I was getting ready to ship my 92 in 454 off to McGowan to get a new octagon barrel. The sights were canted so I figured I would just get a heavier barrel installed to tame the recoil a bit, not to mention it would look great. Pulled the forearm off and noticed the flat milled on the bottom of the barrel for magazine tube clearance had moved. Grabbed the barrel and turned, and off it came. This rifle has a bad habit of shooting screws loose, but the barrel!? What should I do? Go ahead and pack it up and get the barrel work done? Could there be something wrong with the action? I really want to build it up to something nice and useable for huntin. I am at a loss as to how to proceed, get the work done or throw it in the scrap heap?

.

I would call McGowan and ask him if he thought the .454 might have stretched the receiver in the area of the bbl threading enough to cause the loose bbl, and see what he think you should do.

I would be very hesitant to send it off to Rossi/Taurus, since although they might effect a repair/replacement, you might be w/o a rifle for a year.

.
Sounds like solid advice, thanks. The warranty is gone anyway, they only warranty for one year.

a loose barrel should be cause for alarm - by Rossi due to liability. you might like to call them... Mel
How is the thread fit? Does the barrel index right when tight?

44/40's converted to 44 Mag have resulted in expanded (juged chambers). There isn't a lot of metal around the chamber.
30/30's use the same size breech but they have more metal.
When I screw th barrel back on hand tight the sights are canted to the right slightly. There is no wiggle though. The barrel and action threads look OK, to me anyway.

If it is canted to the right it will tighten up straight.
Be sure to brace the magazine port if you put a wrench on
the action.
