remove the tube that goes through the fore end and action bar first. Then you have access to the nut that is inside the front of the fore end. familiar with and 870?? Has the same type of nut. I use a special 760 fore end tool, but I'm sure one can be made.

FYI: I used a round shank screw driver that fit the hole well to take mine apart. We had to make a tool and it works as well. I will try to find the tool and take a photo of it for you.

I stand corrected; that is a vey early one. I think BT99 is correct, soory.

I think burgie has it. I cant find the nut that BT99 is talking about but there are the holes for an allen wrench as shown in the pics that burgie sent.

The early 760's such as the one in the photos, had a very strong arrangement where the front of the slide tube was secured to a barrel lug. Drilling and tapping the knob at the end for a swivel stud made for a very secure attachment which did not put undue pressure on the tube. The later arrangement, which had an unsupported tube end was a very poor place to put a swivel (regardless of what Uncle Mikes said), since pressure on this tube could, and did,cause problems.

Keyshunter , if you ever take an early 760 apart you will see that what you are referring to as a barrel lug is in fact not attached to the barrel at all . In fact what that piece is , is a Brush Guard that they first started using on the Model 14 , 141 . The earliest ones were steel and sometime around 1965 they switched to plastic ! And Jkob , your statment that all 760 forends are attached with a screw , proves that you don't know much about them . Remington didn't shorten the action tube and attach the forend with a screw until 1968 !
The 760 went into production in 1952 !
