Guys,
Is it possible, and feasible to change a 35 Rem. into 358 Win.? I guess i'm asking is the 760 strong enough, and would the amount of work and cost be to much? Just seems like it would be an awsome short to medium range thumper. I've already got a Rem. 700 Classic in 350 Rem. mag. and thought a 358 carbine would be handy.

35 Rem. 760s are desirable. Shame to sacrifice one, but your rifle. Re-boring a 243/308 may be just as easy.

should be plenty strong enough . I have one that started life as a 35 rem that is a 35 whelen now, don't know who or when the conversion was done though but i've been shooting it for years

My pet 760 is a .358 that started life as a .35 Rem. . The .35 Rem. clip wont work with the .358 though ! I use .308 clips with the front of the lips opened up a tad . Make sure to hire a smith that has done this job before , the chambering has to be done carefully . Setting the barrel back on a 760 is a major pain ! The guy that did mine , does a bunch of them , and knows what he's doing ! You might want to shorten the barrel to 20" while it's off too , makes them real handy .

on a regular basis.

I had one that started as a 35 Rem and was converted to Whelen.
Bolt travel had to be lengthened. Mag change and some clearance
added at front of bolt cover. To allow loaded 250 gr rounds to eject.

Easier to rebore and rechamber a 06 length ( if chambered
right by some one who knows how) lots of large chambers that were done wrong.

I don't have a 35Rem. 760 to sacrifice yet, am just looking for advice as to the best way to go. Maybe to rebore is the way to go. Would already have correct bolt face. About what would that cost? More input and advice surely welcome.

The bolt face on the 35 Rem. works just fine with the .358 Win. , I've been using mine for 10 years without any issues . Why spend $ 300.00 + , to get the same thing you can get for $50.00 , with a simple rechamber ? You can buy a bunch of clips and reloading components with the money saved , and still have some left over ! Oh and the bolt travel is the same on every pump , there's no way or need to make it longer . I found 20" to be a good length for the barrels , short enough to manuver in heavy cover without giving up too much velocity . Cuts down on muzzleblast a little too ! If you don't mind shipping it to Vermont , we'll fix ya right up .

Yes it is very doable but you are throwing resale value right out the window.

I was addressing paying a premium for a collector rifle and having it re-chambered, VS purchasing a less expensive donor and looking into a re-bore. Since the OP hasn't purchased a donor yet, I think looking at multiple options can be a good thing. I realize i'd be throwing resale out the window in some places and to some people, but around here i can buy nice 760s-7600 for $250, most with some kind of scope. I think a 760-7600 in 358win. with a 18 or 20in. barrel would be worth every bit as much as a standard 308 etc., although i've been wrong before. Anyway i wouldn't build it to sell, i want to use it. Haven't started looking for a donor yet wanted some opinions first. Sounds pretty doable guess i'll have to start looking. Thanks for the info.

I wouldn't butcher a true collector. The Whelen IS another good option and pretty tempting.

I would recommend an early 7600 for your build , Pre 1990 . That's when they started putting the raised comb stock on them , which you can't use Iron sights with . They are easier to rebarrel than the 760s ! I build a few every year , and keep my eyes open for .35 Cal. and .338 Cal. takeoff barrels . They are scarse as hens teeth , but find one now and then . Have a .338 Fed on hand now , looking for a donor gun for it . Can you really buy pumps for $250.00 where you live , I'd like to pick one up for that price !

I'm not saying there are boatloads of them at those prices but last summer i passed on a nice 30-06 with some kinda scope on it. (not a Leopold or Monark) for $250. It's pretty common to get a chance to buy 1-2 a year at those prices. Was talking to my stepson tonight and told him if he heard of one cheap to grab it or let me know. He said there was one at the local sportshop (760 35Rem.) a few days ago. He said he thought it was pretty nice, maybe even refinished nice but he couldn't remember the price, he's going to check for me. He lives 170 miles from me but i have to be within 5-10 miles of there Fri. on some family busines. If it's still there i'll take some trade bait and extra cash. Time will tell.

That is what I thought on my older 760 in 35 Remington that I had rechambered to 35 Whelen. Till I tried to get it to function would not open far enough for a loaded 250 gr load. Removed material from back of bolt, and front of mag cover. As I recall. Might not be any issue with a 358 Win rechamber.

Those 250s were a tad long were they ? I have never rechambered a .35 Rem 760 to the Whelen . Next time I have one apart I'm going to check that out , don't know what kind of a job that would be . I'd probably just change bullets , instead of modifying the gun .

My brother bought a Mauser 30-06 from him that had been rebored to 35 Whelen, and it shoots VERY well.
